I learned "Old Rub Alcohol Blues" from a 1929 recording of Dock Boggs. The tune is very similar to Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean," and John Lee Hooker's "Two White Horses."

My instrument is an 1888 Thompson & Odell "The Luscomb" banjo ~ f♯DGAD.

Troubles up and down this lonesome road
Trials all the way around,
But I never knew what trouble was
'Til my darling threw me down.

With nothing but old dirty ragged clothes
My heart strings broken to shreds,
Blues was creeping over my body
Strange notions flying through my head.

The easiest thing that I ever done
Was loving and drinking wine,
And the hardest thing I ever done
Was keeping false charge over my mind.

Well if wine and women don't kill
I've one more method to try,
Soaking up this old rub alcohol
Wash these troubles off my mind.

My pockets they are empty
Like they've oftimes been before,
If I ever reach my home again
I'll walk these ties no more.

When my earthly stay is over
And my last goodbyes I've said,
Bury me near my darling's doorstep
Where the roses bloom and fade.
