Satoshi Baby (from 2018)
Last year Crypto Brekkie and I recorded and filmed an entire crypto album in the space of the week. It was... creative.
My original upload of "Satoshi Baby" accidentally had broken sound (vocals only in left channel) so here it is again.
Please don't unsubscribe. Just play the whole album on repeat during Christmas dinner. You're welcome.
Merry Christmas.
Listen to album here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjTWjliv_VA&list=PLt3zZ-N423gVWo682EZzhrgAJYVS1yYde
Lyrics:
Satoshi baby, slip a crypto under the tree for me
Been an awful good girl
Satoshi baby, and send me a green candle tonight
Satoshi baby, a 2018 Lambo too, light blue
I'll wait up for you, dear
Satoshi baby, and bring me a green candle tonight
Think of all the Fud I've missed
Think of all the OGs that I haven't kissed
Next year I could be also good
If you'll check off my Christmas list
Satoshi baby, a bull run too, and make it big, for me
Been an angel all year
Satoshi baby, so give me a green candle tonight
Satoshi honey one thing I really do need, the deed
To a bitcoiner mine
Satoshi baby, and bring me a green candle tonight
Satoshi cutie, fill my bags, here’s a smart contract on a dex
Sign your 'x' on the line
Satoshi cutie, and bring me a green candle tonight
Come and trim my Merkle tree
With profits out of reach of the SEC
I really do believe in you
Let's see if you believe in me
Satoshi baby, forgot to mention one little thing, a private key
I don't mean for a door
Satoshi baby, and send me a green candle tonight
Send me a green candle tonight
Hurry, tonight

Taking Back The Internet
The internet is centralized in many ways. DNS is a particularly centralized part of the internet, and we're required to get permission from organizations like ICANN before we're allowed to register certain domains.
How do we take back the internet, and make it permissionless, the way that the internet pioneers in the 90s wanted it to be?
Unstoppable Domains has an idea, and it involves using blockchain technology to decentralize trust.

Wyoming May Save Crypto in America
Caitlin Long is a former member of the Wyoming Blockchain Taskforce who has done tremendous work being a trailblazer for good crypto regulation. Over the past few years Wyoming has turned into a crypto haven, and Caitlin explains why.
Out of the 13 blockchain laws Wyoming has enacted over the past 2 years, one of the most exciting developments is the "Special Purpose Depository Institution" - a 100% reserve bank, that would not require FDIC insurance, would have their own FED Master account, and would allow crypto companies to handle their own wire transfers and not have to rely on other institutions who frequently deny the crypto industry services. More reliable banking relations is a huge win for crypto. But these institutions would also become State Chartered Banks, and there are federal laws that prohibit discrimination against State Chartered Banks in other states. This could potentially override the need for a Bitlicense in order to conduct business in NY for the example.
We will have to see how all of this plays out once people start applying for these licenses, but Wyoming definitely seems to be doing some awesome things for crypto.

US Govt to Ban Encryption? Facebook fights back
On Tuesday, Congress said it intends to passlegislationto regulateencryptionif Silicon Valley doesn’t give the government complete access to everyone’s private communications.
Attorney General William P. Barr demanded that no one should have to right to private communications, and that the government should have access to everything.
Senator Lindsey Graham said: “You’re going to find a way to do this, or we’re going to do this for you ... You’re either the solution or you’re the problem.”
WeChat and Facebook Messenger executives responded to the government letter, saying that a “backdoor” would make their users less safe: “The ‘backdoor’ access you are demanding for law enforcement would be a gift to criminals, hackers and repressive regimes, creating a way for them to enter our systems and leaving every person on our platforms more vulnerable to real-life harm."
Also, end-to-end encryption is the only way that we can have private communication online.
The entire tone of a society changes when people know they’re being surveilled. We self-censor. We conform and live in fear. A surveilled society is a repressed society, and we are dangerously close to having every part of our lives observed.
Facebook has recently begun a transition to a more privacy-focused platform, with Zuckerberg saying “Privacy gives people the freedom to be themselves and connect more naturally, which is why we build social networks.”
Let's hope they succeed, and the government doesn't get in their way.

Fmr HEX dev shares red flags about the project!
This week, Richard Heart's project "HEX". Former HEX developer Kieran Mesquita left the project last December, citing some red flags, and saying it had pivoted from something he was proud to work on to something very different from what it started as.
I chatted with Kieran about his concerns, and appreciated his unique insight as someone with in depth knowledge of the project who actually worked on it.
39:11 Richard Heart crashed the chat, so I invited him on the show to join us. He ended up joining right at the end, so I gave him 5 mins to have the final word. He was asked if he wanted to rebut anything Kieran had said, and to my surprise he said he agreed with it all.
I will leave it up to the audience to make up their own mind about the project!

Using a password manager
Data breaches are getting more common, and passwords are constantly exposed. To make this problem worse, people reuse their passwords across multiple websites, which is a huge danger. The easiest way for hackers to access your accounts is to find a site whose data has been leaked, and then they try using the same password on a bunch of other websites.
Your passwords are only as secure as the sites to which you entrust them. And if any one of those websites gets breached, every single place you’ve used that password or variant thereof is now in danger. That is not a good system.
You should ALWAYS use a unique password everywhere, and a password manager is the best way to get this done, so that you don't have to remember 100 different unique logins.
I go through what to look for in a good password manager, how to create a strong password, and the common mistakes people make.
Guide from Freedom of the Press Foundation about password managers:

Has your phone cam been hacked?
This week Checkmarx released a video exposing a vulnerability in android cameras that allows hackers to use your camera, record your conversations, and find your location, all without you knowing.
I explain how the hack works, and what you can do about it.
Biggest takeaway:
Always update your apps and your phone's OS!
This is part of my ongoing privacy series inspired by Snowden, to teach you about the vulnerabilities in your devices and give you tools to help you live a modern, privacy-conscious lifestyle.
Here is the full video and report of what the checkmarx team discovered:

Stop using banks and start using crypto! But how Private is it?
If we want to take back our financial power, we need to stop using things like banks and credit cards, and start using cryptocurrency. Private online transactions are difficult, and so people are increasingly using privacy coins. But if you want to use non privacy coins like bitcoin and bitcoin cash, tools like coinjoin are great privacy layer that you should add.
In a previous episode I explained how you can use coinjoin with wasabi wallet for btc and electron cash wallet for bch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2Gm5yPFMWY
But unless you’re careful when spending your newly mixed coins, you can undo the privacy that you’ve just created.
The new tool "CashFusion" might make this easier though, and developer Mark Lundeberg walks me through how it works.
It's not enough to just rail against government and companies stealing our data and spying on us: We need to use the tools already around us that are helping to give us back our privacy. Showing our support also encourages other companies to work on solutions in this current surveillance age. CoinFusion will launch soon, and I can't wait to check it out!

Your WiFi is Used to Track You
“A mobile phone is a tracking device that also makes calls.”
I love my phone, but there are risks to carrying one everywhere, and it’s important we understand them. Hopefully this video helps educate you about some aspects of how your device works, so that you can make smart choices that will give you back some of your privacy.
I look at how WiFi probe requests are used to track you, what Snowden and Bunny Huang’s "Introspection engine" is and how it allows you to monitor signals going in and out of your phone, and I share some important tips for making your devices more secure.
Big takeaway: turn off your wifi when you’re not using it!

Is Bitcoin Better Money? Stossel interviews me
Recently I was featured in a Stossel segment about Bitcoin, Libra, and the battle between crypto and governments.
In the video, Peter Schiff and I give our opposing view points of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency. Important things to remember:
Bitcoin can't be debased. There will only ever be 21 million bitcoins.
Unconfiscatable money is one of the most important features we can have in our money.
We shouldn't be supporting or participating in the corrupt and Orwellian financial system -- we should use money that gives us more privacy and control, like cash and cryptocurrency.

Ron Paul: Bitcoin vs Govt, and the coming recession?
I sat down with Dr Ron Paul, fmr Congressman and Presidential candidate, at the Litecoin Summit. This amazing man started a movement that inspired millions to look more closely at our financial system, question central banking, and he has been a strong advocate of competing currencies long before cryptocurrency came on the scene. We chat about Bitcoin, the battle between govt and crypto, and the coming recession that Dr Paul believes is inevitable.

Online Privacy under attack: Can VPNs save us?
“Without encryption, we will lose all privacy. This is our new battleground”
That’s what Snowden said in a Guardian article this week.
The UK, US, and Australia are all actively working to undermine our encryption by forcing back doors and fatal flaws into the encryption that we all use. The Snowden revelations exposed that governments are actively undermining online privacy, and have already cracked many forms of encryption. Australia has basically banned end-to-end encryption, and the white house is talking about it. Governments are forcing private companies to undermine their own encryption.
"This renders all of our public infrastructure and private lives permanently unsafe." says Snowden. It is something we cannot allow.
I explain how VPNs can help give us back online privacy, how they work, which kinds have already been cracked by the NSA and which still seem effective, and what to look for in a good VPN.
Keep in mind, VPNs are not anonymous and are not a fool proof method for privacy. Jeremy Campbell, creator of DNSleaktest.com, said: "Using public VPNs for anonymity is foolish and potentially dangerous, no matter how securely it’s configured, simply because the technology was not designed at all for anonymity. VPN services require that you trust them, which is a property that anonymity systems do not have.”
How safe is your VPN, really?

BSV & ETH
In CoinWatch, I take a deep dive with Edge CEO Paul Puey into the history, tech, and latest news of different coins. This week we look at BSV and ETH.
At Devcon recently, ETH developers continued to talk about their "Ethereum 2.0" solution that is meant to fix the blockchain’s scalability problems.
Meanwhile the BSV "metanet" is being called untenable by many, because of the centralizing effect that the requirements for permanent data storage would create.
Paul dives deep into the tech, roadmaps, and issues for each coin.

Crypto Taxes: the new IRS "guidance"
Recently the IRS issued its first Cryptocurrency Tax Guidance in 5 years. The crypto community has been hoping that this would help clarify taxes around things like hard forks and airdrops, but it seems that confusion persists:
The IRS document reads:
“If your cryptocurrency went through a hard fork, but you did not receive any new cryptocurrency, whether through an airdrop (a distribution of cryptocurrency to multiple taxpayers’ distributed ledger addresses) or some other kind of transfer, you don’t have taxable income.”
Their language here suggests some confusion about the nature of airdrops and hard forks.
Jerry Brito of Coin Center told CoinDesk last week:
“One unfortunate consequence of this guidance is that third parties can now create tax reporting obligations for you by simply forking a network whose coins you own, or foisting on you an unwanted airdrop.”
Crypto Lawyer Sasha Hodder joins me to talk about the guidance issued: none of this is tax advice btw!
We cover things like the IRS' allowance for "first in, first out", which means that you can either identify specific units sold, or use a first in, first out method depending on which is more suitable for your situation. We will also talk about IRS specifically saying it would not create an exemption for transactions below a certain threshold, making day-to-day purchases in crypto difficult.

Snowden: “All your purchases are tracked.” Here’s what you can do.
Inspired by Snowden, here is another video as part of my ongoing series to show you tools to help you live the modern, privacy-conscious lifestyle. Today I’ll be talking about the data harvesting that happens to all of our purchases, and why cash and crypto are essential.
However, Snowden says that the lack of privacy in Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general is an existential threat. And Bitcoin core developer Gregory Maxwell, said:
“Bitcoin is often promoted as a tool for privacy, but the only privacy that exists in Bitcoin comes from pseudonymous addresses which are fragile and easily compromised.”
CoinJoin is a tool that can help. I'll show you how to use CoinJoin in Wasabi wallet to make your Bitcoin transactions more private. CoinJoin can also be used with currencies other than bitcoin, so I'll show you how to use CashShuffle, the BCH implementation of CoinJoin in Electron Cash wallet.
Taking back financial control in our lives is essential.

Snowden's terrifying revelation about NSA surveillance and Smart Appliances
It's chilling to discover how much of your internet activity is monitored. I summarize Snowden's revelation about NSA surveillance and explain how programs like STELLARWIND and TURBULENCE work. I also talk about the dangers of Smart Appliances, and why we should be more careful about our purchasing decisions.
This is part of my ongoing series to help you live the modern, privacy-conscious lifestyle.

The Bitcoin Patreon that cares about privacy
Patreon loves to deplatform people, and payment processors have targeted content creators as well, cutting off services entirely from Patreon-alternatives like Subscribe Star.
By supporting creators with cryptocurrency you bypass payment providers altogether. Flote is a new platform that enables monthly donations for content creators using Bitcoin: I chat to CEO Kingsley Edwards about their new app and the exciting new plans they have to completely decentralize the entire platform.

The battle of Govt v. ICOs: EOS creator settles for $24million, KIK fights SEC
Last week Kik announced it was closing down its app so that it can focus on fighting the SEC in court over the claim that their KIN token was an unregistered security:
"Becoming a security would kill the usability of any cryptocurrency and set a dangerous precedent for the industry. So with the SEC working to characterize almost all cryptocurrencies as securities we made the decision to step forward and fight."
Yesterday it was announced that EOS creator Block. One settled with the SEC and must pay $24 million in penalties for conducting an unregistered securities sale.
“The SEC has simultaneously granted Block.one an important waiver so that Block.one will not be subject to certain ongoing restrictions that would usually apply with settlements of this type.”
Ashe Oro and I discuss these 2 different cases, and what the future might hold for Kin and EOS, and what this means for ICOs in general

Snowden says don't use Wifi, I explain why
Snowden said this week:
"I wouldn't use WiFi at home, because global maps of every wireless access point's unique ID—including yours—are free and constantly updated. I would use ethernet; yes, ethernet on a phone."
Using ethernet on your phone? I explain why you shouldn't turn your wifi router on, and why you shouldn't turn your phone into a hotspot. It's shocking how unsafe it makes your location.

Wigle.net provides an amazing resource for WiFi mapping. They also respect the privacy of anyone who requests their information to be removed from the database. To have records of your access point removed from their database send an email to: WiGLE-admin[at]WiGLE.net (please include BSSID (MAC) in removal requests).
Also, append the tag ‘_nomap’ or ‘_optout’ to your SSID to stop other website tracking your location.

Quantum Computers: Will they break cryptography?
Google just accidentally announced "Quantum Supremacy", and the news has gone wild about fully functional quantum computers just around the corner. I chat to a quantum computing expert Eric Dennis about Google's "Quantum Supremacy". What does this mean for cryptocurrency? Could the cryptography of cryptocurrency be broken? Is the cryptography protecting our daily internet activities still safe? Will quantum computers mean fully predictive climate models and data processing like the media suggests, or are they delusional?

Everything you need to know about Snowden's book "Permanent Record", and why he's being sued for it
Snowden's new book "Permanent Record" is a brilliantly insightful commentary on the state of the world. It's a chilling examination of the current global surveillance apparatus that he helped to build, and a nostalgic look at the early internet and everything that we've lost since then.
I go over my favorite passages, and my biggest takeaways from the book.
Link to book:
Permanent Record - Edward Snowden
https://amzn.to/305negc
Freedom of the Press:
https://freedom.press/
1:17 - why the book is important, Snowden's philosophical view, why we might not want to trust what the government tells us
3:28 - bitcoin, today's crash, DOJ suit will "be good for bitcoin", Snowden's bitcoin usage (more in this interview with Snowden here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDydB3z-6Y0 ), how private is bitcoin?
6:44 - this book will be good for bitcoin, why the govt wants to ban the book, how to donate crypto to Snowden, learning about encryption and privacy techniques at Snowden's organization visit https://freedom.press/
9:22 - encryption is important (for everything, not just money), how the internet functions (different protocols), why you shouldn't use credit cards or bank cards: use cash and hard money
12:52 - First thoughts on book - I went from thinking sovereignty of money was the most important thing we can do as a society, to realizing that maintaining privacy was just as important -- not just for ourselves, but to protect everyone
15:54 - Our superficial understanding of surveillance and how it goes much deeper than we realize. We understand PRISM intellectually since 2013, but the scope of surveillance outlined in this book is mind boggling. Every single phone call, email, photo, conversation had close to a microphone, thing typed on a keyboard (even if never searched for) is recorded and stored FOREVER in a permanent record and this information is accessible and easily searchable by huge numbers of NSA workers who have "the keys to the kingdom" with almost no oversight, and no prosecution for breaking the law and searching our private histories (because to charge these people would be to admit these illegal govt programs exist). Google created an index so this database can be easily searched, pulling up recordings and even screen recordings of your computer/phone.
27:48 - the solution is encryption. "Deleting" things doesn't delete them. Encrypt, don't delete. Rely on yourself, don't rely on a broken system to fix the problem they created.
30:15 - history of the cypherpunks. They knew cryptography was the answer. What happened since? How was the early internet different from today? "To this day, I consider the 1990s online to have been the most pleasant and successful anarchy I've ever experienced."
36:05 - Move from early internet of freedom to current internet where online identity is inextricably linked to real identity. How it creates a more polarized society. How a permanent record hurts children growing up in the digital age, and enforces "fidelity to memory, identarian consistency, and ideological conformity"
43:00 - difference between your country and the state. The deep state is not the underground cabal we expect. We're in the Orwellian nightmare we always dreaded, we just haven't figured it out yet because it's comfortable.
47:50 - We need to face the fact that we're in an Orwellian surveillance state, reject the idea that "it's not that bad" because it's already sinister and going to get progressively worse for our children, and start taking individual responsibility and make informed choices. Snowden's first encounter with "the chain of command" and "proper channels", and how these failed him because our system is broken.
53:33 - Why the system is designed to never allow change, why our democracy currently isn't work, and those in power are disincentivized to change regardless of the opinions of the majority. "Getting its rules changed to serve the interests of the majority would involve persuading the rule makers to put themselves at a purposeful disadvantage ... the people who create the rules have no incentive to act against themselves."

Are Everyone’s Worst Fears About EOS Proving True?
Ashe Oro and I discuss recent concerns about EOS:
Is it too centralized?
Are too many entities that govern the chain in China, what is the risk of Chinese state intervention?
Is the work of developers sustainable, and how can the current funding model be improved?
Ashe and I separate the FUD from the legitimate concerns in this episode. We discuss the real hurdles that EOS is battling, and how the community hopes to overcome them.
