Protest Surveillance: What We Can Learn From Hong Kong
Many protestors fear they will be tracked and targeted for their involvement in the protests. Our cell phones are portable tracking devices that we carry around with us everywhere, and facial recognition software is incredibly advanced these days. While some people are glad the police can track people, because they want those who have been violent or looting to be apprehended, others are concerned. Protesting is a protected right in America, and peaceful protestors should be allowed to exercise their free speech without fear of retaliation.
We don’t know yet how this will turn out, how many protestors will be apprehended, and how many peaceful protestors will be targeted. One place that has protested police brutality and dealt with surveillance and tracking of protestors is Hong Kong. It is one of the most technologically savvy protests we’ve seen: What can we learn from the surveillance and counter-surveillance measures used there?

SpaceX Rocket Launch!
Today the SpaceX rocket, Falcon 9, launched 2 Nasa astronauts into space!
It’s the first time in 9 years that astronauts have been launched from American soil and SpaceX is the first private company ever to fly humans to orbit.
But today wasn’t just another launch. It was the first step of a radical new vision: Commercial space travel.
It's human nature to want to discover and explore new things, and today’s leap towards commercial space exploration was an expression of that on an epic scale.
What do you find most exciting about space? Please let me know in the comments below!

Decentralization and Privacy are more important than ever!
As our lives get further thrust into the digital realm, what we need more than ever is robust digital security to protect the increased activity we’re doing online. Unfortunately we're actually going backwards. Surveillance has become normalized, and people were never given the opportunity to opt in to this increased tracking. This is what Adam Back, Blockstream CEO, said in an interview with me at the Satoshi Roundtable earlier this year.
Unfortunately the internet is not nearly private enough, and not nearly decentralized enough. To help solve this, his company built a Satellite that gives people more privacy for their bitcoin transactions and also helps freedom of speech.
Adam and I discuss how the Satellite works, why it's important, and whether it is possible to take back control of the internet and try to preserve some private space in our digital lives.
Full 1-hr interview with Adam Back available on my "NBTV Members" page.

Economy in Decline: the Crypto Renaissance?
We’re in the midst of an economic collapse.
By March 20 the markets had fallen over 33% from their highs. A huge amount of money has been printed by the FED. There's been trillions in corporate bailouts. Millions are unemployed.
When the economy crashed in 08, people were angry and wanted financial change. Now the economy has crashed again, people are as angry as ever and looking for change once more. But this crash is different from '08, because now we have cryptocurrency: a choice in money.
What are the implications of this?
Crypto devs Amaury Séchet, Chris Pacia, Tobias Ruck, and I chat about the economy, the role of cryptocurrency in the current economic climate, and why decentralized tech is more important than ever.

Video Makers are Moving HERE
In the last few weeks, yet again a bunch of influencers were kicked off their video platforms. This has led many to search for alternatives where their content and their channels are safe and can’t be deleted. One platform that stands out well above many others is LBRY.com, a truly decentralized, peer-to-peer app that doesn’t rely on a central server to store your data.
I discovered LBRY years ago when I covered the platform in a segment for the Stossel Show about the importance of keeping information free.
I chat to CEO Jeremy Kauffman about how LBRY.com works, and why decentralization is important.
If you’d like to see the extended version of the interview where we talk about the secret algorithm and rating system exposed by “reclaim the net” of a major video platform that is shadow banning certain users and promoting others, please head to the members content at NaomiBrockwell.com/memberships
Hot tip to content creators: setting up an account on LBRY.com takes 2 mins, and it’s a great side-revenue stream.

Did COVID19 come from a lab in Wuhan?
Did COVID19 come from a lab in Wuhan?
That’s what a new study called “Project Evidence” explores. It examines evidence that the virus may have been present at a biolab in Wuhan, and was introduced into the greater Wuhan population by an infected lab worker or animal.
What the study doesn’t do is attempt to investigate whether the release was intentional. It also doesn’t attempt to provide concrete conclusions. Instead it encourages the reader to make up their own mind, and hopes to bring more awareness to safety protocols in research labs to give us the best chance of avoiding the next outbreak.
Coming from a lab doesn’t necessarily mean engineered in a lab, or that it is a bioweapon. These are extreme claims, and scientist Trevor Bedford who studies viruses provided a great explanation of why this is unlikely.
I go through all the evidence presented in the study about why the virus might have come from a lab, including missing researchers, coverups, a sensitive cable leaked from US diplomats about the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the mysterious lack of bats present at the market and the data that shows that 34% of initial patients weren’t expose to the Huanan Seafood Market in any way.
And the fact that no epidemiological link was found between the first patient and later cases.
The list of strange occurrences goes on. And although the evidence is all circumstantial, it is interesting to consider. I remain curious and skeptical, but there sure are a lot of coincidences here.

How the world will change after COVID19
What will the future look like post COVID19? Snowden said in an interview this week that right now the system we live under is so stressed that we’re in a position to make not just reformative changes, but revolutionary changes.
Which changes are reasonable to expect and which are wishful thinking? I give my predictions.
Decentralization of the workforce will create a more profound and sweeping change than people realize.
Software and biotech will continue to thrive.
And there will be a tremendous loss of privacy. We’re actually in a precarious position where encryption is threatened, and surveillance tech is taking the front seat. Technology used in the name of contact tracing today will be capabilities that continue to exist for surveillance tomorrow. The intrusion we will allow into our digital lives during this time of crisis will live on long after the crisis has ended. So any policy that demands backdoor access to our devices or data should be categorically shut down. Anonymous tracing is completely feasible, and trying to push for government back doors is irresponsible and will cost lives. The future after COVID may be an exciting decentralized one, or an Orwellian surveillance one. The choice is partly ours, determined by which decisions we allow to be made today.
What about the economy, hygiene, and systematic collapse? I go into my predictions, and would love to know yours. Please write them in the comments!

Coronavirus: The most dangerous moment yet
“The virus will pass, but the decisions we make today … will last” said Edward Snowden in an interview this week.
The long list of bad decisions that led to the current health crisis goes on and on, and as governments around the world scramble to make up for their early mistakes, they’re passing all kinds of policies that have created enormous damage.
There are many heroes who have picked up the slack: those 3d printing face shields, donating computing resources to research facilities, and transforming production plants to make emergency goods.
Tech can be used for tremendous good, but right now as we decide on policies about how to handle this crisis, it’s really important that we remember that tech can also be used for bad. Especially in an atmosphere driven by fear, it’s crucial we remember that “stop gap measures” introduced in emergency situations usually remain in place well after the “emergency” has passed. So we need to be very careful about what kind of a future we’re creating with the measures we take today.
Governments can already track our movements with ease. Knowing this, it’s important that we don’t let a crisis like COVID-19 normalize and legitimize this tracking of citizens. Also we may trust who is using this data now, but someone else will have this data eventually, says Snowden.
“Some other country will have this data eventually. In your country some other president will have this data, and someone will abuse it. … Do we truly believe that after the first wave, the second wave, the 16th wave of the coronavirus is a long-forgotten memory that these capabilities will not be kept? These data sets will not be kept? What is being built is the architecture of oppression.”
Snowden remarked that we are currently at a pivotal moment in time where the system is so stressed that we are in a position to make not just reformative changes to society but revolutionary changes. We can change the structure of the system that controls and influences our lives. What kind of a future do we want to see? Because now is the time to create it.

Hydroxychloroquine: does it work?
Is Hydroxychloroquine the answer to COVID-19?
Last Saturday the FDA gave emergency authorization forhydroxychloroquine, allowing off-label use, and yesterday in a white house briefing Trump said they had stockpiled hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19, and he told people “try it”.
But Hydroxychloroquine is a controversial treatment and its efficacy has not yet been proven. Furthermore there is a long list of seriously dangerous side effects associated with the drug, so using it as a treatment should not be taken lightly. That being said, shouldn’t people have the right to try?
I chatted to Petty Metzger, who used hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin prescribed by a doctor to treat himself when he got the Coronavirus. He describes exactly how he did it, how effective it was, what the studies show, and the risks involved.
Is this the cure we’ve been waiting for?

Economic Turmoil and the rise of Bitcoin and Privacy Coins
Bitcoin was born out of a financial crisis.
For a lot of the people who weren’t there during the early days of bitcoin, it may not be as viscerally real to them why bitcoin created so many impassioned supporters, but Bitcoin was released when there was a huge amount of money being printed by the FED and corporations being bailed out. People were angry, and were so excited to see a money that couldn't be controlled by anyone.
Right now we're in the midst of another financial crisis, and newcomers are experiencing firsthand the conditions that led to the initial, massive grassroots movement around Bitcoin.
It's time for more people to rally around money that exists outside of traditional finance, and we need to rekindle the cypherpunk fervor about privacy, in particular private money. Money is being tracked more than ever before, and privacy plays a more crucial role in money than many realise.
I chatted to Grin developer David Burkett about the beginnings of MimbleWimble, how it compares to other privacy coins, and why private cash is an essential part of a free society.

How US Coronavirus Testing Failed So Badly
The CDC and FDA have really screwed up, more than I could have possibly imagined. It’s a long saga of incompetence, arrogance, and neglect.
First, the CDC decided to make their own test kits rather than using those provided by WHO. The tests didn’t work, leading to a huge delay in the start of testing, an incredible shortage.
But worse, they banned other organizations from making their own tests. So there wasn’t even anyone to pick up the slack.
This response is unforgivable, and has cost many lives and financially ruined millions.
The CDC creates bottlenecks by demanding doctors get permission before administering tests, most test requests are being denied, and they’re not allowing many laboratories that are equipped for testing to carry out this testing: labs all over the country have been trying desperately to get approval from the FDA to use their testing facilities for COVID, and are being denied over and over again because they are not certified as a clinical laboratory under regulations established by the centers for medicare and Medicaid services.
Furthermore the FDA is shutting down all kinds of innovation that would make testing pervasive testing available to all Americans.
Many organizations including the Gates foundations started offering home-testing kits that will allow people who fear they may be infected to swab their noses and send the samples back for analysis, which decreases the risk of exposing infected people to others.
Recently, the FDA banned at home testing, forcing startups who had already collected samples to destroy these samples.
The list of appalling behavior goes on, and banning competition, stifling innovation, and delaying emergency approvals has turned what could have been a manageable outbreak into an uncontrollable disaster that is killing people and financially devastating millions.
My only hope is that health care institutions, biotech startups, and non profits continue to innovate and succeed in going around them as much as possible.

Snowden: Bill to Ban Encryption a "DISGRACE”
Make no mistake, the new “EARN IT” bill will effectively ban encryption.
We should have seen this coming, as key sponsor of the bill Senator Lindsey Graham said just a few months ago that if Apple, Facebook, and other tech companies don’t put backdoors into their devices “We will do it for you. You’re either the solution or the problem.”
On its surface the bill will save sexually abused children by setting up a commission that could dictate best practices for many different kinds of websites.
But the reality is, the Earn it bill isn’t about stopping child porn.
As the Electronic Frontier Foundations said:
“The bill deals with the very serious issue of child exploitation online, but it offers no meaningful solutions. … Rather, the bill’s authors have shrewdly used defending children as the pretense for an attack on our free speech and security online.”
It would give the government an open ended power to control content of apps, blogs, messaging platforms, basically a huge chunk of the internet. It does this by modifying the Communications Decency Act's Section 230.
Section 230 is the most important law protecting free speech online. And threatening to take this essential legal protection away from platforms that didn’t comply with their guidelines is a direct attack on internet free speech.
Furthermore, none of the guidelines have actually been written yet. The Bill gives the commission a blank check to write whatever they want, and those behind the bill have made it very clear that they breaking encryption is at the top of that wish list.
Snowden said "That such a law is even being considered by Congress, is a national disgrace."

Coronavirus: You need to do this NOW
Today the people of San Francisco were ordered to shelter in place, New York was essentially shut down, and Italy saw more deaths in a day than the deadliest day in Wuhan.
Currently there are 181,580 confirmed cases of COVID-19 globally, and 7,138 deaths recorded.
For over a month I’ve been seeing people shame those who are taking precautions, and calling their actions “panic”. From what I’ve seen, almost all of those being accused of “feeding the fear propaganda” aren’t running around with their arms in the air screaming, they are simply advocating taking small steps to limit spread. They are encouraging people to be prepared in advance so that they aren’t out last minute with hordes of others stocking up for social distancing.
These actions were called “panic” a month ago, but now those who had shamed others are the ones taking these precautions. And they’re calling the next level of preparedness “panic”.
And if we get through this because enough people practice social distancing, these shamers will say “see, I told you so, it wasn’t that bad after all”.
But these people are freeriders. As a colleague put in, “Being the last person to finally pick up a bucket and start bailing out the boat isn't something to be proud of, nor is admonishing those who are doing the bailing and then patting yourself on the back when you step ashore well rested unlike the rest.”
The most effective way to fight this so that the rest of the world doesn’t end up like Italy is by avoiding other people as much as possible.
There are about 135000 ventilators in the US, and if we predict 55% of Americans catching COVID, 10 million of them will need ventilators, which could mean 3 million on a single day if all these cases are spread out across the rest of the year. Old people and young people are being hospitalized, and there aren’t enough beds for everyone.
http://www.centerforhealthsecurity.org/our-work/events/2018_clade_x_exercise/pdfs/Clade-X-ventilator-availability-fact-sheet.pdf
https://medium.com/@joschabach/flattening-the-curve-is-a-deadly-delusion-eea324fe9727
What can you do?
Stay home – not everyone has this luxury, so if you can then you should. Protect yourself with social distancing and leave the respirators and beds for those people who don’t have a choice.
If you have to go out, wear a mask and gloves. Yes masks help
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2440799/
Stop making fun of people who are wearing masks or self-isolating. Start doing your part to normalize this activity. You may inspire others to make decisions that could save their lives.
Order things online rather than going out (be aware that the virus survives for days on surfaces depending on the material)
https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.03.09.20033217v1.full.pdf
Find some way to make the most of staying in. Self quarantining doesn’t have to be worse, it can just be different. Remember, Isaac Newton invented calculus when he was quarantined from the plague

“Stop calling it the flu” pleads doctor
Today the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, and Trump banned travel between Europe and the USA.
This week a doctor in Italy wrote a chilling post about what it’s like in hospitals there at the moment. Coronavirus moved slowly at first and then suddenly it overwhelmed hospitals in the blink of an eye. There aren’t enough beds. People are treated in the hallways and some people aren’t be treated at all. Doctors in Italy currently have to choose who to treat depending on their chance of survival. Doctors and nurses there no longer have shifts or schedules or departments: it’s just all hands on deck treating corona patient after corona patient. These medical practitioners have been isolated for months, and have been weeks without seeing their families. Many break down from exhaustion, some have died.
Yet despite testimonials like this from medical practitioners all over the world, people still have their heads in the sand and say “it’s no worse than the flu”.
As the Italian doctor said, “tell me which flu virus causes such a rapid tragedy … Let's stop saying it's a bad flu”
The only way to help the situation is to make sure that we slow the spread of the virus to a level where medical facilities can keep up. That means keeping as many people home as possible, The sooner you self-quarantine, the more lives you’ll save.
Some people are upset because their holiday has been ruined, or their workout routine interrupted. But doctors around the world are pleading: “Try to have mercy on that myriad of older people you could exterminate. It is not your fault, I know. It is the fault of those who put it in your head that you are exaggerating. And even this testimony may seem just an exaggeration for those who are far from the epidemic, but please, listen to us, try to leave the house only to indispensable things.”

Everything you need to know about Coronavirus
Should we be freaking out about Coronavirus?
Today in a press conference, Trump said no, everything is fine, live your life as normal, don't change your routine.
Is this irresponsible advice?
Coronavirus, (“COVID-19”) is a highly contagious virus that kills about 2% of people. But the most dangerous part about the virus is that therate of new cases is increasing exponentially across the world with no sign of slowing down.
Until there's a cure or vaccine, we should absolutely be changing our routine to minimize contact with others, to slow the spread of the virus, because it's so contagious. Many companies in San Francisco are already encouraging their employees to work from home if they can, due to an expected outbreak there. Officials say “There’s almost assuredly going to be a significant number of people testing positive” in California, due to a woman being left undiagnosed there with the virus for weeks.
For 80% of people who contract the coronavirus they just have symptoms of a common cold or the flu. Doesn’t seem so bad. But 20% get a more serious infection, and end up in ICU on oxygen support. Older people and those with other ailments are at a higher risk, so most younger people will be fine.Buthospitals all over the world are already overburdened. We can expect this situation to worsen, so this is not a time to get sick with anything, not just Coronavirus.
In this video I talk about the numbers we've seen so far, what coronavirus is, and what we can be doing to protect ourselves.
But the main takeaway:Stay safe, and try to avoid contact with others!
Huge thank you to Perry Metzger for his works of wisdom at the end of the video

What happened to Warren Buffett's Bitcoin?!
Today Warren Buffett told CNBC that he didn't own Bitcoin or any cryptocurrency... So what happened to the Bitcoin and Tron that Justin Sun gave him at their lunch? Either the Oracle of Omaha wasn't being entirely honest, or he's quite confused, because inbuilt to the 2 Samsung Fold phones gifted to him by Sun are wallets containing crypto.
There were some other strange things mentioned during the interview that I point out. Let's not forget that this man is in fact a Wall Street Shark, so it's probably good not to underestimate him and presume confusion. But then again, given how he was talking about Bitcoin during the interview, maybe there's more confusion there than I realized...
And Justin Sun has since confirmed that Buffett still has the crypto he gifted him :)

Crypto funding crisis: Are some coins destined to die?
Is BCH going to be the next in a line of coins that die from lack of care? There seems to be a funding crisis, but this isn’t an issue that’s just affecting Bitcoin Cash. We see it across the crypto space and in the open source world at large. In crypto we’ve seen different projects experimenting with all different funding solutions. What can we learn from those that have succeeded and failed?

Many projects just rely on developers donating their time voluntarily. But if you’re just asking a developer to volunteer their time, you’re actually asking them to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Actual money doesn’t change hands, but the reality is there’s a HUGE opportunity cost for these developers to give their time to a project.
By comparison, it has been very beneficial for projects like Zcash to have a founders' reward. Zcash community members like Minezcash remark that the founders reward was absolutely necessary to get Zcash off the ground, but the sunsetting was the best part of it: it allowed the community to evaluate the project down the track and potentially change direction if needed.
Meanwhile Dash has a successful Dao that is operational and distributes earmarked funds according to community consensus.
Recently a new funding plan was proposed for BCH: the CEO of one of the largest mining pools on Bitcoin Cash released a proposal to use 12.5% of BCH miner rewards to support Bitcoin Cash infrastructure. This would sunset after 6 months, and would go towards critical infrastructure development, and the idea is that this development needs to be done now because they anticipate an upcoming bull market and want to make sure the chain is ready. In order to make sure the whole community does this and there’s no tragedy of the commons, miners will orphan BCH blocks that do not follow the plan.
The plan was received largely with hostility in the West and with support in the East, but it has kickstarted a lot of conversation about alternative funding plans, and this discussion is critical for BCH.
I personally think that we might see the coins with inbuilt funding models outcompete other coins that aren’t large enough to attract an open source stakeholder model. But whichever direction the community chooses, it’s important they do come together and choose. Cohesion is needed around a plan for BCH sustainability, otherwise we may see a sunset on BCH also.

Dev Funding Crisis: BCH vs other cryptos, how to sustain decentralized systems
At Anarchapulco Chris Pacia (lead developer of Open Bazaar) and I had a fireside chat about the current funding crisis in BCH, how to make decentralized projects sustainable, and how different cryptocurrencies are approaching this issue. We look at the experimentation in the space, what we can learn from other coins, and what we can learn from the non-profit and open-source communities.

What REALLY happened at the Warren Buffett & Justin Sun lunch?
Justin Sun placed the winning charity bid for a lunch with Warren Buffett: $4.5 MILLION dollars. Every major media outlet in the country was talking about it and about bitcoin, which was an incredible publicity coup. Then a few weeks ago the lunch finally took place, so I sat down for an exclusive interview with Justin Sun at the Satoshi Roundtable to answer my 4.5 million questions:
Did they eat gilded caviar?
Was there juicy gossip?
Does Buffett still think Bitcoin is rat poison squared and a "delusion"?
Was it a buffet with Buffett?
All of these questions were answered, plus I got the low-down on how Buffett really feels about Bitcoin. I also talk about what really happens at the Satoshi Roundtable each year, an event that is often shrouded in mystery but is hands down the best event that I attend each year.

What they WON'T tell you about the Hong Kong protests
I visited Hong Kong to find out what is actually going on there with the protests. The Hong Kong government says the protests are violent riots. Many media outlets say that the Hong Kong protestors are the most polite in the world. I decided to visit myself, chat to locals about how they feel about the protests, and take a look at the cryptocurrency scene there.
Thank you to cliffc2 who provided a lot of the protest footage.
HUGE thank you to Leo and the Hong Kong Bitcoin Association for their help.

Exclusive with Kraken CEO: The Fight for Financial Freedom
Jesse Powell, CEO and Co-Founder of Kraken, chatted with me about how he started Kraken, how crypto can change the world, and regulatory compliance vs. the right to financial privacy.
Kraken is one of the largest and oldest Bitcoin exchanges in the world, and has been on the forefront of the blockchain revolution since 2011. They've been an important part of the fight for financial freedom and inclusion.

Privacy Coins and Government Bans
Reuben Yap, COO of Zcoin, joins me to chat about privacy coins, and how to achieve financial privacy.
Is privacy possible for Bitcoin?
Can privacy coins help the privacy of Bitcoin?
How does Dandelion Protocol compare to Gossip Protocol?
We also discuss the FATF travel rule and privacy coins being banned from exchanges.

Fungibility vs Censorability
Recently there was a vulnerability related to Zerocoin protocol, which came about after this interview was filmed, so it's helpful to elaborate on its relationship to Zcoin:
Zcoin currently uses the Sigma protocol, developed to improve scalability and remove trusted setup from the original Zerocoin protocol (not to be confused with the Zerocash protocol used in Zcash).
In April 2019, while already in the progress of migrating to Sigma, a cryptographic flaw was found in Zerocoin (https://zcoin.io/further-disclosure-on-zerocoin-vulnerability/) so the Zcash team decided to replace it completely with Sigma, which went live on mainnet in July 2019.
Zcoin is currently is set to release Lelantus, its next gen privacy protocol in 2020. Lelantus builds on the Sigma protocol and improves privacy by removing the need for fixed denominations and also allowing direct anonymous transfers. https://zcoin.io/direct-untraceable-anonymous-lelantus/
Huge thank you to BitPay who sponsored this interview! They provide awesome services like helping businesses accept crypto, and helping individuals pay with crypto even at places that don't accept crypto! Check out their website:
