Prepare for three days of Okie fun during PiG Fest at Rainbow Valley Ranch in Wellston this September. This multi-day festival will feature performances by prominent Oklahoma artists like singer-songwriter Samantha Crain, Turnpike Troubadour's own Kyle Nix, heavy metal band Locust Grove and rockers Rainbows Are Free.
Wellston, Oklahoma, is a small town located just north of Route 66 in western Lincoln County. The town started in about 1880 when a man named Christian T. Wells established a trading post in the northern part of the Kickapoo Reservation. Several years later, Wells established a post office on September 19, 1884, and served as the first postmaster.
ScotFest is Oklahoma's flagship celebration of Celtic history and heritage. Held in Broken Arrow's Chisholm Trail Park, this weekend-long festival has something for the entire family including food, crafts and excellent live music.
Broken Arrow offers both small-town charm and big-city amenities. Some of Oklahoma's most scenic natural areas surround the community, making it a top spot for outdoor activities, while its cultural attractions draw people seeking arts and entertainment, especially in downtown's Rose District.
The Standing Bear Powwow is hosted by the six north-central tribes of Oklahoma, the powwow features inter-tribal dancing, tiny tot contests, and the crowning of the Standing Bear Princess. There will also be a variety of arts and craft vendors, along with food vendors to satisfy your hunger during all of the festivities.
Ponca City settlers claimed townsite certificates during the Cherokee Outlet Opening, and oil made it into the thriving cultural center it is today. Honor the brave women who settled Oklahoma at the Pioneer Woman Museum & Statue. Tour the Italian "Palace on the Prairie," the Marland Mansion & Estate, built by oil baron and Governor E.W. Marland.
The Canadian River Wine Festival invites all ages out to Lexington for a fun day at the winery. All ages are invited to participate in the annual Grape Stomp Festival festivities.
Lexington Oklahoma flourished between 1907 and 1911 and became the trade center of south Cleveland County. Especially, when in 1911, a new steel bridge was built across the river connecting Lexington and Purcell. In 1890, the population was recorded at 223 people. Now, over 2,200 people call Lexington, OK their home.

Mowdy Ranch in Coalgate, Oklahoma

Today we are discussing the Mowdy Ranch in Coalgate, Oklahoma.
Mowdy Ranch is Oklahoma's only Bureau of Land Management Public Off-Range Pasture for wild mustangs and one of only four such ranches in the United States. Located in the beautiful hills of southeastern Oklahoma, 10 miles northeast of Coalgate on Highway 31, this 4,000 acre ranch is home to nearly 400 wild horses or "mustangs."
Originally known as Liddle and located in the Pushmataha District of the Choctaw Nation, Coalgate, the county seat of Coal County. The town began as a coal-mining camp in 1889 and at its height was shipping almost 30 carloads of coal per day. The town's name was changed from Liddle to Coalgate on January 23, 1890. A popular legend holds that the town was named after Colgate Hoyt, a MK&T director. Apparently, however, the name was taken from the steel gate or "coal gate" that separated the trains from the coal mines north of town.

Is watermelon a fruit or a vegetable?
Today we are discussing the Watermelon Festival in Rush Springs, Oklahoma with Miss Taylor Abbott, the 2022 Watermelon Queen and Mary Hill the chairman of the festival.
The Rush Springs Watermelon Festival is an annual event celebrating the rush of local seasonal watermelons with watermelon-themed activities, carnival rides and family friendly entertainment. The Rush Springs Watermelon Festival has been an annual event since 1948, and has grown to over 20,000 festival-goers each year! The event will feature a seed-spitting contest, an arts and craft fair featuring over 100 vendors, carnival rides, live entertainment, stage shows, on-site food vendors and a classic automotive show.
Rush Springs, OK Rush Springs has a tight knit and welcoming community. The town is best known for their Watermelon Festival and considers itself the Watermelon Capital of the World. During the Great Depression, a Civilian Conservation Corps project was initiated on the east side of Rush Springs to provide employment and improve the region. Young men were paid to construct terraces and ponds and to restore vegetation by replanting trees.
The Rush Springs Lions Club was chartered on July 12, 1932. The Rush Springs Lions Club is a charter chapter of Lions International, the largest service club organization in the world.
The Tulsa Zoo is 85 acres and is located in Mohawk Park. The zoo houses a wealth of wildlife animals including African Lions, penguins, alligators, flamingos, elephants, monkies, bobcats, and much more. Exhibits include the conservation center, Life in the Cold, Life in the Desert, Life in the Forest, Life in the Water, and The Lost Kingdom - to name a few.
Tulsa boasts an impressive amount of art deco architecture that goes toe to toe with the largest cities, a half billion-dollar park ranked best in the U.S. that beckons to be explored by all, a rich history of music that inspired a genre named after the city and so much more.

Are you ready for the rapids?
Today we are discussing the Blue River in Tishamingo, Oklahoma.
Beginning near Connerville in Johnston County, the Blue River flows southeast to the Red River. This spring-fed river has a designated trout area in the Blue River Public Fishing and Hunting Area. Other fishing opportunities exist for black bass, crappie, as well as channel and blue catfish. Camping facilities are available only at the Blue River Campground.
Float trip opportunities by kayak are available on this Class II-III river, offering several falls and ledges, dependent on seasonal waterfall. No commercial outfitters along the river are allowed and public access points are limited. Supplies and information can be found at Scotty's Blue River One Stop, located at the entrance to the public hunting and fishing area. A Blue River Conservation Passport is required of all persons who enter or use the Blue River area, unless exempt. Check with the Oklahoma Wildlife Department for availability and criteria.

Today we are discussing Lake Wister State Park in Wister, Oklahoma. A gateway to the beautiful Ouachita National Forest, Lake Wister State Park in southeast Oklahoma offers five camping areas around the 115 miles of scenic shoreline. This outdoor haven offers park visitors a variety of activities including hiking, camping, biking, boating and water skiing on the 7,300 surface acres of Lake Wister. As an added bonus, the park is also equipped with a water spray park, a popular destination for children and adults alike. Nestled in a ring of pine and oak covered mountains: the Sans Bois, Jackforks, Kiamichis and Ouachitas, lodging facilities at Lake Wister State Park include 15 cabins, RV sites with full hook-ups or some with water and electric only, and tent sites. All RV and tent sites must be reserved online. Book one of the 15 cozy cabins within the park and enjoy lake or park view cabins complete with stone-framed fireplaces and easy access to hiking trails. The park's one or two-bedroom cabins, surrounded by groves of dogwood, wild cherry and northern spruce, accommodate four to six guests and feature one to two queen-size beds in each bedroom with linens, sleeper sofas and a 32-inch flat screen TV. Each cabin also comes complete with kitchen, restroom with shower and air conditioning. Please keep in mind that dishes and cookware are no longer stocked in the cabins. Two cabins have accessible main and bathroom entrances, and pets are welcome to stay in a select number of cabins at the park for a daily pet fee. Lake Wister State Park also offers a fully-equipped group camp that can accommodate up to 100 visitors and includes a full kitchen and dining hall. Lake Wister State Park welcomes wildlife watchers, nature photographers and anyone wishing to escape into the great outdoors. Hunters will enjoy the nearby Wister Wildlife Management Area. A waterfowl area is also located within close proximity to the park. The Poteau River, Oklahoma's only river that flows north, feeds into Lake Wister along with the Fourche Maline and a half dozen or more mountain streams provided fresh cool water perfect for fishing. An abundance of northern bluegill, channel catfish, flathead catfish, white bass, smallmouth and largemouth bass are available for the angler. Facilities at the park include comfort stations with showers, picnic tables, group picnic shelters, lighted boat ramps, an unlighted gravel ramp, playgrounds and a swimming beach. Challenge friends and family to a round of miniature golf at the park's miniature golf course. Hiking trails include a self-guided nature trail and a 6.4-mile hiking trail that takes visitors into the surrounding wilderness to view wildlife such as deer, ducks and rabbits. During the winter months, wintering golden and bald eagles can be seen soaring overhead.
Wister is located in central Leflore County and in the northern portion of the Ouachita National Forest near Lake Wister, US Highways 271 and 270 pass through the town. McAlester is located 55 miles almost due west, and the Oklahoma-Arkansas border lies 20 miles east of Wister. Wister has a population of around 1,100 people within city limits.
