Observing Nature

We have lots of hummingbird moths that visit our flowers at home. We were pleasantly surprised to see this one when we were shopping for flowers. We put a little bird seed on the ground in the park, just to see what would happen. The squirrels loved it! We see some really big flocks of geese were we live. This one had several thousand birds in it. We usually see several baby garter snakes each year. This one was out very early in the year. I had an underripe watermelon, so I put it outside. I set up my trail camera to see what would happen.

We feed Hummingbirds and Orioles every summer. We mainly feed jelly to the Orioles, but when they run out of Jelly, they let us know by going to the Hummingbird feeder.

I've always been fascinated by hero and egret rookeries. There were dozens of nests in this one. This nest had a couple of Cattle Egret chicks with one of their parents.

These baby Black Capped Night Heron chicks were getting some size on them, but they were still in their nest. Their nest was part of a rookery, which is a large group of Heron and Egret nests in very close proximity to each other.

Boeseman's Rainbowfish can be an interesting fish to have in your aquarium. They are beautiful, and peaceful for the most part.

We always enjoy seeing Black-necked Stilts when we get the chance. They have a weird habit of jerking their heads forward and back.

While cleaning up some tomato plants, I noticed this Tomato Hornworm crawling on the ground.

Crowned Cranes are unique looking birds. Their hairdo stands out in the bird world. I hope you enjoy seeing these as much as we did.

Nature is cruel sometimes. In this case, one bird is eating another bird. Some birds are predators, and some birds are prey.

We feed grape jelly to the orioles every year. Once in a while, the bees for it and take it over. There was a bunch of them this time.

There used to be a rookery near where we live. I used to enjoy going by to see how the young birds were doing. This video shows some baby egrets in their nests. We put out a little bird seed on the ground in the park to see what would eat it. Lots of birds came to eat, including a pair of Cardinals. There were also lots of other little birds.

We ate our lunch at a local park. Some squirrels helped us eat a few of our fries.

We have box turtles that visit our yard once in a while. This isn't the first time that we've caught them eating cat food out of the cat's food dish.

Every once in a great while I get aphids on my indoor plants. Occasionally I use Ladybugs to get rid of the aphids. These Ladybugs got busy right away making more Ladybugs.

Since I live so far away from the ocean, I've always been fascinated by saltwater fish. In this video, you will see fish, and get a good view of the underside of a ray swimming by.

In this large saltwater tank, there were fish, Horseshoe Crabs, Starfish, small saltwater fish, and a few lobsters and shrimp. In this video, the Horseshoe Crab cruises around among fish, with a starfish at the end.

I shot this video in super slow motion, and I love the way it turned out. In normal speed, you can't really get a feel for how a butterflies wings work. Hope you enjoy seeing it. Thanks for watching!

Usually Great Blue Herons fly when I get anywhere near them with my car. This one didn't seem to mind me driving along on it's fishing trip though. It caught several small fish and ate them while we watched.

As you might have guessed, I really enjoy observing nature. Watching a flock of ducks feed is a simple pleasure that makes life more enjoyable. These ducks couldn't quite reach their food without standing on their heads.

A compost is like heaven for small toads. It has a continuous supply of flies. Both large flies, and small fruit flies. They miss once in a while, but they get plenty to eat.
