Observing Nature

We have quite a few Eurasian collared doves around our house. They often nest in our trees. They usually lay only 2 eggs. The young are ready to fly in about 3 weeks after hatching.

This is a beautiful little butterfly that we don't get to see very often. It's the Common Buckeye Butterfly. This one was on our butterfly bush.

Butterflies have a unique way of getting nectar from flowers. They have a built in straw. They can suck up the nectar with their tube-like tongue called a proboscis.

Cattle Egrets follow cattle so they can eat the insects they scare up. They also sometimes follow tractors for the same reason. A freshly cut alfalfa field is a great place for them to find insects to eat.

Most people thing that a chicken is a chicken, but actually there are lots of different and unique chicken breeds. Here are some of them.

Cattle egrets follow cattle around and eat the insects that the cattle scare up. This video is a perfect example of it. And as a bonus, you get to see a calf nursing from it's mother.

This was the fist time that I had heard a steel drum being played in person. I really loved the sound of it.

Male Peafowl are called Peacocks. Female Peafowl are called Peahens. I've heard the babies called Peachicks. No matter what you call them, the babies are pretty cute, and the parents are beautiful. We get a bunch of these Black Swallowtail Butterflies every summer. They even lay eggs in our garden, and the caterpillars like eating our plants. We've learned to live with them though. We really enjoyed feeding our friend's animals while they were out of town. We especially enjoyed watching the Peacock, Peahen, and Peachicks. The baby Peacocks were only a few days old. I've shared several videos of egrets and herons at a rookery. The breeding plumage of cattle egrets is much more pretty to look at than at any other time.

These babies acted like they were starving to death. The act of feeding itself seemed a little violent.

Nature is so cool to watch. I love watching butterflies and other pollinators on flowers. They seemed to love this carrot flower.

When looking at Crocodile Lizards, you can almost imagine them living in the time of the dinosaur. Another pretty neat thing about them is that they are semi aquatic.

The Old Dutch Capuchine pigeon is a captivating breed of fancy pigeon known for its distinctive head crest and hood. Here are some fascinating facts about these feathered friends: Origins and History: The Old Dutch Capuchine pigeon was developed in its current form in The Netherlands. Interestingly, its deeper origins trace back to India and the Middle East, where Dutch sailors discovered these birds and brought them back to their homeland in the 1500s. This breed is depicted in some Old Dutch Master paintings from the early 16th century, adding to its historical significance. It remained popular in the Low Countries, as seen in paintings by Belgian artist Henri Voordecker. Queen Victoria even gifted a painting titled “Boy and Girl With Their Pigeons in a Loft”, which prominently features Old Dutch Capuchines, to Prince Albert in 1841. Appearance: The Old Dutch Capuchine pigeon is a small to medium-sized bird. Its body is ideally carried horizontally. Key features include: Well-rounded heads that are broad at the back. Medium-length beaks with a slight curve at the tip. Broad, full breasts that protrude beyond the beak when upright. Pearl-white eyes and fine-textured, flesh-to-red cere. Some butterflies are active right up until our first freeze, depending on the weather. In this video, you will see some of the flowers that they utilize.

The Bush Thick-Knee bird is native to Australia. Since they were new to me, I found their way of walking around to be fascinating. I really enjoy seeing deer in the wild. They are such beautiful animals.

One of the simple pleasure in life. Watching a squirrel eat a piece of bread.
