Tying The Reid's Assassin - Dressed Irons
Hook: Mustad 3906, 3906b or 3399, #10 - #16
Thread: Uni-Thread 8/0, Black
Tail: Danville 4-Strand Rayon Floss, Red
Rib: Danville Fine Silver Wire
Body: Uni-Floss, Black
Hackle: Starling or Hen, black
The Reid's Assassin is an old patter from the Clyde River in Scotland. It is similar to the Bradshaw's Fancy but I do not know which came first. I found it an interesting pattern because of the similarity plus it is a good example of creating a fly with substituted materials. Often, as tiers we do not have the hackle, the floss or the silk thread that they pattern calls for but we do have something else that will work. There is nothing wrong with substituting materials in order to create the pattern, get it in the water and have some fun. That's what it is all about. If you really enjoy tying, fishing and learning about Soft Hackle flies I highly recommend Sylvester Nemes' book mentioned in this video. - Enjoy

Tying Barr's Slump Buster - Dressed Irons
Hook: Mustad R74-9672, #4 - #12
Thread: Uni-Thread 8/0, Brown
Weight: Gold Cone, Large & .020 Lead Wire
Tail: Pine Squirrel Zonker, Natural
Body: Sparkle Braid, Gold
Rib: Gold Wire, Medium
Wing: Pine Squirrel Zonker, Natural
Collar: Pine Squirrel Zonker, Natural
The Slump Buster is a wonderful fly for stubborn trout and Smallmouth when waters are clear and fish don't seem active. With lots of weight it is great for throwing around rocks, logs and current seams where fish are holding. From a tying perspective it is a fun fly to tie and has a couple of interesting techniques that can be easily applied to other patterns. The Slump Buster can be swung like a baitfish or a leech as well as bounced along the bottoms as a Sculpin. - Enjoy

Thread: Uni-Thread 8/0, Brown
Tail: Pheasant Tail
Body: Pheasant Tail
Rib: Danville Copper Wire, Medium
Thorax: Peacock Herl
Hackle: Hungarian Partridge
The Soft Hackle Pheasant Tail has been around for a long time, and for good reason. It is a proven pattern and one that works under many different fishing conditions. If you look at it closely you will see it is a variant of the Pheasant Tail nymph but it is hard to tell which came first. Regardless, it is a fun fly to tie as well as fish. If you are a soft hackle enthusiast then this would server you well at your vise and in your fly box. - Enjoy

Tying The March Brown Spider - Dressed Irons
Hook: Mustad 3906, 3906b or 3399, #10 - #16
Thread: Pearsall's Silk, Orange
Body: Hare's Mask Dubbing
Rib: Danville Oval Gold Tinsel, #18
Hackle: Grouse Covert Hackle
The March Brown Spider is another old fly that has over the years produced all sorts of variations.
From wet flies, nymphs, streamers, soft hackles to dry flies there is a March Brown fly for any occasion. This variant is a 'spider' fly also referred to commonly as a soft hackle. Very simply pattern and quick to tie. If you are needing some flies in smaller sizes this pattern is a good was to tie as even at a size 18 it is not difficult to tie. If you don't have any Pearsall's silk then just use a Uni-Thread 8/0 in Orange or a Danville 6/0 in Orange. That will do fine. - Enjoy

Tail: Golden Pheasant Tippet
Body: Danville Mylar Tinsel, Gold, #14 or #16/18
Hackle: Schlappen, Black

The Silver & Black is a simple and elegant wet fly. It works very well in "off" colored water as the black will stand out more. It is a nice pattern to get your feet wet in the realm of wet flies. Very simple to tie and a great one to practice your skills on. Change up the color of the throat and the wing and I am certain you will have some great flies for many fishing conditions. - Enjoy

The Gray Hackle Yellow is a soft hackle fly that has been around for many many years. This version is a wonderful mix between soft hackle and wet fly with a modern touch. Along with the Partridge and Yellow it is a classic fly that is both fun to tie and fish. I go into the different versions of the fly and a little history in the video. I apologize for the capture of the two books I mention in the introduction being too blurry. My depth of field was two shallow so they are not in focus. I did include images of the books and there are links at the bottom of this description for anyone interested in getting copies of these books. The Black Midge is a wonderful fly for fishing streams when they are off color. Usually, in the early spring with a lot of rain and run off the streams are cloudy and somewhat muddy. That is the time to fish a black fly and the Black Midge is just that fly if you are wanting to cast soft hackle flies to trout. It is a simple pattern to tie, only two materials and in no time you can have a dozen of these tied and ready to fish. - Enjoy

Tying The Blanton's Whistler - Dressed Irons

Tail: Bucktail, White, Pearl Flash Accent, Holographic Silver Flashabou,
Grizzly Rooster Saddle Hackle
Body: Medium Chenille, Red

I first tied the Blanton's Whistler (a.k.a. The Flashtail Whistler) way back in 2009 when headed to Canada for some early season Northern Pike fishing. Not only did it catch the pike I found if I got the fly down about 8 to 10 feet I was picking up four and five pound Smallmouth! It has become a staple in my box whenever I am in "big fish" waters. It is a straightforward fly to tie and I am surprised there are not more videos on it. This is the basic version I was introduced to but if you do a search on the Internet you will find other material and color combinations that I think would fish well also. I mentioned in the video an article by Don Blanton (the originator of the pattern) and I have included the link below. - Enjoy

Tying The Partridge & Yellow

Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer Silk, Yellow or Wapsi UTC Ultra Thread 70 Denier Yellow
Body: Pearsall's Gossamer Silk, Yellow or Wapsi UTC Ultra Thread 70 Denier Yellow
Collar: Hungarian Partridge, Natural
Head: Pearsall's Gossamer Silk, Yellow or Wapsi UTC Ultra Thread 70 Denier Yellow
The Partridge & Yellow kicks off a series of soft hackle flies that I will be doing in the coming months. There are two reasons for this. First, I am focusing a lot of attention on older patterns, mostly flies before 1950 (when I can find that information). I fell in love with fly tying and fishing back when wet flies and freshwater streamers were still a thing, at least they seemed to me. For a long time I have wanted to focus on this older patterns and learn and refine my techniques for creating wet flies, soft hackles, bucktail streamers, and classic freshwater streamers.
The second reason is I will be attending a Tie-A-Thon in May that is being hosted by the St. Joseph River Valley Fly Fishers in Elkhart Indiana. The day of the event, I will be tying soft hackles and the idea is to tie as many as you can and then donate them. You can also donate flies separate from the event, in case you can not make it. So, I will be tying flies that day and donating a whole bunch that I have tied while making videos of each one. I had planned on starting on some wet flies this winter but this worked into my plans very well.
The Partridge & Yellow is a very basic soft hackle fly, just yellow thread and a Hungarian Partridge hackle. However, it is also one of the most effective soft hackle flies and it has been around for many many years (along with the Partridge & Orange and the Partridge & Green). I talk some in the video about the fly, resources to read up on it as well as about the Tie-A-Thon. There are links below to additional information as well. - Enjoy

Body: Guinea Fowl, dyed Olive
Collar: Rooster Saddle Hackle, White
Head/Weight: Medium Gold Cone, 15 wraps of .020 Lead Wire
I was introduced to the Moto Minnow a number of years ago as a Smallmouth streamer but I think it was originally created as a trout streamer. It is a straightforward easy fly to tie that has a nice broad profile in the water as well as nice contrasting colors to get the attention of the fish. This fly can be fished higher in the water column in faster water and slow and right on the bottom in slower water. This gives this fly many different areas it can be fished and allows it to represent many different food types. It can easily be tied in different colors for different waters and conditions! - Enjoy
