The SS Eastland Disaster
Rules regarding safety regulations were quickly overhauled in the wake of the sinking of RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912. But in one remarkable and tragic case, those new rules meant to save lives contributed to a disaster almost as great as the loss of the Titanic herself.

Making Maine
It is March 13, and 346 years ago today the Massachusetts bay colony made a novel purchase. Boston Magazine wrote in 2014: “On March 13, 1677, the imperial dreams of Massachusetts came to fruition. For on that day, our colony bought Maine for £1,250 sterling.”

New England's "Dark Day." May 19, 1780
The History Guy team is planning a trip for 2024 and you could come along! We need your help deciding where to go - fill out our survey. It will help us curate an exciting trip that appeals to YOU.
https://my.trovatrip.com/public/l/survey/TheHistoryGuy
On May 19, 1780, Historian Thomas Campanella explains, “ a preternatural gloom settled upon the New England landscape, and by noon the sun had been all but blotted from the sky.” New England’s “Dark Day” was read as an omen, even, perhaps, as the biblical end of days. But the question has persisted for nearly two and a half centuries- what could have blotted out the Sun?

The "Long Winter" of 1880/81
The winter of 1880/81, popularized by author Laura Ingalls Wilder’s 1940 novel “the long winter” was variously described as “the hard winter” “the black winter” the “long winter,” the “starvation winter,” or the “snow winter.” Journalist J Mark Powell wrote in January, 2018 “Think you’ve seen severe winter weather? No matter how bad it is where you are, it can’t hold a candle to this, the Mother of All Bad Winters.”

Colt Firearms
Last year my son Josh and I got a very special invitation to go meet a group of hobbyists dedicated to preserving a bit of history. I truly appreciate people whose passion for collecting intersects with my love of history. That is why we were so excited to attend the Colt Collectors association’s 42nd annual all colt gun show held just outside Indianapolis in Noblesville Indiana.

USS Texas and the Battle of Okinawa
By March 21st, 1945, the Battleship USS Texas had seen combat across the world. She had been present at the Allied invasion of North Africa, the landings at Normandy, and the invasion of southern France in Operation Dragoon and the landings at Iwo Jima. Despite that long service, she wasn’t done yet, and still faced one of the most dangerous operations of the war: the assault on Okinawa.

The Pirate Monk and Robin Hood
Claim your SPECIAL OFFER for MagellanTV here: https://try.magellantv.com/HistoryGuy. Start your free trial TODAY so you can watch Landslide: the Presidency of Herbert Hoover and the rest of MagellanTV’s history collection.
While there is disagreement over whether the character of Robin Hood is based on a real person, it is clear that the legend was inspired by literary works that predate the Robin Hood legend, some based on real people. One of those was a thirteenth century romance written in verse about a surprisingly Robin Hoodish French nobleman who for a time led a merry band of thieves in the forest engaging in very Robin Hoodish antics. But this particular rogue then realized something that Robin Hood did not- that all good stories involve pirates.

Operation Market Time: the U.S. Coast Guard in Vietnam
The contributions of the U.S. Coast Guard seem often to be forgotten compared to the other services. One example is the service of the Coast Guard in the Vietnam war, including the largest surface naval engagement in that war. It is history that deserves to be remembered.

The Great Blizzard of 1888
The winter of 1888 had been exceptionally mild — until a blizzard struck suddenly, changing the face of New York City and most of the eastern coast of the United States forever. It was the deadliest winter storm in U.S. history. They called it, "The Great White Hurricane."

Fire Aboard HMS Queen Charlotte
A terrifying tale from the Age of Sail. The website of the Penobscot maritime museum was likely being deliberately understated when they wrote: “As one can imagine, wooden ships and fire do not make for a good day at sea.” The fire aboard HMS Queen Charlotte is history that deserves to be remembered.

Ham Radio and Operation Deep Freeze
The eleven nations included in the Antarctic portion of the 1957-1958 International Geophysical Year created several permanent research stations, including the first permanent station at the South Pole. The effort to create a permanent scientific presence at, literally, the end of the earth required enormous effort of scientists and military personnel. Aided, uniquely, by a couple of teenagers from New Jersey.

Bologna: A History
The history of Bologna combines a distant past with modern inventions, immigration patterns, government regulations, and economic necessity, all to arrive at the boloney, mayo and American cheese on white bread staple that USA Today calls “a nutritionally dubious midday meal for millions of US students.”

The Tamale Wars
Though they might not be the king of street food today, a hundred years ago Tamales dominated street corners, with tamale vendors becoming so popular that turf wars broke out. Though it was briefly impossible to avoid tamaleros, they vanished almost as quickly as they came. The history of the “Tamale Wars” is history that deserves to be remembered.

Fort Sumter and the "Third System"
The first battle of Fort Sumter is generally considered to represent the first shots of the US Civil War. The fort at the center of the attack was a modern, but unfinished fortification, that itself represented the unique nation that had gone to war with itself.

1961 Sooty Shearwater Attack on Capitola
Use my link to install Angry Birds Friends for FREE: https://rov.io/historyguy and enjoy popping those piggies!”
On August 18, 1961 the Santa Cruz California Sentinel reported a startling event: “Residents, especially in the pleasure point and Capitola area, were awakened about 3 am today by the rain of birds slamming against their homes.” The 1961 Sooty Shearwater attack on Capitola, that possibly inspired one of the most famous “natural horror” movies ever made, deserves to be remembered.
