I can't speak for all students but I do outline what my schedule was like and how much I worked. Typically incoming engineering students are afraid that they will be overwhelmed with work and won't be able to have a life outside of school. The day in the life of an engineering student will differ from person to person, but many of the engineers I knew managed to find a balance between school and other activities. A college day doesn't usually involve that much class (maybe around 4 hours on average), so it is important you use your free time and breaks to study or complete homework. Doing this will free up your time in the evening and night or at least reduce the amount of work you need to do. Now be aware there will be semesters where you have a lot of units or you are taking very demanding classes. It is those times where you might be studying for 30-40 hours per week to try to stay caught up with everything. However, from experience not every week was this demanding, it just depends on your classes for that semester/quarter.

Within automotive engineering there are a variety of sub disciplines including safety, performance, vehicle dynamics, fuel economy, cost, manufacturing, and more. For those who want to go into automotive engineering, note that most colleges don't offer it as a major in terms of undergrad. The most common major for people to begin with is actually mechanical engineering. Then after you get your bachelor's you either go into the workforce in the automotive industry, or pursue further education specifically in automotive engineering. While in school you will want to get as much exposure to the field by joining clubs like the society of automotive engineers so you can participate in various competitions. This will give you something to put on your resume and get you that hands on experience that is so valuable for your career. One big area of research at the moment is self driving cars. This is where you'll see much more than just mechanical engineering working on these vehicles. People from all disciplines including electrical engineers, computer engineers, materials engineers, computer scientists, and more are needed for these projects. However, there are more areas of research that are briefly mentioned in the video beyond self driving cars. Many students don't think of true optimal ways of how to get better grades. This book focused more on unique ways to study in order to maximize your time and efficiency. The author did not focus on students who simply studied longer hours to achieve high grades. These aren't exactly study hacks, but just proven study techniques of straight A students. High scoring students often participated in "deep work" where they worked with no distractions but for shorter periods of time. Your brain can only handle so much focus at once, so it's important to take breaks. You should keep a calendar handy for time management purposes. It's important to keep track of what needs to be done on a given day so you don't waste mental energy worrying about remembering everything. Note that even top students couldn't beat the urge to procrastinate, however, they were able to manage that feeling. In the video I discuss 5 ways to manage that feeling of procrastination including... 1) Keep a work progress journal 2) Give Yourself Energy 3) Make Studying an Event 4) Build a Routine 5) Choose your Hard Days Lastly make sure when taking exams to plan out your time for each problem and work from easiest to hardest. If you don't know something during a test, skip it and move on. Some things mentioned may seem difficult to adopt as a habit but if you give it a few weeks it will become second nature and you should see your grades start to improve and even your free time go up. Remember if you want to get better grades it's not just a matter of having more time, it's about managing your time well, organization, and mimicking those who are successful. If you make a habit of proven study tips, you'll see how you can get straight A's in school.

I focus mainly on interviews for internships and entry level jobs. Note that everything in this video can apply to an engineering jobs OR an internship. When interviewing for an engineering company it's possible that you'll be asked technical questions. These are questions where you may have to draw a free body diagram, solve a simple circuit problem, or write a simple program on the whiteboard. These won't be too in depth but it's important to have a foundation for basic engineering principles. You'll be asked some typical interview questions which I discuss in the video such as "What was one obstacle you've had to overcome as an engineer?" And don't forget to ask questions at the end! You want to show that you have an interest in working for the company. You can even prepare questions beforehand that you will ask at the end of the interview. In your labs, you will practice skills that geologists use in the field to better understand our Earth. Earth Science improves our knowledge of how land masses form, predict earthquakes and reduce deaths from seismic events. Aside from going onto earn a Master's or Ph.D., students can obtain entry level jobs in a variety of Earth and Environmental science fields. Geologists work in a variety of fields to improve our agriculture, resource management, urban planning, public safety. They can obtain work in conservation, environmental consulting, academia, project managers, mining, petroleum, and more. Schools will usually have multiple career fairs during the school year and if you are looking for a job or internship, you should definitely go to as many as you can. Here are some things to know before you go to your next career fair Before the Career Fair: 1. Look up which companies will be there 2. Do research on what those companies do 3. Apply online to the positions they are trying to fill 3. Practice your elevator pitch about yourself 4. Print out multiple copies of your resume During the Career Fair: 1. Talk to your top companies first if you are crunched on time. 2. Talk to your second or third choices first if you have time so you can practice your pitch and get comfortable talking to recruiters. 3. Make eye contact while talking 4. Ask questions about the company 5. Don't ask generic questions that can be found easily on their website 6. Ask for recruiter's business card After the Career Fair: 1. The classes you take for both these disciplines are extremely similar. As an aerospace engineer you will take more specific classes such as aerodynamics and propulsion, whereas mechanical engineers will take general fluid mechanics and thermodynamics that cover a wider range of applications. They also both take classes in structures, controls, vibrations, circuits, and more. In terms of careers, aerospace engineers usually go into the aerospace industry and work on air or spacecrafts. But remember they can also work in the automotive industry, petroleum, boats, trains, and more. However, mechanical engineers typically have a wider range of career options because they can go into HVAC, alternative energy, biomedical, manufacturing, and much more. Overall if you know you want to work with aircrafts and spacecrafts, then consider aerospace engineering. If you are not totally sure what you are interested in going into, then consider mechanical engineering. Nanotechnology has applications in medicine, cars, spacecrafts, food, electronics, and materials science just to name a few. Nanotechnology is not a major that is offered at most schools for undergrad. If you want to dive into this field some good majors to consider are mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, bioengineering, chemical engineering, materials engineering, chemistry, and physics. Then you should consider pursuing a master's degree where you can actually specialize in nanotechnology and take classes that pertain to the topic. Because this field is so broad you should be sure to do research and understand what aspect of it you find most enjoyable before making a decision.

Materials engineers will cover the 4 main classes of materials in college including metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites. Materials engineers can find careers in the aerospace, biomedical, automotive, electronics, and manufacturing sector just to name a few. However, this discipline covers a wide range of sectors and careers because basically everything we use is made out of some material that needs to be optimized. Note that we can classify materials science and materials engineering as two different fields, but in college (at least in undergrad), your school will likely call it one or the other (or maybe 'materials science and engineering') and you will be in the college of engineering.

Within the nutrition major, you will draw upon your knowledge of biology, chemistry, and biochemistry to study nutrients within foods and how the human body digests and metabolizes everything we eat and drink. This video also covers how things like aging, illness, exercise, disease, and pregnancy affect our nutritional needs and metabolism. In addition to your science courses, you will take several social science courses that focus on the psychological components that make up nutrition. Within the Nutrition major the two most common concentrations are "Dietetics" and "Nutrition Science." Dietetics is the most common concentration because it is used by students with aspirations of becoming a Registered Dietitian. In addition, this video will give you several potential careers even if you don't become an RD. The other most common concentration that Nutrition majors enter into is the Nutrition Science concentration. Although there are a few career paths Nutrition Science majors can enter into, most students pursue healthcare fields such as medical, dental, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistance. By the end of this video, you will have a superior understanding of what classes you will take, what the concentrations you can enter into, and what careers would be best for you. Some people might have the wrong image of an engineering job which may cause confusion down the road. The good news is that engineers do everything listed. They make computer models, they work with hardware, and they can go to sites where their projects are being constructed. However, you will notice that a large majority of engineering jobs are desk jobs because that's where a lot of design work and engineering drawings are done. The hands on work is often left to technicians, operators, machinists, and construction workers who physically build (and sometimes test) the designs made by the engineers. Note this video only discussed the core engineering work that you'd do at a company and didn't account for meetings, reports, and more of that work that you typically will see at a job as well.

Obviously these will differ from school to school, but should give you an idea for the types of labs you can expect as an electrical engineer. In the beginning of college many of the labs aren't as exciting, such that you are building basic circuits in order to learn different types of equipment and how to test the circuits. Later in college you will then use those circuits for a purpose (for example in the video I talk about using a filter in a radio receiver circuit). Remember that if you want to work on even more large scale projects and get more hands on work then you should really consider joining engineering clubs. In this clubs you can work on robotics, quadcopters, and more projects that you probably imagine when you think about engineering.

There are many types of further schooling you can go into including a master's and phd, medical school, nursing school, pharmacy school, law school, MBA, etc. For many careers like becoming a doctor, dentist, or vet you definitely need that further education, but for many other careers it's not so obvious. People get an MBA when they want to go into a business related field or management of some kind. An MBA is something that can also help you ease your way into the business field from another field like engineering. However, you should wait a few years and get real world experience before pursuing an MBA because it doesn't always help and isn't always needed. Engineers really don't NEED to get anything past a bachelor's in order to start their career. A master's does help for those who want to go more into research though. The people doing research and design work at companies are typically those with higher degrees. Students who are considering chemistry, biochemistry, or biology should really consider getting a master's (assuming they are not going into healthcare like becoming a doctor, pharmacist, etc). It's been said by a lot of graduates that they felt it was tough to move up in their career with just a bachelor's in one of those sciences. If you want to do more of the design work in medicine as an example, you'll need to go beyond a bachelor's. For math and physics you also don't NEED to get a master's or PhD in order to start your career. Pure math students usually will get a master's and PhD because they want to work in academia doing research/become a professor. If you want to do physics research as well then you should get a master's or PhD. Overall getting further education, specifically a master's or PhD, is a great way to increase your salary, learn more about a field, qualify for certain jobs, or have a change in your career. Some of the downsides include how much it costs and the time it will take. Make sure to do your own research on the field you want to go into so you know whether it's worth the time and money. Outside of those main one's though, the concentrations aren't as well defined at every university. I grouped together some large topics within mechanical engineering and explained those in more detail including mechanics, structures, energy, and power. Mechanics and structures is all about analyzing the forces throughout objects and structures, seeing why structures fail, and optimizing the structure of something. This field is for those who want to work on buildings, aircrafts, spacecrafts, boats, and so on to make them structurally stable. Power and energy includes solar energy, wind energy, fossil fuels, fuel cells, and more. This topic is for students who want to help create efficient energy methods and provide power for various purposes. Overall don't focus too much on which subfield of mechanical engineering is best for you, but really try to decide whether the major as a whole is what you want to go into. Once you are in the major itself you will be able to decide which career in mechanical engineering best suits you after you get more exposure.

The main concentrations I discuss in this video are Mechatronics, HVAC, and Manufacturing. Mechatronics is the combination of electrical, mechanical, and computer engineering where you will take classes on microcontrollers, signal processing, and much more.
