Building a Sustainable DIY Tiny House with Reused & Recycled Materials - "The Box Truck Film" Review
Building a DIY tiny house with salvaged, reclaimed, and repurposed materials isn’t just about saving money — it's about making a positive impact on the environment and creating something truly unique. Imagine crafting your tiny house with wood from old barns, salvage windows, and quirky fixtures from thrift stores. Every piece tells a story and adds character that new materials just can’t match.
Whatever your reasons for reducing waste, reusing and/or recycling, you’re sure to be inspired by this “Reuse Rundown”, including cull lumber, reclaimed insulation, antiques & other stuff I used to build a sustainable “off-grid” A-frame cabin and make it a cozy getaway.
In this video I also review “The Box Truck Film” by Alex Eaves https://www.youtube.com/@alexeaves and Derek “Deek” Diedricksen https://www.youtube.com/@relaxshacksDOTcom a documentary about converting an old U-Haul truck into a mobile tiny home on wheels. Watch it now on Prime Video: https://amzn.to/3xQXohS or visit https://www.escapethewaste.com/box-truck-film .

WHY IS REUSE and SALVAGE IMPORTANT?
For starters, it’s the eco-friendly choice. Using reclaimed materials means you’re reducing the demand for new resources, which helps preserve our forests and natural landscapes. Plus, you’re keeping perfectly good materials out of the landfill. It's a win-win for the planet.
From a practical standpoint, reclaimed materials can also be a great deal/value. They’re often cheaper than new materials, which is perfect for those of us on a budget. And let’s not forget about quality — old-growth wood, for example, is often denser and more durable than what you can buy today. These materials have already proven their worth over decades, or centuries.
Building with salvaged materials can also be a fun treasure hunt. You get to explore salvage yards, peruse thrift stores, connect with local collectors, and maybe even trade with fellow DIY enthusiasts. It’s a great way to build community and learn new skills. And in the end, you’ll have a small space that’s not only sustainable and budget-friendly but also packed with personality and history.
So, if you’re thinking about building your own tiny house, funky shack, cozy cottage, ramshackle retreat, or funky fort, consider going the reclaimed route. It’s good for the planet, good for your wallet, and makes for a truly one-of-a-kind hangout. Watch to see how I’ve incorporated these materials into my own tiny cabin and get inspired to start your own sustainable building adventure!

BENEFITS OF DRIP IRRIGATION
Drip irrigation systems offer several benefits for a square foot raised bed garden:
1. Water Efficiency: Drip irrigation delivers water directly to the root zone of plants, minimizing water waste through evaporation and runoff.
2. Reduced Weed Growth: By targeting water delivery, drip systems help prevent weed seeds in non-targeted areas from germinating.
3. Consistent Moisture Levels: This system maintains consistent soil moisture, promoting healthier plant growth and reducing stress caused by irregular watering.
4. Time Savings: Automated drip systems reduce the time and effort required for manual watering, allowing gardeners to focus on other tasks.
5. Disease Prevention: By keeping foliage dry, drip irrigation minimizes the risk of fungal diseases that thrive in wet conditions.
6. Improved Nutrient Delivery: Drip systems can be used to deliver fertilizers directly to the plant roots, ensuring efficient nutrient uptake.

TOUR & BUILD UPDATE: Tiny A-Frame Cabin Built From Scratch
See how our tiny cabin has transformed from a cold unfinished shell into a cozy all-season getaway. I call it a Man Cave. My wife calls it a She Shed. Whatever you call it, watch to the end for the official naming of my interpretation of 'The Dart' — a unique half A-frame design by Derek "Deek" Diedricksen.

Picking up where I left off after getting the cabin dried-in before last winter, you'll see how it has been insulated for the bitter cold winters here in northern Illinois. On the inside I'll show you the hardwood flooring i chose, rustic-style wall coverings, and a wood-burning stove. On the outside, two kinds of corrugated roofing were used to stop the leaking, and some decorative elements complete the "shanty chic" look. I’ll also show you the secret storage compartments in the floor, rustic decor, and custom furniture I built to make the most of this small space.
You’re sure to enjoy the real reactions of my friends and family upon seeing it for the first time.
It might look to others like I am just pretending to live off-the-grid in a backyard cabin. But I am actually using this backyard homestead project as a way to prep for the day I can do it in real life.

One Man's Alaska (2023) - Dick Proenneke In His Own Voice Living Alone In a Wilderness Log Cabin
Rediscover Dick Proenneke unfiltered in this AI-enhanced and updated version of One Man's Alaska, originally released in 1977. Hear him in his own voice talking about the diverse variety of animals and seasonal changes he experienced while living alone year-round in the Alaskan wilderness -- for what would end up being 30 years. Also included is additional footage of Dick's final visit to the log cabin he built at Twin Lakes in Lake Clark National Park.

One Man's Alaska offers a peek into the extraordinary life of outdoorsman and naturalist Richard "Dick" Proenneke. This timeless masterpiece has been digitally enhanced in 4K to inspire new audiences and continue serving as a reminder of the indomitable human spirit -- and the profound beauty of the natural world.
The documentary unfolds against the backdrop of Lake Clark National Park, a place where nature reigns supreme and the rugged terrain challenges even the most seasoned adventurers. Armed with little more than hand tools and unshakeable determination, Proenneke created a self-sustaining off-grid homestead for himself amidst the breathtaking beauty of Twin Lakes.
Proenneke documented his solitary wilderness lifestyle using a 16mm Bolex Rex 5 movie camera three decades before smart phones, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok existed. This film prominently features archival footage of the diverse wildlife that inhabit the Twin Lakes area, including grizzly bears, moose, caribou, Dall's sheep, rams, red squirrels, gray jays (a.k.a. Camp Robbers), mallards, ptarmigans, snow rabbits, ermines, wolverines, and more.
This film is not just a visual feast for nature enthusiasts. It's a profound exploration of the human spirit and our innate connection to the natural world. As Proenneke lives off the land, he becomes a part of the intricate ecosystem, forging a strong bond with the wildlife. His intimate encounters with these creatures offer a poignant reminder of the harmonious coexistence possible between humans and the environment. Throughout the documentary, Proenneke's musings offer a meditation on solitude, self-sufficiency, and the profound rewards of a life lived in harmony with nature.
One Man's Alaska is a testament to the enduring power of one man's dream and the boundless potential of the human spirit. It's a celebration of the wilderness and a call to reconnect with the natural world. Richard Proenneke's legacy lives on not only in his remarkable cabin but also in the hearts of all who have been touched by his story.

Amazing DIY Transforming Workbench Project for Makers
This episode showcases the DIY mobile folding workbench project that helped me develop the skills and confidence to build the tiny house A-frame getaway cabin that is the inspiration for this channel. This is NOT a step-by-step instructional how-to video for novice woodworkers. Rather, it is meant to inspire ADVANCED BEGINNERS OR INTERMEDIATE LEVEL woodworkers to level-up with a challenging project that they will be able to use for years to come.
Finding an ideal place for woodworking, model making, jewelry making, leatherworking, electronics, and other DIY or crafting projects is not always easy. This space-saving, roll-around work center instantly transforms any garage, driveway, or basement into a creative maker space. And when stored away, this folding workshop occupies less than six square feet of floor space.
You definitely need some foundational knowledge, experience, and tools to successfully complete this project. However, you DO NOT need to be a master craftsperson. To prove it this video includes a critique of my own work, pointing-out some of the flaws, imperfections and mistakes I made. So don't let the fear of failure stop you from building your own. Challenging yourself and making mistakes is usually the best way to learn and improve. Always remember, "Just Because It's Not Perfect, Doesn't Mean It's Not Good".

How much does it cost to build a DIY tiny house like my A-frame getaway cabin? The plans I used say it can be done for $2000, but that was a few years ago. This video walks through what it costs today.
I'll break down what I spent on basic construction materials, including lumber, hardware (nails, screws, joist hangers, etc.), windows, doors, and general supplies (paint, stain, etc.) versus optional upgrades that added to my total spend.

How Much Does a DIY Tiny Cabin / She Shed Cost To Build?
How much does it cost to build a DIY tiny house, getaway cabin or she shed? The plans I bought to build a small "off-grid" A-frame say it can be done for $2000. This video puts that claim to the test.
I'll break down what I spent on basic construction materials, including lumber, hardware (nails, screws, joist hangers, etc.), windows, doors, and general supplies (paint, stain, etc.). You'll learn bout some of the optional upgrades that added to the total project spend too, including off-grid power (solar panels, charge controller, battery, etc.), insulation, and a wood stove. Budgeting for interior finishing and decor is also covered.
After that I share valuable money saving tips, including where to find the best deals, and the two-word secret that cut my costs in half.
Best of all, you'll meet my lovely wife Alice (she's a lot tougher than she looks), as well as my favorite (and only) mother-in-law, Rosa.

Building a DIY Tiny House A-Frame Cabin - 3 Years and Counting
After 3+ years of planning, scavenging materials, and framing the walls in my garage, this video tells the story of building a DIY 110-square-foot, 4-season, “off-grid” tiny house / A-frame cabin in my semi-rural Illinois backyard. I’ll take you on a guided tour of the unfinished interior, including 3 distinct small spaces that together make it feel surprisingly roomy — even for a fat guy like me.
You’ll also hear the origin story of how a pole barn fire inspired me to undertake this DIY construction project and why it did not need a building permit. It's the start of what I hope to further develop into a self-sufficient backyard homestead, including a sustenance / survival garden, as well as composting and rainwater collection systems... Maybe some chickens and bees too – because prepping is important.
I also share a couple of the many challenges I overcame building this tiny A-frame cabin. You’ll hear the story of how my 85-year-old dad played a critical role “encouraging” me to seriously consider the safety risks involved. You’ll also get a glimpse at how I constructed the rolling mobile platform / foundation for the cabin, pre-fabricated the component parts, insulated the floor, and added storage compartments with faux antique produce crates.
Finally, I talk about the personal satisfaction that makes a project like this worthwhile. Drawing on the wisdom of others who have influenced me, I share how a challenging hands-on DIY project –– complete with pitfalls and setbacks –– can serve as a framework for creating meaning in your life, elevating the potential for greater happiness. Even if you don't yet have the space or tools needed to build a tiny cabin, I outline the 3 basic criteria for a "Soul Project" lifehack that virtually anyone can do, no matter your skill level or housing situation.
Do you accept the challenge? Join the community and share your project pics with me at https://www.patreon.com/bigguyinatinyhouse. Who knows? I might feature it on a future episode of 'Big Guy In A Tiny House'.
If you watch all the way to the end you’ll be rewarded with a fast-motion timelapse showing a fat guy (me), a Puerto Rican Latina (my wife), a high school teacher and Eagle Scout (my neighbor), and an old man (my dad), raising the walls. You'll also see me installing the windows and a custom front door I built from scratch, getting it all dried-in before winter.
