Elder Paul V. Johnson was called as a member of the Fifth Quorum of the Seventy and an Area Authority Seventy in June 2003 and then was called to serve as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy in April 2005. He was named a member of the Presidency of the Seventy in August 2021. For nine years Elder Johnson served as commissioner of the Church Educational System of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Previous to his assignment as commissioner, he served in the Chile and Europe area presidencies. Elder Johnson has served in a number of other callings through the years, including stake president’s counselor, high councilor, bishop, elders quorum president, and Young Men president. He served as a full-time missionary in the Norway Oslo Mission. Following his mission, he taught Norwegian at the Language Training Mission at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. While attending BYU, Elder Johnson received a bachelor of arts degree in 1977, a bachelor of science degree in zoology in 1978, and a master of education degree in counseling and guidance in 1982. He went on to receive a doctorate in instructional technology in 1989 from Utah State University. Elder Johnson married Jill Washburn in August 1976. They are the parents of nine children. Through His actions, and specifically miracles, Jesus taught important lessons about faith, kindness, and God’s ability to make great things from our most humble offerings. For example, as a multitude of 5,000 men and an untold number of women and children gathered around Him near Bethsaida, Jesus Christ fed them all with two fish and five loaves of bread. Similar opportunities to teach—sometimes through miracles, and sometimes through His actions—arose when He encountered lepers, rich men, the woman at the well, and the Pharisees. He taught at religious and social gatherings, He taught among the afflicted as He healed them, He taught among the powerful as He rebuked them, and He taught among the sinners as He forgave them. Jesus continues to perform miracles even today. The inspiring accounts of His miracles can help us grow closer to Him. And as we come to know Him, we can experience the miraculous effects of His teachings and grace in our lives. With names of ancestors or others who lived in Nauvoo, Illinois, pinned to their clothes, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and friends made the mile-long walk down Main Street to Parley and then to the Mississippi River on Feb. 4. The annual exodus commemoration marked the 177th anniversary of when the early Church members were forced to leave their homes and began leaving Nauvoo on Feb. 4, 1846. This Church News video titled “Sacred Sacrifice” is created from videos and images of the commemoration provided by media specialists from Iowa and Illinois. Nauvoo Illinois Stake President Matthew J. Thomas said: “We’re here to commemorate these sacred sacrifices that [the pioneers] made and the commitments to what they knew to be true.” Nauvoo Illinois Historic Sites President Craig Lee Dalton told those gathered that as they remember the miracles that the Lord worked with the pioneers, that “we also can go forward with the confidence that the Lord will likewise bless us in miraculous ways.” Historic Nauvoo is open year-round and virtual tours are also available.
