2023 Town of Summerville Candidates Forum II
#summerville #southcarolina #mayoralrace #localpolitics #districtrace
This is the complete and unedited (excluding battery and memory card changes) second 2023 Town of Summerville Candidates Forum for Mayor and District 2, presented by the Dorchester County Republican Women's Club.
I've posted this video for those interested in the politics of Summerville, South Carolina, and who were unable to attend. The mayoral and district races are always interesting, as are small-town politics. This year's sure to be no exception.
Here are the questions in case you'd prefer not to watch the entire eighty-nine minutes:
00:00 - Intro.
00:36 - Prayer, Pledge of Allegiance, Creed.
02:44 - Steven Wright: Announcement.
04:00 - Outreach recipient: Katie Stagliano for Katie's Krops.
09:15 - Acknowledgements.
MAYORAL CANDIDATES
09:56 - Opening remarks (Introduction & why I'm running for mayor).
20:27 - What spending items can you commit to cutting, to ensure we don't have to raise taxes again?
26:27 - What will you propose to keep infrastructure on pace with growth?
32:23 - How will you address the homeless issue? How will you help these people?
38:00 - What will you do to improve the political climate and rhetoric in Summerville?
41:18 - Summerville's Mayor has limited power. What will you do to bring the other councilmen together for a common cause?
45:35 - Candidate's closing remarks.
DISTRICT 2 CANDIDATES
49:39 - Opening remarks (Introduction & why I'm running for District 2).

01:09:29 - How will you address the homeless issue? How will you help these people?
01:14:51 - What will you do to improve the political climate and rhetoric in Summerville?
01:19:10 - What does 'family values' mean to each of you?
01:23:49 - Candidate's closing remarks.
01:27:27 - Suggestion from audience member regarding a regular 'all town forum.'
01:28:26: Credits.
Thanks to DCRWC President Donna Klim for moderating, and the Dorchester County Republican Women's Club for putting the whole thing together, Coastal Coffee Roasters and Brad Mallett for hosting, and especially this year's candidates for participating in this democratic process: Russ Touchberry, Dickie Miler, Vickie Fagen, Bill McIntosh, Tiffany Johnson-WIlson, and Terry Jenkins. But also you for watching and participating. Regardless of your candidate, it's vitally important to get out there and vote! Just do it! No excuses!
And, please do me this favor: If you hear something you don't like by one of the candidates, please, please, please do NOT click the "thumbs down" button. I'm just the messenger. There's no need to leave my video a bad mark or review. That would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Flowertown: 2023 Azalea Bloom, Summerville, SC
#azalea #azaleas #spring #springtime #springbloom #summerville #southcarolina #smalltown #flowers #bloom
The locals call Summerville, South Carolina (where I live, if you haven’t figured that out by now) “Flowertown in the Pines.” Besides the overabundance of pine trees, the town sees nature’s bounty awash every spring in color, from hot pink azaleas to purple wisteria, to delicate white dogwoods. One cannot drive down a single road in town and not see these massive blooms in every direction. It truly is a sight to see. The town bases an entire three-day festival around this event called, aptly enough, the Flowertown Festival.
Mother Nature surprised us with an early bloom this year. Usually, this explosion of color occurs in the last weeks of March into April. Not this year, though. Unfortunately, these beauties will only remain for a few weeks and will likely be gone by the first weekend in April, the date of the festival. This completely negated my plans to do a film that would’ve combined the bloom with the festival. Oh, well. Terrible situation.
Instead, I present this ad hoc montage of the 2023 azalea bloom. Honestly, though, these images don’t do the actual thing justice. Not be a long shot. Enjoy the show!
Photos and footage were shot at Azalea Park, Hutchinson Square, and Summerville Town Hall on March 07, 2023, and March 08, 2023.

This is the complete 2022 Summerville Christmas Parade in Summerville, South Carolina (edited for gaps in the parade and slowdowns). No vendors were edited out. A few toward the end were missed during a hasty camera battery change.
The Summerville Christmas Parade is designed to promote positivity throughout the Town of Summerville while capturing the “spirit of the Christmas holiday.” The parade is a family-friendly, non-political event that aims to bring the community together to celebrate the season while representing the local traditions and Summerville hospitality.

Book Trailer: Prisoner of the Game

The 1992 case of Carter Frye and his psychosis that left seven people dead went mostly unnoticed by the media and the public. Told mainly by Frye himself, he takes us into his mind’s deepest, darkest, and most disturbing places. Places that will chill your spine cold and give you pause before turning out the light to go to sleep.
Frye believes everyone he meets should play ‘the game.’ Those who don’t or violate the rules of ‘the game’ must pay a penalty, usually with their life. Frye doesn’t realize he, too, is a prisoner of the game. What will happen if he breaks his own rules?

Book Trailer: Scarecrow
#scarecrow #murder #mystery #murdermystery #serialkiller #maryland #westminster #westernmarylandcollege #whodunnit
Ryan Thomas and his dormmate Jarrod Mayfield awaken on a cold morning in March to a gruesome discovery. One of Western Maryland College’s most respected professors, Austin Webb, has been brutally murdered and left for dead behind the football stadium bleachers. There is no apparent motive and no clear suspects. The killer left behind two clues. The symbol of a crow with its wings spread branded on the deceased professor’s forehead and a note printed on a blank business card that reads, “Ring me a Porter.”
As writers for the college’s newspaper, Ryan and Jarrod team up with fellow writer Tiffany Cutter and the newspaper’s editor, Alan Kittridge, to begin a journalistic investigation. Little do they know they’re about to be dragged into one of the most horrifying events the small town of Westminster, Maryland, has ever seen.
What Ryan and his friends discover will change their lives forever and turn the sleepy town upside down. Hiding in the shadows is a serial killer who wants revenge for something that happened decades earlier.
Will this team of college journalists stop the killer before he completes his cycle? Will law enforcement? Or will the killer complete his masterpiece?
Figure it out.

Searching For Closure
#woodbine #maryland #exploration #explore #closure #search #documentary #docudrama
Thirty years ago, I left home after an intense fight with my father.
He passed away last year.
My childhood home has fallen into an extreme state of disrepair. But beyond that, my sister and I left behind treasured memorabilia that my father refused to return.
He claimed he destroyed it all.
Still, the world’s deadliest question haunted many sleepless nights.
What if?
What if…he lied?
What if…there was a chance all those things left behind still exist?
What if…I finally had the opportunity to find out?
Thirty years later, I’ve returned to my childhood home in Woodbine, Maryland. Not only am I hunting for all the things we left behind, but I’m also seeking answers.
How did that happen? How did this once beautiful home end up on the verge of collapse?
This is my search for answers.
NOTES:
I didn’t intend this project to become a film. I didn’t go to the house in Woodbine to shoot footage for a documentary, and it shows. Had I, I’d have done it the right way, with proper lighting, better angles, b-roll footage, and scenes the reflect the actual story. Maybe even rent a drone and take aerial shots. The footage I shot was to show family and friends I grew up with what happened to the Woodbine house.
Days later, I watched my footage for the first time. I could see the lineups with old photos, mentally creating a then/now montage. That’s what began this crazy effort. The week after returning home, I began messing around with the then/now transitions. After that, I thought I’d try my hand at putting together a documentary of the trip and attempt to tell a story with it. Then came the music. What a painstaking effort that was, finding the right music for the scene’s mood. It took DAYS to audition most of the Epidemic Sounds library. I intended to write my own soundtrack, but that would have taken much longer. There’s only so much free time in a day. Work and all that.
I’d also never messed around with Adobe Premiere before. Not too steep a learning curve, thank the Universe.
Any-who, this is the result.
This film is a passion project that doesn’t follow strict filmmaker rules, clearly. But, so what? I did this for fun. I only hope my years of experience writing stories translate well to film. You’ll have to be the judge of that.
Be gentle, though. It’s my first time, after all.

A walk down memory lane. Highlights of our family's vacation to Walt Disney World in 1988. It's very retro, a glimpse into the past when Disney was great.
This film is roughly five hours and forty-five minutes. Unless one is a true fanatic, I don't expect anyone to sit for that long looking for the more exciting bits. Here is a chapter breakdown of the highlights.
00:00 - Intro/Arrival
05:06 - Meg's Birthday Surprise (Pueblo Room)
07:00 - Fantasy In The Sky (Magic Kingdom Fireworks)
13:01 - Main Street Electrical Light Parade
34:18 - Chip 'n Dale Breakfast Jamboree

NOTES
The source for this film originated from thirty-four-year-old VHS videotapes that are copies of the masters. There was lots of noise and grain. You're not seeing it, mostly, as it was *painstakingly* removed. The stills are from old photo albums and 35mm slides (see my other film, Searching For Closure). I tweaked the color on everything to give what you see a little more life from its dull source material.
You'll also forgive my bad Monty Python style emceeing found throughout. I was going through a phase. ;-)

The week after I returned home, I began messing around with the then/now transitions. After that, I thought I’d try my hand at putting together a documentary of the trip and attempt to tell a story with it. Then came the music. What a painstaking effort that was, finding the right music for the mood of the scene. It took DAYS to audition most of the Epidemic Sounds library. I intended to write my own soundtrack, but that would have taken much longer. There’s only so much free time in a day. Work and all that.
I’d also never messed around with Adobe Premiere before. Not too steep a leaning curve, thank the Universe.
