This is the second to last tying video in a short series on the well known Woolly Bugger. This version was one I learned from an old Left Kreh and Bob Clouser fly tying tips video (VHS back in the day). In this version Lefty Kreh twists up the chenille and the hackle to help reinforce the hackle on the fly. It might not look as pretty as the palmered version but it is sturdy and almost bomb proof. I always thought it was an interesting take on the Woolly Bugger and over the years it has stuck with me. --Enjoy

The Gunnison is another wet fly from Ray Bergman's book Trout (page 432, plate #4). A wet fly similar to the Apple Green but the wing is made from White Tipped Turkey. Since Turkey feathers and I have a Love/Hate relationship, I am not 100% certain just which feather to get the "White Tipped Turkey" from but for the purposes of the video am using a Mottled Turkey feather and focusing on the areas of the feather with the white tips to the slips. Another wet fly to get me closer in my quest to understanding Turkey feathers! --Enjoy

Carrie Stevens had a habit of naming flies after people in her life. The Don's Special was named for George Donald Bartlett, a fishing client of her husband. She named two other flies for Mr. Bartlett. There is the Don's Delight ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frU8SiIduRo ) and the G. Donald Bartlett. It is a handsome fly with the blue and the gray in the wing. They contrast well with the yellow in the tail and throat. -- Enjoy

Carrie Stevens had a habit of naming flies after people in her life. The Col. Bates, or Shang's Special were examples of flies named after close friends. However, there are a few patterns she named after people that somehow crossed her path and little is know of them. The Doctor White is one of those flies. A wonderfully colorful fly, the Doctor White is a great streamer imitation but little is know about the person it is named after or why it was created. Regardless, I, for one, am glad she did create it. It is a fun fly to tie! -- Enjoy

The Mr. Peanut is another fun and quick Hopper pattern. Because of the two layers of closed cell foam this fly floats high on the water and has a broad profile. As simple as this fly is to tie you can tie all sorts of color variations for needed fishing situations or for personal preference. Smaller sizes (#10 & #12) are great for panfish! -- Enjoy

I must apologize... I have been referring to this fly as the "Dave's" special but it is actually the "Davis" special. Must be time to get my glasses tweaked! The Davis Special is a handsome fly with the claret hackle and the golden Pheasant tippet. I took the opportunity to do supplemental video on how I assembled the wings on the Davis Special. There are just a few things that must be taken into consideration when assembling the wings when there is a shoulder involved. -- Enjoy

As I mentioned in the video for assembling the wings for the Canary this is the supplemental video for assembling the wings for the Davis Special. I must apologize... I have been referring to this fly as the "Dave's" special but it is actually the "Davis" special. I did an additional video for assembling these wings because there is a shoulder in the Davis Special which has different consideration when picking out the feathers and sizing for the shoulder.
All in all, this video does explain in detail the selection of various feathers, how I process them as well as how I cement them together. There is enough information and instruction in this video to get you started assembling your own wings for some Carrie Stevens streamers.
Included below is a link to the Hilyard book I mention in the video as well as links to the articles by Don Bastian on cementing these wings. - Enjoy

The Stimulator is a very well know dry fly that represents all sorts of surface insects; both aquatic and non-aquatic insects. Although I used deer hair in this version many people like to you Elk hair for both the tail and the wing. You can vary the dubbing, the color of the dubbing as well as the colors of the hackle to create all sorts of Stimulators for many fishing conditions. As well, many people like to add some flash under the wing and rubber legs to get the fly noticed even more. Great for coldwater and warmwater species. -- Enjoy

The Mini Flopper is the scaled down version of the Stoneflopper. A great little terrestrial fly for coldwater and warmwater fly fishing. The fly rides right in the surface film and stays afloat even after catching many fish. This is a quick fly to tie and can easily be tied in various colors with different materials to work in almost every fishing situation where surface bugs are being focused on. tie some up and get on the water before the terrestrial bite is done for the year! -- Enjoy

The Canary is a straightforward Carrie Stevens pattern that is a good pattern to get started in tying her style of streamer flies. I took the opportunity with this fly to do a supplemental tying video on how I process and assemble the wings for the Canary. Unfortunately, I was so focused on discussing the wings and how they are tied in while actually making the video that the head of this fly got away from me. Normally, the heads are not this long but it just goes to show that it is easy to make them to big or too small. Sometimes creating these tying videos is like trying to chew gum and walk at the same time.... you either bite your tongue or trip over your feet from time to time! -- Enjoy

I have been tying a number of Carrie Stevens streamers lately and have mentioned that I would be doing a supplemental tying video on how I assemble the wings for the Carrie Stevens teamers. This video shows how I select, process and assemble the wings for the Carrie Stevens streamer the Canary. The framing is not the best as I am trying to get used to the "over the shoulder" angle and presentation. Fortunately, I will be doing a second video on the selection, process and assembly of the wings for the Carrie Stevens Dave's Special streamer (which will be out in about two weeks). The Dave's Special has a shoulder of Golden Pheasant were as the Canary has no shoulder. I shall endeavor to get the process framed better as well as get sharper close ups.
All in all, this video does explain in detail the selection of various feathers, how I process them as well as how I cement them together. There is enough information and instruction in this video to get you started assembling your own wings for some Carrie Stevens streamers.

The Colonel Bates was a fly Carrie Stevens came up with for her friend Joseph D. Bates. It was first called the Captain Bates and later changed to the Major Bates. It is a very productive pattern that has been adapted for all sorts of fishing conditions including a number of Atlantic Salmon patterns. The wing has two different colored hackles in it. There are two yellow hackles (on each side) with one white hackle that is a little shorter than the yellow. It is still a very productive fly to this day. -- Enjoy

The Hornberg has been around for about 100 years and still remains popular today. There are various ways the fly is tied these days and I discuss some of those in the video. As well, the fly can be fished as a dry fly or a wet fly. It was created back in the 1920's by Frank Hornberg and still catches fish today. Another fly I like to refer to as a "bread and butter" fly as it is very common and it gets the job done. -- Enjoy

The Luzerne is another wet fly from Ray Bergman's book - Trout (page 437, plate #5). It is a very basic wet fly, which wet flies do not have to be complicated. Three components and straightforward in it's construction. Although tied as a trout fly I am certain the Panfish would take to this fly very quickly. This would be a fun fly to change up some of the colors and/or materials to see what works best for the Bluegill. -- Enjoy

The Skip's Dad is a wonderful crawdad imitation for warmwater species. I think it would work well for Trout as well if they happen to target crayfish but it was created and is mostly fished for warmwater species. It is a quick fly to tie with uncomplicated claws, shell and tail. I first discovered the Skip's Dad from Skip Morris' book The Art of Tying the Bass Fly ( https://amzn.to/45lVlOe ). It is a great fly for shallow and clear water where you might be sight fishing but I also like to swing it under a strike indicator through deeper holes and runs like you would a nymph. All in all, a fun fly to tie as in the video or in other colors and a great fly to always have in your fly box. -- Enjoy

The Marlow Buzz is another wet fly from Ray Bergman's book - Trout (page 437, plate #5). It is another nice caddis representation and a quick and easy fly to tie. It only has three components. Like the Martson's Fancy ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJ0VlyaaqLc ) the peacock body has no protection so you cold put in a wire rib to help the fly last a little longer. -- Enjoy

I have been wanting to tie some more featherwing streamers, in particular some Carry Stevens patterns lately. I had a follower reach out to me and ask if I could tie the Carrie's Fancy and thought this would be a great time to get back into tying these wonderful flies. She tied so many patterns that it is hard to find the history on all of them. The Carrie's Fancy is, what I would call, a basic featherwing pattern. Basic in the sense that it has all the pieces and parts that many of these types of flies have. The tag on this fly is a little longer than most but there are many patterns that do have a shorter body and longer tag. If you are wanting to start tying this type of fly, the Carrie's Fancy is a nice one to start with; not too complicated. -- Enjoy

The Marston's Fancy is another wet fly from Ray Bergman's book - Trout (page 437, plate #5). It is a nice Caddis pattern that is very simple and basic. There is no tip, tag or rib on the Marston's Fancy. I talk a little in the video about the possibility of putting a rib of small wire on this fly to make it a little more durable. All in all, a fun fly to tie and just as productive today as when it was first created. -- Enjoy

The Gill Killer is another local panfish pattern to the Northeast Indiana region. I was asked to tie some for a couple of people in that area and they mentioned that it is great for those warmwater species. It is a very simple fly that can be modified very easily to make it productive in many fishing situations (or just for fun). - - Enjoy
