Tying The Emma - Dressed Irons
Hook: Mustad 3399, #4 - #12
Thread: Danville 6/0, White & Black
Tag: Danville Gold Mylar Tinsel, 16/18
Body: Danville 4-strand Rayon Floss, Dark Red, 2 strands
Rib: Danville Gold Mylar Tinsel, 16/18
Hackle: Schlappen, Light Claret
Wing: Jungle Cock Shoulder
The Emma is the last (for now) in my Bergman series of wet flies. I chose this because the wing is made with simple Jungle cock should (some refer to them as Jungle Cock body feathers). Now all wet flies have to have fancy matched and married wings. The rest of the fly is tied just like many traditional wet flies. The Emma is a quick fly to tie and fun.

The Cahill (sometimes referred to as the Dark Cahill) is a classic wet fly pattern created by Dan Cahill back in 1884. The pattern is so versatile that there are at least two versions I know if (a dark and a light Cahill) but the light Cahill is sometimes tied with a white body and hackle so, I don't know if that constitutes a third version (Ulta Light?). For many fly fisherman it is a staple in their fly box.
A gentleman by the name of Gerald E. Wolf has a nice article on the history of the Cahill. Follow this link to check it out.

The Gray Hackle Peacock is a very simple but classic wet fly. It is the perfect fly to tie if you are wanting to get started tying wet flies. It has many of the same pieces and parts as more elaborate wet flies but not as complicated.
I have a class coming up on wet flies and I chose the Gray Hackle Peacock after watching Don Bastian's DVD on Tying Classic Wet flies. I highly recommend Don Bastian's DVD's for anyone wanting to get started in wet flies. There are links to his DVDs below.

The Red & White Bucktail is a fun fly to tie as well as fish. There are a couple of interesting techniques to tying this fly otherwise the fly is a very straightforward bucktail streamer. The best part is the fly is good for both trout and Smallmouth Bass! The streamer bite is on in the Midwest and now is a great time to tie up some Red & White Bucktail Streamers! - Enjoy

I ran across the It's-A-Bug fly in Fly Tyer magazine back in 2001. It quickly became a favorite fly. The original is tied in sizes for panfish but I modified the fly and tied it a little bigger and it has proven to be a great Bass fly. Plus, if you are new to Fly Tying, it is a great fly for you to begin with as it is not difficult, the materials are common and it has all the basic skills you need in any flies you might tie. Enjoy

The Rubber Spider may look like a simple little fly and on the surface you might think it doesn't have much going for it but you would be very mistaken. The simple Rubber Spider is a fantastic fly in (almost) all waters that have fish. Around the Midwest it is a staple for panfish. Cast one of these on any pond, lake or stream here in warmwater country and you will be catching fish. It is also a great terrestrial fly for trout. Don't let the simplicity of this fly lead you to think it is limited in where it can be fished. The Rubber Spider is a fun, basic fly that can be just what is needed on may a warm summer evening!

Tying The Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear Nymph - Dressed Irons

Abdomen: Light Hare's Mask underfur

Thorax: Darker Hare's mask fur with guard hairs and underfur mixed.
The Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear is a nymph that has been around for as long as I can remember. It was actually one of the first trout nymphs I ever fished when introduced to the technique of nymphing. When I decided to tie this fly for Dressed Irons and do a video I began researching the fly to find out it's origins and history. To my surprise, I hardly found anything on the history of the Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear. I consulted a number of fishing and fly tying books I have on trout nymphs and most mentioned the fly but not much on it's history. I did the proverbial "google" search and came up with lots of pages that explained the fly and how it was tied and what it might represent but no history. I even found a Wikipedia page on the "Hare's Ear" but again, nothing really on the origins or the history. So, for now, I don't have much about this fly from a past perspective other than my own past experiences. If anyone reading this know anything of the origins or the history of this fly, please leave a comment below and I will gladly update this page as well as my gray cells.

Art Flick created the Blacknose Dace bucktail fly back in the 30s and it is still a very effective pattern and one everyone should have in their streamer box. A simple design that incorporates all the characteristics of the real Blacknose Dace minnow and definitely catches fish. Originally tied on a short(er) shank hook most are tied on longer shanks these days. Some people even tie these on a 9x Carrie Stevens hook but most are tied on a 4x or 5x long streamer hook. Whatever streamer hook you have should work just tie some up and find out how it does. If nothing else, you'll have fun tying this classic bucktail streamer.

The Red Fox Squirrel-Hair Nymph is one of the most versatile nymphs ever created. Very simple in it's design but it has the ability to mimic many different types of aquatic insects. This fly can be fished under an indicator or without and does a fantastic job attracting fish as it drifts along the bottom. I have used this pattern while fishing for trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass as well as various panfish. With slight color variations and/or adding rubber legs you can make the Red Fox Squirrel-Hair Nymph even more enticing.

Dahlberg Flashdancer - Dressed Irons
Hook: Mustad 3366, #4
Thread: Wapsi UTC Ultra Thread 70 Denier, White & 100 Denier GPS White
Tail: Marabou, Red
Body: Medium Rayon Chenille, White
Underwing: Flashabou, Gold

The Dahlberg Flashdancer was originally created to help non-fly fishers use fly fishing equipment to catch Smallmouth Bass. It is a simply fly to tie and in it's simplicity lies it's effectiveness. The colors and structure are similar to any given baitfish but the extra flashabou really draws in the fish. If you like swinging streamers to Smallmouth Bass you need to have a few Flashdancers in your fly box. If you prefer Largemouth Bass, the Flashdancer is a great fly for your favorite lakes and ponds!

Tying The Mop Fly - Dressed Irons
Hook: Tiemco 105, #6
Thread: Wapsi UTC Ultra Thread 70 Denier, Black
Body: Chenille Mop material, Tan
Bead: 3/16" Tugnsten bead, Matte Black
Dubbing: Black, SLF or Black Lifecycle Dubbing
Hackle: Hen Neck Hackle, Black
The Mop fly is a simple fly to tie but very effective at catching multiple fish species. The body is made from short chenille pieces cut from a mop, thus the name. You can get them in many different colors so you can have flies to suit many fishing applications.
Note: Updated 05-24-2019 - in the video I mentioned that the Mop material comes in one size, I have discovered I am wrong. It can be found on various "mops" in smaller sizes in case you are looking to tie a smaller fly.

Tying The Professor - Dressed Irons
Hook: Mustad 3366 or 3906, size #6 & #8
Thread: Wapsi UTC Ultra Thread 70 Denier, Black & White or Danville 6/0 Black & White
Tail: Rooster Saddle Hackle Fibers, Red
Rib: Danville 16/18 Mylar Tinsel
Body: Danville 4-Strand Rayon Floss, use only 2 strands
False Hackle: Schlappen Hackle, Brown
Wing: Mallard Flank Feather, Natural
The Professor was originally tied as a trout wet fly a long time ago. It has made a nice transition to the warmer waters of the Midwest and is a very productive panfish fly. Originally tied with Goose Shoulder for the tail (actually Ibis) this version is tied with Rooster Saddle hackle fibers and make the fly a little more durable for greedy little panfish. If you are looking for a good introduction to tying wet flies The Professor is a great place to start.
