1880s Cubley Banjo: Cheap Luscomb KNOCK OFF?
Banjo Heritage 👉 https://patreon.com/CliftonHicks
E.J. Cubley manufactured banjos in Ravenswood, Illinois (Chicago) between 1881 and 1891. Many Cubleys appear to be copies of Buckbee and Dobson designs, but this example is clearly a knock-off J.F. Luscomb's 1888 patent made by Thompson & Odell in Philadelphia.

Indian Tribes of Tennessee - Traditional Banjo Lesson
Banjo Heritage 👉 https://patreon.com/CliftonHicks
Played on a 1940s (Gretsch) Bacon "Belmont" banjo tuned eAEAB ~ gCGCD. I learned "Indian Tribes of Tennessee" from recordings of Addie Graham, L.P. Carlock, Dee Hicks, and Bessford Hicks. Alternate titles include "The Cumberland," "Old Cumberland Land," and "Pioneer's Letter." It's mention of indigenous society in eastern Tennessee suggests the song was composed before 1830.
Many versions of the song include a reference to prehistoric mound-building in the area: "I found six hundred human graves all walled inside Freemason works, which made me think in days gone by some human race did pass this place."
The above verse is absent from the version below, printed in 1853:
When I first started away from you,
With grief and sorrow and trouble too,
You gave to me the parting hand,
And wished me safe on the Cumberland.
When we were on the ice and snow,
It rained it hailed the wind did blow,
And some of us did mourn and cry,
To think with cold we all must die.
But bless the Lord some relief is found,
We're landed here both safe and sound,
In a lonesome place but fruitful soil
There's milk and wine, and corn and oil.
I have one more line to write to you
Religion's dull and preachers few,
We're here in peace and like to be
With the Indian tribe on the Tennessee.
My friends behind I would like to see
If from this task I could get free,
To preach I'm bound and may it be
With the Indian tribe on the Tennessee.
And if on earth we meet no more
I hope to meet on Canaan's shore,
And there we'll sing and happy be
With the Indian tribe on the Tennessee.
- The Revivalist: A New Selection of Hymns and Spiritual Songs (Glass,1853)
"But a lesser-known song paints an even more particular picture of the area; this remarkable ballad is known variously as “Old Cumberland Land,” “The Cumberland,” or “The Indian Tribes of Tennessee.” An epistolary ballad in the form of a letter written by a woman who came from the East coast to settle with her family on the Cumberland Plateau, it told about the hardships they had to endure and the natural beauty they witnessed:
The day that I parted away from you
In sorrow, grief, and trouble too,
You gave to me your parting hand,
And wished me safe on the Cumberland.
Then on our journey we did steer,
O’er hills and valleys and rivers clear,
Through a desert place in a barren land,
We steered our course for the Cumberland.
When we got there, there was ice and snow;
It rained and hailed and the wind did blow,
Which caused us all to weep and cry,
Staying here with cold we all must die.
But thank the Lord our health we found;
We landed here both safe and sound,
In the happy land, Oh the fertile soil:
Here’s milk, here’s wine, both corn and oil.
We saw ten thousand human graves,
All walled in with mason’s sign,
Which made me think in the days of old,
Some human race had passed this place.
I’ve nothing more to write to you,
Since preaching’s scarce, and religion’s low,
We’re here in love, peace, and hope to be,
With the Indian Tribes in Tennessee.
My love to you I can’t unfold,
It’s like some lovely ring of gold,
It’s round, it’s pure, Oh: it has no end,
So is my love to you my friend.
"This particular version of the song was collected in 1935 from L. P. Carlock of Alpine, in Overton County; it had been handed down from father to son in his family. Other versions of the song have been found in southeastern Kentucky, in Fentress County, and in Crossville. Some omit the stanza about 'ten thousand human graves' walled in with 'the mason’s sign,' which possibly referred to Indian graveyards. Indian symbols would seem strange to settlers in the way a secret Masonic sign would seem strange. Few songs give as gripping a picture of the cruel winters that faced settlers in the wild new land on the Cumberland Plateau."

1940s Gretsch Bacon "Belmont" Banjo
Banjo Heritage 👉 https://patreon.com/CliftonHicks
When the Great New England Hurricane of 1938 swept up the east coast it wiped out Fred Bacon's state-of-the-art banjo factory in Groton, Connecticut. By 1939 Gretsch was producing Bacon & Day banjos under license, and by the end of 1940 had bought the Bacon name as well.
This Bacon "Belmont" banjo was produced by Gretsch between 1946 and 1950 for Montgomery Ward, who offered it "with pick and instructions" for $75. Seventy-five U.S. dollars in 1949 was worth about $860 in today's money.

Banjo Heritage 👉 https://patreon.com/CliftonHicks
I learned "Brother Green" (The Dying Soldier) from a 1920s recording of Rev. Buell Kazee of Magoffin County, Kentucky.
My instrument is an 1888 Thompson & Odell "The Luscomb" banjo tuned eBEG♯B (three frets below gDGBD). I'm using La Bella No. 17 nylon strings, and a 5/8" maple bridge by Joel Hooks.
Oh brother Green come kneel by me
For I am shot and bleeding,
Now I must die no more to see
My wife and my dear children.
The southern foe has laid me low
On this cold ground to suffer,
Stay brother stay and lay me away
And write my wife a letter.
Tell her that I'm prepared to die
And that we'll meet in Heaven,
For I believe in Jesus Christ
My sins are all forgiven.
Go tell my wife she must not grieve
Go kiss my dearest children,
For they will call for me in vain
When I am gone to heaven.

Clifton Hicks - Wild Bill Jones (Guitar)
Banjo Heritage 👉 https://patreon.com/CliftonHicks
I learned "Wild Bill Jones" from George Gibson of Knott County, Kentucky. George played it on a 6-string guitar-banjo tuned DADGAD, with a worn-out 4th string in place of his 6th string.
I've attempted to reproduce Gibson's method as closely as possible, including his instrumental run. Note, however, that George uses a three-finger picking style when playing guitar tunes, but I only use two.
I went out on one day just a rambling holiday
When I met up with that Wild Bill Jones,
He was walking he was talking with my little doney gal
So I bid him for to leaver her alone.
He said my age is twenty-two
Much too old for to be controlled,
So I drew my revolver off from my side
I destroyed that poor boy's soul.
He fell to his knees then he laid on the ground
And he gave one dying moan,
Then he threw his arms up around her neck
He said O darling you are left alone.
Take down your long neck fifth and we'll all get on a spree
For today was the last of that Wild Bill Jones,
And tomorrow will be the last of me.
[original verse by Clifton Hicks]
Don't you tell my momma about the bad things I've done
Won't you tell her just to pray for me,
When I'm hanging on the hangman's tree?

Clifton Hicks - Going Up North (John Jackson)
Support Banjo Heritage 👉 https://patreon.com/CliftonHicks
I learned this song from the recording of John Jackson on the album, "Black Banjo Songsters of North Carolina and Virginia" (Smithsonian Folkways Recordings). Jackson said he learned it from his father, and offered the alternate title, "Can't Get No Letter From My Home." It is likely that his version represents several songs combined into one.
The traditional banjo style I've used here can be described as up-picking, up-stroke, or, erroneously, Pete Seeger style. I learned to pick like this from watching master banjoist, George R. Gibson, of Knott County, Kentucky. My 1888 Luscomb banjo is tuned to gDGBD relative (fCFAC, A=440 Hz, actual).
I'm going up north gonna throw my breeches off
And dance in my long shirt tail all night, honey
Dance in my long shirt tail!
O me O my I can't get no letter from my home, poor boy
What's gonna become of me?
My woman she won't write to me
My babe won't write to me,
She won't write me no letter she won't send me no word
She knows how to make a man feel bad!
High sheriff and the deputy
Riding down the road after me, poor boy
What's gonna become of me?
Honey if they catch me they'll hang me if they can
But they'll hang them an innocent man, poor boy
They'll hang them an innocent man!
Dogs on my track sweet potatoes on my back
Got to make it to my shanty if I can, poor boy
Gotta make it to my shanty if I can!
This piece is closely-related to "Keep My Skillet Good and Greasy" and "Georgie Buck" (Georgia Buck).

Bright Sunny South - Banjo Lesson - Dock Boggs, Doc Watson

I learned "Bright Sunny South" from a 1960s recording of Dock Boggs of Wise County, Virginia. My instrument is an 1888 Thompson & Odell "The Luscomb" banjo tuned fCFA♯C ~ gDGCD.
In the bright sunny South in peace and content
The days of my boyhood I scarcely have spent,
From the deep flowing spring to the broad running stream
Ever dear to my memory and sweet in my dreams.
I will leave my confinement and comfort of life
For the dangers of bloodshed privation and strife,
I have come to conclose and reply with my word
As I shoulder my musket and billet my sword.
My father looked sad as he begged me to part
My mother embraced me with anguish of heart,
My beautiful sister looked pale in her woe
As she grabbed me and blessed me and told me to go.
Dear Father dear Father for me do not weep
For on some high mountain I mean for to sleep,
The dangers of war I intend for to share
For sickness and death I intend to prepare.
Dear Mother dear Mother for me do not weep
For a mother's kind voice I ever will keep,
You have taught me to be brave from a boy to a man
Now I'm going in defense of our own native land.
Dear Sister dear Sister I cannot tell the woe
Your tears and your sorrow they trouble me so,
But I must be a going for here I cannot stand
I am going in defense of our own native land.

Clifton Hicks - Old Rub Alcohol Blues - Dock Boggs
Banjo Heritage 👉 https://patreon.com/CliftonHicks
I learned "Old Rub Alcohol Blues" from a 1929 recording of Dock Boggs. The tune is very similar to Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean," and John Lee Hooker's "Two White Horses."
My instrument is an 1888 Thompson & Odell "The Luscomb" banjo ~ f♯DGAD.
Troubles up and down this lonesome road
Trials all the way around,
But I never knew what trouble was
'Til my darling threw me down.
With nothing but old dirty ragged clothes
My heart strings broken to shreds,
Blues was creeping over my body
Strange notions flying through my head.
The easiest thing that I ever done
Was loving and drinking wine,
And the hardest thing I ever done
Was keeping false charge over my mind.
Well if wine and women don't kill
I've one more method to try,
Soaking up this old rub alcohol
Wash these troubles off my mind.
My pockets they are empty
Like they've oftimes been before,
If I ever reach my home again
I'll walk these ties no more.
When my earthly stay is over
And my last goodbyes I've said,
Bury me near my darling's doorstep
