War or Peace — What is Your Vision for the Future
War or Peace? Our world longs for peace and a way out of misery, suffering and death. But is the world willing to make the changes necessary to eradicate war and promote peace? Are there too many people in the world who love war and hate peace? Are there those whose conflicting passions, envy, selfishness and evil deeds make war the natural consequence? The Lord God, the Word of God, makes it clear that there is no peace for the wicked, it is merely a matter of cause and effect.
The story of Jehu and his overthrow of Ahab's dynasty is a case in point. It is self-deception to think that idolatry, murder, and deceit can produce anything but conflict — war! Yet the scriptures give us more than warnings of future warfare it also give us hope of future peace. This vision of peace is taught from Genesis to Revelation and the prophecies of a future time of peace are promises made by the God who never lies and is ever-faithful.
Do you know what the scripture teaches in regards to how peace will be achieved and the scourge of war will end? And have you considered how these prophecies are meant to impact our daily lives, giving us hope and providing us with wisdom to walk in peace now?
Let's search the scriptures together to understand God's mind on the matter of war or peace.

Is Anti-Semitism Good or Bad Theology?
Jesus said that a good tree would produce good fruit and a bad tree would produce bad fruit. When we consider the conflict between Hamas and the state of Israel, we realize it is a theological controversy. This controversy and the underlying anti-semitism has ancient roots and the tree has either produced good or bad fruit.
But we will start to examine the story beginning with the history of the Roman world at the time of the Jewish revolts in the first and second century. We will briefly look at the causes of a rising anti-semitism in the state and a subsequent adoption of anti-semitic bias in the early Roman church. We will consider the question of why the early Roman church fathers forsook their Hebrew roots and developed a new 'Gentile Christianity.'
Then we will examine the scriptures to determine God's attitude towards his people and how he dealt with them when they failed to live up to their covenant. God made and reiterated promises to his people, so we must ask whether the God we worship as Christians is a God who keeps his promises. Can we count on God to be good to his word? And if so, do we have the same mindset that God has when it comes to the issue of anti-semitism.

Salvation is of the Jews??
In a time of rising anti-semitism, Jesus statement that 'Salvation is of the Jews' seems antithetical to many who consider themselves Christians. So what was Jesus talking about and how should it direct our thought and action today?
Understanding the context of this scripture gives us the first clue and provides us with more questions. Who were the Samaritans, what did they believe and what was their relationship to the scriptures? Answering these questions in their historical context helps us understand what Jesus said and why he said it.
The apostle Paul in writing to the Romans also made some statements about the Jews that the Romans of the day and modern religious folks find difficult to understand. Join us as we search the scriptures to discern God's attitude towards the Jews, so we can be in harmony with him and his perspectives.

Attached to God — The Remedy for Separation
Are we 'attached' to God and what does this mean in daily life? Gordon Neufeld, an inspiring speaker has proposed a developmental model for human growth based on the power of attachment of children to nurturing parents. This model is also useful in considering our spiritual parent, our Father, and our relationship to him as his children. Just as children attach to parents and family life, so God's children are in a deep and abiding, lifelong relationship with him. We need to be close to God, imitating his actions, loyal to his values, feeling loved and appreciated, and knowing that God understands our deepest yearning. And yet. there are times when we misstep, derail, and fall short of God's expectations for us. What then? Is God only there for us when we please him? Or does God provide a remedy to bridge those things that separate us from God?
Consider this powerful hope that we have in God's grace and mercy, so we can continue to walk with him even after we have stumbled. And then consider the implications for family life and mending relationships between parents and children.

Do You have a Generous Spirit?
A spirit of generosity is an element that has united brethren for millennia, beginning in those very first weeks when the brethren in the Jerusalem church supported those who had travelled from afar with food and lodging. Our generosity towards others is an outgrowth of God's generosity towards us, for not only has he provided all of our physical benefits but he has given us the great hope of eternal life. Paul in writing to the brethren in Rome, reiterated the vital importance of giving generously in our service to God and to those in our care. He asks us to reflect on whether our spiritual sacrifice reflects that generous spirit in the use of the gifts we have been given. Whether writing to the Corinthians or Ephesians or speaking with the Macedonians or the Greeks in Athen's his generosity of spirit was evidenced in how he treated the believer and the non-believer. Are we living with a deep appreciation of God's graciousness towards us and are we living with that same generosity of spirit in our interactions with others? It's time to consider how we can better reflect God's nature in this matter.

Prayer — When Prayer is Under Attack
There is a major push to remove prayer to God, our heavenly Father, out of the public square. Prayer has been challenged by those who don't believe it can make.a difference.
So what should we be doing as people who believe and follow the scriptural narrative?
Jesus had a lot to say about prayer in response to the formulaic prayers of the religious leaders of his time. He knew useless repetitive prayers were unproductive. But he also used parables to teach the importance of praying faithfully and with persistence. God does hear our prayers and will answer, but perhaps not in the way we might expect or according to the timetable we have in mind. Consider the example of Hezekiah and the outcome of his prayers to God in the face of an overwhelming foe - the Assyrians who had conquered all the land outside of Jerusalem. Be encouraged by Hannah's prayer and God's speedy answer. And understand the importance of being patient and persevering as you examine the life of Paul and see the way in which God answered his prayer to be with the brethren in Rome.

Hamas Attacks Israel: A Scriptural Refletion
Two millennia ago, Jesus Christ had a message for the people of Judea that resonates in our world. He spoke of the tragedies of his time when the Galileans were murdered by Pilate and the Tower of Siloam fell and many were killed. He also reflected on the nature of Jerusalem and its people in his day and what the future had in store for the people of Israel in Judea.
This message harkened back to the Song of Moses written before Israel entered their promised land. It was a song recounting Israel's wilderness experience and prophesying about the future of the people and the land. Many of its verses seem to have a partial fulfillment in our time - a time when the people of Judah have surprisingly returned to their inheritance and been re-established in the land centuries after the destruction of their temple state.
Listen to the prophecies of Isaiah and Zechariah to gain insight into what was foretold by God. They reveal a picture of God's justice, his mercy and his purpose for Israel that will be fulfilled in the future. God is faithful and he will deal justly with the evil-doers and those who turn to him for mercy. Consider the message of the prophets to us and be encouraged in spite of the times of trouble that we may be enduring at the present.

Gratitude to God - A Message for Canadian Thanksgiving
Our gratitude, whether formal worship as the congregation of God, or living with a thankful heart for all of God's blessings, is important to God. Are we among the meek, who express their appreciation to God, and who will inherit the promises? Do we have this dynamic relationship with God that will lead to eternal life?

Reviving the Household of God
Throughout history, the people of God have faced times when the ‘household of God’ has collapsed, and the people have been scattered. So it is no surprise that the scriptures offer advice about how we are to live in such times of uncertainty. In each generation there is a call to return to the active faith that will allow the re-establishment of God’s way of life in the community of believers. The story of Zerubbabel and the return from Babylonian exile offers us many lessons. And we learn from the prophets that just as God gave the ancient Israelites a hope and a future, so God gives his people now an even greater hope and responsibility.

Repairing the Breaches
Isaiah understood that those who would repair the breaches in society would need God’s direction and power. Jesus spoke to his disciples of the need to pursue what was righteous — by speaking the truth and living in harmony with God’s laws. The gospel writers contrasted the lifestyle of those who would repair the breach between God and humanity, with those who were self-serving and disobedient, the false teachers. Paul encouraged believers to embrace their role of restoring the paths of God. They needed to be motivated by love and a spirit of service, so they could use God’s wisdom and their spiritual gifts to bring healing — repairing the breaches and rebuilding what had been destroyed. Will we be prepared to help restore the breaches when the Lord God establishes the Messianic Kingdom?

Amos Message from God to Us
Amos prophesied that God would “sift the people through the nations” and not a kernel of the faithful remnant of the people would be lost. The Lord God came to earth as Jesus the Messiah to fulfill the messages given by the prophets to Israel. Amos prophesied that there would come a time of building and renewal of the nation of Israel. Jesus and the apostles repeated these promises. Do we believe this message of hope for the future concerning the millennial rule of Christ?

Atonement and Jubilee — Forgive us Our Debts
The Lord’s Prayer has interesting parallels to the themes of the day of Atonement. This is especially true when it comes to ‘forgive us our debts.’ Often we think of these debts as ‘sins’ — missing the mark or sins of commission. But it also has the sense of not having fulfilled a duty — sins of omission. We owe God for those times when we failed to do our duty, and yet, he is faithful to forgive these debts. But there is a caveat. He says he will forgive our debts to the degree that we are willing to forgive the debts of others. As his children, God is asking us to let go of the wrongs we have suffered, the debts that have not been paid to us, and the resentments we might be harbouring due to unfulfilled duties that we are owed.
This ties in directly with Atonement and the message of the Jubilee.

Judgement and Justice - God's Standards
Judgement and Justice are vital issues in the mind of the Creator. In teaching the children of Israel the Lord God spelled out in detail his code of holiness - those things that were just and right in his sight. When it came to matters of judgement, the Lord God expected impartiality and a fair application of the laws that he had given the people. In contrast to the unjust rulers of his day, Christ instructed his followers to consider the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy and faithfulness in their relationships with others. When the Lord returns as Messiah to save his people one of his roles will be that of judge executing justice — rewarding the righteous and destroying the wicked.
So what does God expect of us today? Do we understand the weightier matters of the law? When we must make judgments, are we careful to judge with fairness and impartiality based on the standards set by God?

Atonement or Too Late for Repentance?
The story of Esau is a sad tale of someone who could not repent and repair the damage done when he despised his birthright and traded it for a bowl of stew. Sometimes it is too late for repentance. The generation of those who saw all of God's miracles in delivering them from Egypt lost out on their promised land. They too had put themselves into a situation where it was 'too late for repentance.' The history of God's people is full of examples where communities and individuals habitually despised and rejected God's word, his instructions, and refused to repent. On the other hand God had made provisions in his teaching for atonement. God would forgive those who sinned unwittingly and then willingly acknowledged their errors and took steps to make amends.
Have we sinned to the point that we are concerned that it is too late for repentance? Examine the life of Paul, the mercy God extended to him and the commission he gave him. Consider John's wisdom on the topic of propitiation for sin and Christ's atoning sacrifice. We need not walk a path of opposition to God and his ways. There is time yet to repent and change and find atonement.

Feast of Trumpets - The 7Seventh Trumpet & Christ's Reign Begins
When the seventh trumpet sounds it will usher in the return of Christ and the establishment of the Kingdom of God. This vision of the future seems fantastical. And yet it has been prophesied for millennia. Daniel wrote of this cataclysmic change in world governance when he revealed the meaning of King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. The dream was an allegory of a great statue representing the great world powers in succession, beginning with the Babylonian King as the head of gold. As history has confirmed, the silver kingdom of Medo-Persia, and the bronze kingdom of Greece, were followed by successive resurrections of the great Roman system. And yet, ultimately all of these great civilizations will be destroyed, so that not a trace of them will be found. But what will replace these corrupt oppressive systems of governance?

Pro Choice? Choose life!
Pro- Choice? Make the Wise Choice!
Today's abortion debate is framed in terms of pro-life or pro-choice, as if they are opposing ideas. But can we believe in choice and choose life? The God of scripture is vehemently pro-choice, as he has given everyone freewill. However, he does not leave us without guidance and the instructions we need to live well. The Lord God tells us to choose, and that the choices we have are between choosing death or life. But make no mistake, for God commands us to choose life! This is not only for our good, but for the good of our descendants, and society as a whole. Our choices make a difference, and not just for us. So what will we choose for ourselves, and our children? Will we listen to the advice of our Maker?

Children of God — Spiritual DNA — Who is Your Father
Children of God — Spiritual DNA
The religious leaders of Jesus’ day claimed that they were children of God, and heirs of the promises made to Abraham. The irony was that they were also plotting to murder Jesus, something that would have been anathema to Abraham, their forefather. Jesus’ took the opportunity to discuss with them the issue of ‘Who is your Father,’ and point out the reality of who his Father was. Jesus’ observations infuriated them. Do you know what he said and why?
The question of who is our ‘progenitor’ spiritually speaking is still of vital importance and in many interesting ways our spiritual DNA mirrors the functions of physical DNA. Join us as we examine the scriptures and come to a deeper understanding of God’s spirit and how it works in us to fulfil a host of critical functions.
