The GM "X-Body" and the U.S. Automotive "Malaise."
In 1979 General Motors introduced a radical concept across multiple brands intended to compete with the small imports: an American built, front wheel drive platform for the mainstream, mass-produced market. That attempt to right the ship of American auto manufacturing would almost sink it.

RAF Bomber Command and the "Night of the Strong Winds."
The night of March 24 marked the last large raid by Bomber Command on the German capital. One last try that would provide a unique challenge to 811 British and Commonwealth aircrews in what Bomber Command called “the night of the strong winds.”

Of all the German weapons of the second world war, perhaps none was more feared by allied troops than the dreaded “88.” The gun, of which tens of thousands were produced, and used on all fronts throughout the war, resulted in some particularly compelling stories. These are three accounts of the effectiveness of the 8.8 cm Flak that deserve to be remembered.

1944 Bombing of Miles City, Montana
It was one of those dramatic events in time of war. Civilians, threatened by an invasion by a remorseless and intractable enemy, desperately calling for military bombers to attack that enemy as it surged towards the defenseless town. In a raging storm a brave crew volunteers for the dangerous mission, with the fate of the city in their hands. Such brave acts were often required during the violence of the Second World War. Just not usually in Montana.

Loch Ness Outdone: Rediscovery of the Coelacanth
In 1938 a fisherman in South Africa caught a fish thought to have been extinct for more than fifty million years. The amazing discovery shocked and thrilled the world, challenged our understanding of species and evolution, and gave new meaning to the term "forgotten history."

The Powhatten Disaster
The week of Easter, 1854, a powerful nor'easter, that peculiar type of storm that occurs in the North Atlantic caused when a cold air mass from Canada runs into warm gulf stream current, struck the US and Canadian eastern seaboard. The mighty storm would result in the loss of a ship called the Powhattan, in a story of woe that rivals the most dramatic tragedies of literature.

Hail Storms and History
The Treaty of Brétigny would not, as hoped, put an end to the conflict that would come to be called the hundred years war, but it did represent a significant change in the conflict. What is perhaps most interesting, however, is that the treaty did not result from a military victory by one side or the other. Rather, three weeks earlier, the course of European history had been changed by a hail storm.

1687 Destruction of the Parthenon
The Athenian Parthenon is perhaps the most recognized of the ruins of the ancient world. But how, exactly, did the great temple become a ruin? Was it an ancient battle? A disaster of antiquity? Well, neither. It might surprise you to find out that the building itself remained largely intact into the early modern era.

The Extraordinary Voyage of the USS Marblehead
By May, 1942, nearly half of the forty surface ships of the US Asiatic fleet would be sunk, including the fleet’s largest vessel, the heavy cruiser USS Houston. But the improbable survival of one of the fleet’s vessels, the light cruiser USS Marblehead, is the stuff of legend. The extraordinary voyage of the Marblehead is history that deserves to be remembered.

Orphan Trains
The five decades between 1800 and 1850 saw the United States beginning a massive societal shift toward urbanization, especially in the North East. One result was the proliferation of orphans and runaways living on city streets. One man stepped up to try to solve the problem with an idea that would eventually affect nearly a quarter million orphans

A History of NASA's Supercomputers
While we often take the enormous amount of computing power at our fingertips for granted, it was the predecessors to our ubiquitous machines that first changed the world, quickly making things once thought impossible commonplace. One of the places where those enormous changes were done was at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California, home today to the NASA Advanced Supercomputing Division.

The Toledo War: When Ohio and Michigan Went to War and Wisconsin Lost
In 1835, a dispute based on a faulty map brought the State of Ohio and the Michigan Territory to the brink of war. The "Toledo War" represented the stresses of a growing nation, and rewrote the boundaries of three states. It is history that deserves to be remembered.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire and Forgotten History
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire has been the subject of many books and documentaries, and its story much too large for an episode of the history guy. But recent discoveries have illustrated also the fragile nature of history, as much of the record of one of the most famous events in American history almost became forgotten history.
