Aerial views of Moon World, Tianliao District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. Moon World is part of a stretch of badlands that cover a large swath of southern Taiwan near the central mountain range. Typical badlands are found in dryer climates, are composed of sedimentary rocks, typically have very little vegetation, and have deep valleys or ravines. The badlands in Taiwan are unique in that they are in a tropical rain forest. The rocks at Moon World are composed of mudstone, sandstone, shale, and chalk. Because of high alkaline levels due to chalk in the soil, trees and grass cannot grow, and basically the only plant that can grow in the soil is spiny bamboo. The lack of vegetation as well as high rainfall gives way to quick eroding hills, or badlands. The Roman Catholic church in rural Taiwan was designed by German architect Gottfried Böhm (23 January 1920 – 9 June 2021). It was designed and built in the end 1950s. In front of the building is a plaque bearing the inscription: 聖十字架堂這座帶有德國傳統教堂或城堡神秘氣氛的教堂，則建於1960年完成。1986年榮獲建築最高榮譽的桂冠一普立茲獎。 Holy Cross Church, a church with the mysterious atmosphere of a traditional German Church or castle, was built and completed in 1960. The mountain road provides magnificent views into the valley of Laonong River and to adjacent mountain scenery. Between August 6, 2009, and August 10, 2009, Taiwan was hit by Typhoon Morakot, which brought about unprecedented rainfall and flooding across the country. Kaohsiung saw over 2,500 millimeters of rainfall within three days. Many people died in this devastating flooding incident. Huge damage occurred to the infrastructure, including in the valley of Laonong River. The Southern Cross-Island Highway 南橫公路, also known as Provincial Highway No. 20, links Tainan City on the west coast to Taitung City on the east coast of Taiwan. The highest point of the road, Yakou, is 2,722 m above sea level. The route was cut through the mountains in the early 1970s, but the highest sections were not properly paved until 1992. The highway was badly damaged by Typhoon Morakot in 2009 and has been closed ever since. At time of filming, the road was open from west to Tianchi at an elevation of 2,280 m (on certain days and hours). Heaven’s pond, Tianchi 天池 and Changqing Shrine 長青祠 are the furthermost point accessible from west on highway no. 20 currently (2020 May).
