Let’s Talk Bharat | Sunny Deol on the power of Indian cinema
On today’s episode, Anupam Kher is joined by Bollywood star-turned-producer and director Sunny Deol – the eldest son of veteran actor Dharmendra Deol. He made a spectacular Bollywood comeback in 2023 with “Gadar-2,” a period action-drama about the violent fallout of the partition of colonial India in 1947. Deol is known for his larger-than-life on-screen characters and patriotism for his homeland. He is impressed by the realistic portrayals of South Indian films that have struck a chord with their audience. As a one-term member of parliament with the BJP, Deol is ready to bid farewell to politics and concentrate fully on creating engaging cinema that makes his family tradition proud.

Putin awards 100-year-old WWII veteran with Hero of Russia medal
A Russian veteran has been denied his request to join military operations in Ukraine on account of being 100 years old. Ibragim-pasha Sadykov fought for Russia during the Second World War, but still thought he had enough fight in him for another tour of duty, so wrote to the Russian Ministry of Defense, asking to be sent to Ukraine. And when that didn’t work, he went straight to the top.
‘Dear President of the Russian Federation! I am now 100 years and 5 months old, I am still young,’ he said, at a ceremony at the Kremlin. ‘I am a machine gunner, I was on the fronts from 1941 to 1945.’ He detailed how his request was denied: ‘Ibragim-pasha, we take only up to 60 years old, and you are 100+ years old,’ the ministry wrote back.
Russian presidents do not send the centenarians to the front. Instead, Putin decided to award Sadykov the ‘Gold Star’ Hero of the Russian Federation medal for his lifetime of service. Sadykov, a veteran of both Stalingrad and Kursk, had previously been awarded the Order of Glory third and second class, and Order of the Patriotic War first class, Medal ‘For Courage,’ Medal ‘For the Liberation of Warsaw,’ Medal ‘For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945,’ and Medal of Zhukov among his many decorations.

Kim Jong-un to suspend ‘dirty balloon’ retaliation
Kim Jong-un will stop sending his dirty balloons south. The North Korean leader had escalated the ‘balloon wars’ in retaliation for South Korea sending balloons full of propaganda leaflets and K-pop USB sticks northwards, and was continuing to send balloons full of manure and garbage south. This second offensive saw 600 more balloons carrying ‘sincere gifts’ of waste paper, scrap clothing, expired batteries and manure fly south of the border, bringing the total to 3,500 balloons, or 15 tons of waste.
South Korea has dispatched crack teams of dirty balloon disposal experts to cordon off the affected areas, however, the North believe they have succeeded in their goal of letting the South ‘experience how much effort is required’ to remove the propaganda drops. North Korean Defense Minister Kim Kang Il has said they will ‘temporarily halt dropping trash over the border,’ however, they will resume the dirty balloons if South Korea shows any sign of violating the ceasefire (ceaseballoon?).
