Haunted Garfield County, Oklahoma with Jeff Provine
It’s time for a game of hide-and-shriek!
Today we are discussing Haunted Garfield County, Oklahoma with Jeff Provine.
Garfield County is seemingly a quiet span of rural Oklahoma, but its history is steeped with strange legends. Enid (originally known as "Skeleton" for chilling reasons) has served as the major center since winning out in the violent railroad war of 1894. Early settlers were startled when a mysterious stranger claimed to be John Wilkes Booth in a deathbed confession thirty years after Lincoln's assassination. The intervening decades only added to the county's haunted heritage, from the phantom staff still in the Broadway Tower to the glowing headstone at Imo. Join Jeff Provine and Tammy Wilson in the shadows that stalk the countryside and the spillways beneath town.
Jeff Provine is a Composition professor in Oklahoma. His works include steampunk, alternate history, web comics, and Oklahoma folklore, especially ghost stories.

Chet's Dairy Freeze - Muskogee, Oklahoma
Stick around and you will be saying, “frank you very much”.
Today we are discussing Chet's Dairy Freeze in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
Once the Capital of Indian Territory, Muskogee has played a significant role in Oklahoma and American history. In 1872 Muskogee, OK sprung to life as a railway station for the KATY Railroad. It took no time at all for railroad workers, bridge builders, boarding house owners, homesteaders, and an array of bootleggers and outlaws to make their way here to live and forge the unique community. When the hard times hit during the Great Depression, many moved away. The “Real Okies” stayed.
The migrant agricultural workers from Oklahoma who had been forced to leave during the Depression of the 1930s and who were once thought of in a negative connotation, “Okies” are now typically admired for their grit, creativity with resources, and distinct determination. Okies today are Oklahoma natives who are seen as the tough families and individuals that survived the Dust Bowl and oil bust and either stayed, or moved back, because it was home.
Today the Real Okie spirit can be seen throughout Muskogee and other communities around Oklahoma. We pride ourselves in how we were built, the diverse groups of people that came before us, and the strength and determination that got us to the Muskogee we are today.

Before the town's founding in 1898, there was a dispute over the right to name the town. Local Deputy U.S. Marshall Herbert John Green motioned for the town be named after a Cherokee chief of local significance named Wakita. Green and other local settlers wanted to name the town in the chief's honor because of a protective spell cast by the chief's tribe to protect the area around the town, between Crooked Creek and Pond Creek, from tornadoes for 100 years.
On May 10, 2010, numerous tornadoes touched down in Grant County, causing significant damage near the Wakita area. However, the town itself was not destroyed.
Wakita was the setting of a 1984 television commercial about DuPont's subsidiary Conoco using seismograph technology to search for oil. It was aired during the 1984 World Series. The voice over starts with, "Nothing much changes in Wakita, Oklahoma."

Heavener Runestone - Heavener, Oklahoma
Runestone Park. This dynamic attraction in southeastern Oklahoma is the site of the annual Heavener Runestone Viking Festival, thanks to its unique history.
Opened in 1970, this park is centered on a Swedish-inscribed runestone found in the 1920s. However, according to oral history, the runestone was actually discovered in the 1830s by a Choctaw hunting party. Several ideas have been proposed to explain the origin of the inscriptions. Some claim that the runes document Viking exploration of southeastern Oklahoma in about 1000 A.D., while others suggest the runes were carved in the early 1700s. See the stone for yourself on Poteau Mountain just outside the town's limits.
This 55-acre park also offers group shelters for picnics, picnic tables, outdoor grills, comfort stations, amphitheater, playground, campsites, hiking and educational programs about the Runestone. Be sure to stop by the gift shop and enhance your experience at the interpretative center with educational information.
Located in Le Flore County, Heavener is situated on State Highway 128 and on U.S. Highway 59/270, approximately twelve miles south of Poteau, the county seat. Lying within the former Choctaw Nation, Heavener is named for Joseph H. Heavener, who arrived in 1877. Prior to the town's christening as Heavener, the area was known by several different names, including Prairie of the Tall Grass, Choctaw City, Prairie View, Long Prairie, and Grand Prairie.
Good land drew farmers to the area and assisted in Heavener's growth. In 1885 a cotton gin and gristmill were built, and soon other businesses began moving in. Heavener expanded because of transportation access. After the Kansas City Southern Railway purchased the rail line in 1900, in 1910 the company established a roundhouse, making Heavener a division point. As a result, the town grew. In that year the first bank opened. In 1910 the population was 780, and by 1911 Heavener had two banks, two newspapers, and all of the amenities of a growing city. The population jumped to 1,850 in 1920.
In 1970, when Oklahoma officials dedicated the nearby Heavener Runestone State Park, the population was 2,566.
