Night of the Ghouls (1959) Clip
Ed Wood rounds up the usual suspects for this craptastic shocker. Lt. Moore is hot on the trail of shyster medium Dr. Acula (Uh huh, DraculaÂ… I get it) who sets up his show in the good old Dr. Vornoff's (Bela Lugosi's lair in 'Bride of the Gorilla' (1955)) old lair to bilk little old ladies hard earned social security by channeling their love ones with floating sheets and phantom trumpet players who couldn't hold a tune even if they had pockets. This guy couldn't talk to the dead with a two cans connected by string. This movie is badly acted with horrible dialogue and some of the cheesiest effects in all his films. I had a great time with this one.

Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959) Clip
While it thoroughly deserves its reputation as a film only worth seeing so that you can enjoy its remarkably amateurish production, on the other hand it seems a bit unfair to label it as the worst film ever made. Most of it is quite watchable, it's not at all offensive, and the story - utterly ridiculous as it is - moves fairly quickly, and gives you some reasons to stick around to the end.

Invasion USA (1952) Clip
In a New York City bar, the brooding, mysterious forecaster Mr. Ohman (Dan O'Herlihy) is sitting and drinking from a very large brandy glass. He gets into discussions with a cross-section of affluent Americans at the bar, including local television newscaster Vince Potter (Gerald Mohr), beautiful young New York society woman Carla Sanford (Peggie Castle), a California industrialist, a rancher from Arizona, and a Congressman. International news is bad, but these Americans do not want to hear it. While they all dislike Communism and appreciate the material wealth they enjoy, they also want lower taxes and don't see the need for industrial support of government. As he swishes the brandy around his snifter, Ohman tells the others that many Americans want safety and security, but do not want to make any sacrifices for it.

Freedom and You (1962) aka Red Nightmare Clip
This film, Freedom and You was also known as Red Nightmare. Jerry Donavon (Jack Kelly) takes his freedom for granted. So, Jack Webb shows up and casts a magic spell, which causes Jerry to have a dream about what it would be like to live in a communist society. In fact, you could even say that Jack Webb gives Jerry a red nightmare!
So, there’s two ways to review this film. We can either debate the film’s politics and get into a big discussion about economics and policy. Or, we can simply enjoy it for what it is, a histrionic but sincere time capsule of what was going on in the psyche of 1962 America. Though made for the Department of Defense, it was shown on American television on Jack Webb's GE True in 1962 and as an educational film to American schools under the Red Nightmare title.

Song of the South (1946) Clip
Song of the South was ahead of the times when Disney released it in 1946; an Oscar was even awarded to James Baskett. Baskett was the first black person to receive the honor. The film has some subtle racism, but nothing like the racism in films like Gone with the Wind or even Blazing Saddles. Song of the South was a product of the time, and sterotyping was frequent and prevalent, especially in animation.

War of the Wildcats aka In Old Oklahoma (1943) Clip
This film was originally released in 1943 as In Old Oklahoma and then reissued as War of the Wildcats in 1947. It is action adventure in the oil fields and it's very entertaining and fun. Wayne is Cowboy Dan Somers and he competes with oilman Jim Gardner (Albert Dekker) for oil lease rights on Indian land in Oklahoma, as well as for the attentions of schoolteacher turned scandalous book author Cathy Allen (Marsha Hunt). It has a good supporting cast including George "Gabby" Hayes. You will never see the Duke quite like this in any other role. If you're a fan of the Duke, you will love this film. Also Catch the pre-Roy Rogers Dale Evans bringing down the house with a charming stage number.

The story of a doomed bomber pilot who is missed by his heavenly conductor in the English fog during the second world war, and his subsequent brushes with the celestial authorities (or is it in his head) is played with panache by David Niven and Kim Hunter and is incredibly touching - especially in the opening scenes when the doomed pilot (Niven) describes his plight to the ground radio operator (Hunter).

The Falcon in Hollywood (1944) Clip
Entertaining entry in RKO's series has The Falcon (Tom Conway) on vacation in Hollywood when a famous actor is murdered. The finger points to various people in the production so The Falcon must sort it all out. This is perhaps the best that I've seen from the series due in large part to a very good supporting cast and a nice little mystery that remains interesting throughout the film. Most of the action takes place on the backlot of a studio so we get all sorts of nice scenes, which work themselves well into the mystery. A lot of Hollywood props are used as gags or evidence and this too adds to the fun.
But chiefly, this film is remarkable for the pairing of Tom Conway with a female sidekick, a cabbie named Billie, played to superb comic effect by Veda Ann Borg. The two have a wonderful magic together. RKO studios doubled for the fictional Sunset Studio in The Falcon in Hollywood. Also co-starring Sheldon Leonard and Barbara Hale (Della Street on TV Perry Mason).

Two O'Clock Courage (1945) Clip
The film begins with Tom Conway, in an excellent performance, looking at a sign noting an intersection of two streets. He doesn't know where there are, where he is. Or, even, who he is. Amnesia, yes indeed.
Now the comedy: Ann Rutherford, a female cab driver, happens by and helps him out. She calls her taxi Harry and, later, people get confused and think Harry might be the name of a suspect. Though this has its light moments, it is a dark little movie. (And little it is, at just a bit longer than an hour.) We have a comic newspaperman and a semi-comic police officer. But we have some genuine bad guys too, and some women who are right out of the noir canon as well.
Among these is Jane Greer in a very early appearance (billed here as Bettejane Greer). Though her role is small, she grabs out attention. The camera loves her, almost in the way it was to love a very different sort of performer: Marilyn Monroe. Though Greer doesn't have a lot to do or a whole lot of screen time, when she's around, we can't take our eyes off her. Now, there was real (and sadly underused) star!

Nothing Sacred (1937) Clip
One of the reasons the film is considered among the most celebrated screwball comedies of all time is that underneath the humor it incorporates sharply cynical themes of corruption and dishonesty. This film, along with Ben Hecht's The Front Page (1931) and its 1940 remake His Girl Friday with Cary Grant, caricatures the chicanery to which some newspapers resorted in order to get a "hot" story. This knee-slapping comedy is directed by William A. Wellman and its a crime not to watch.
The first screwball comedy filmed in color, Nothing Sacred also represents the first use in a color film of process effects, montage and rear screen projection. Backgrounds for the rear projection were filmed on the streets of New York. Paramount Pictures and other studios refined this technique in their subsequent color features

Max Thursday (Zachary Scott) is an alcoholic former cop living in a rundown hotel owned by his friend Smitty. He gets a visit from his ex-wife Georgia. Her brother Fred Mace and their son Jeff are missing. Apparently, Jeff has been kidnapped and Fred is somehow involved.
In this harsh pulpy noir Zachary Scott is acting with all his chops. It has the brutality and hard-talk for the standard noir B-movie. I like many of the New York City exteriors. They're low rent and outside the normal glamor locations. It's a gritty film noir crime B-movie.

Dillinger (1945) Clip
This movie has several big things going for it: its short, fast-moving and just plain entertaining. How much more do you want? Also, Lawrence Tierney was made for gangster/film noir movies. He looks the part, acts the part, and was a thug in real life, too. Who better than to portray famous criminal John Dillinger as a cold-blooded killer?
This was Tierney's starring debut and it was a good vehicle for him. I also enjoyed Edmund Lowe as the gang boss prior to Tierney taking over. I enjoyed the supporting cast, too: Anne Jeffreys, Elisha Cook Jr., Eduardo Cianelli and Marc Lawrence. All of them add to this film.

Charming, little British musical much superior to those glossy MGM musicals of the same period. Although David Niven is top billed, this is Vera-Ellen's film all the way. DVD quality is good - crystal print, lush & brilliant color, and nice sets - check out that gorgeous stain glass door!! This is my favorite Vera Ellen film - she was never lovelier.
