Every day we all have choices that need to be made. Many of those choices do not have any lasting significance, but there are plenty that do. These choices—the decisions between right and wrong—have more serious consequences than, say, what color shirt we wear. Agency, sometimes referred to as moral agency or personal agency, is the ability each person has to choose right or wrong—or, put another way, the ability to either follow God or not. Agency was given to every person as a gift from God. The ability to direct our own lives and make our own choices is one of the greatest gifts God has given us. Just as physical choices have physical consequences, such as getting burned if you get too close to a fire, spiritual choices have spiritual consequences. It is not possible to make a choice without facing its inevitable consequence. Our purpose in this life is to learn, grow, improve, and progress, with the ultimate goal of returning to God’s presence. Personal agency allows us to participate in the learning and growing process that is essential to becoming better and more like our perfect example, the Savior Jesus Christ. On April 6, 2023, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced that Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles would be taking “two months off to focus on his health.” According to the statement, Elder Holland, who did not attend any sessions of the Church’s April 2023 general conference after being diagnosed with COVID-19, is also dealing with a kidney condition and undergoing dialysis. In the video, Elder Holland offers an update on his health and thanks Latter-day Saints for their prayers. “I’m staggering toward the finish line,” Elder Holland says. “I refuse to get off the track. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his wife, Sister Patricia T. Holland, have both dealt with major health challenges in recent years. In each case, their health deteriorated to the point of life or death. “I have felt like everything I have done that’s been a challenge has driven me closer and closer to the Lord — everything. I don't think you can have light without having darkness, and that kind of hope carries you,” she says. In this Church News video, titled “Earned Empathy,” Elder and Sister Holland speak about their health. While some may question why those who are faithful suffer, Elder Holland explains trials and challenges have come to the “best people I've ever known, and certainly the best people I've ever read about.” In many ways, the Hollands’ lives have been shaped by and dedicated to the Savior Jesus Christ and His Church. Elder Holland has served as a general authority since April 1989 and is a former president of BYU. Sister Holland served as a counselor in the Young Women general presidency. Speaking of “earned empathy” — a phrase coined by the late Elder Neal A. In the past five years alone, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the construction of 133 new houses of the Lord. That’s nearly double the number the faith had in operation (159) in April 2018, when President Russell M. Nelson first announced new temples at general conference. This prolific and unprecedented season of temple announcements has moved Church leaders to consider ways to expedite construction while maintaining the same high-quality craftsmanship. “The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles have often asked the Lord if there are better ways to take the blessings of the temple to His faithful children,” President Nelson has said. “We can’t take five or 10 years to build a temple now and keep up with President Nelson,” added W. Christopher Waddell, First Counselor in the Presiding Bishopric — the group overseeing President Nelson’s temple-building vision. “[We must find] ways to be more productive, to use sacred resources more effectively, to perhaps change the way we do things in some ways. We can’t build the Salt Lake Temple all over the world.” One path being considered for select temples is the modular construction employed by BLOX, a company based in Alabama. BLOX is helping the Church of Jesus Christ pilot a faster way of building temples — beginning with the Helena Montana Temple, which opens to the public on Thursday, May 18, 2023.
