Batya Ungar-Sargon on how journalism went woke
How did media and journalism become the domain of the elite? Why does liberal media only represent the ideologies, politics, and narratives of a tiny fraction of the population? What happened to reporting for the masses?
I spoke with Batya Ungar-Sargon — deputy opinion editor at Newsweek and author of the book you all must read immediately, "Bad News: How Woke Media Is Undermining Democracy" — about these issues and more.

Kevin Bardosh on the consequences of Covid policy in Canada
Despite the fact most have moved on (or have attempted to, in any case) from Covid fear, things like vaccine mandates, the ArriveCan app, quarantines, and fines for those who fail to follow Canada's ongoing Covid protocols remain. Moreover, Trudeau's Liberal government has yet to acknowledge the enormous harms done by Covid lockdowns and associated policies, including vaccine mandates and bans on gathering, protests, and travel.
Kevin Bardosh is a social scientist, affiliate assistant professor at the University of Washington’s School of Public Health, and lead author of a paper published in February, called, “The Unintended Consequences of COVID-19 Vaccine Policy: Why mandates, passports, and segregated lockdowns may cause more harm than good.” The paper looks at unintended consequences of COVID policy in the areas of behavioural psychology, political and legal effects, socioeconomics, and the integrity of science and public health.
I spoke with him about what he found in his research and how COVID vaccine policies and lockdown measures may in fact have been counterproductive and damaging to public health.

Canada's road to Beijing — John Carpay on the Trudeau government's move towards a digital ID
John Carpay is the founder and president of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF). I spoke with him this week about the ongoing enforcement of the ArriveCan app on those entering Canada, the Trudeau government's plan to introduce a "digital ID," and the potential for this to lead to a China-style social credit system.

Is the homelessness problem really about a lack of housing?
We talk about homelessness in North American cities, but is the resolution really in providing more housing? Or are we just avoiding the real problem? I spoke with Jared Klickstein, who was an addict for many years, ending up on Skid Row — in and out of jail and the hospital before finally getting clean. He recently wrote an article for Public called, "The Secret to Ending Homelessness."

Robin Dunbar on friends—the cure for all that ails us
Friends are fun, but they bring much more to our lives than just company. In his book, "Friends: Understanding the Power of our Most Important Relationships," Robin Dunbar explains why, beyond mental health benefits, friends, more than anything else, offer longer, healthier lives. (And no, online friends don't count.)
Robin is an anthropologist, evolutionary psychologist, head of the Social and Evolutionary Neuroscience Research Group at the University of Oxford and an author. I spoke with him about friends: why we need them, how we make them, what the magic number of friends is, and what to do if we find ourselves lacking.

An ex-john opens up about buying sex and why he became an advocate against the sex trade
Gene McConnell is an ex-john. At one time in his life, he had a porn addiction, was paying for sex regularly (while married), and even attempted to sexually assault a woman. Gene stopped himself, but the near-attempt and consequent arrest forced him down another path, towards dealing with his past trauma and related sex, anger, and emotional issues, as well as towards a life of talking to other men about his past, how he changed his life, and what was at the root of his exploitative behaviour and dehumanizing view of women.
Today, he tours college campuses, speaking to young men about pornography and prostitution, is the founder of Authentic Relationships International, is a youth pastor, and is married with three children.
I found Gene through a documentary film produced by Exodus Cry called Buying Her. He is featured in the film among a number of ex-johns who speak candidly about what they did to women in the sex trade, why, and how it impacted their life and the lives of others.

The Same Drugs: The thought police are here for Harry Miller
Harry Miller is a former police officer from Humberside who was investigated by the police in 2020 over tweets. Although the officer who contacted him confirmed no crime was committed, one of the tweets, which included a poem Harry did not write, was recorded as a hate incident.
In February 2020, he won a landmark ruling against Humberside Police in the High Court. In his judgement, Mr Justice Knowles said that Harry's tweets were “not even in the foothills of harassment,” and compared Humberside Police’s actions to the Cheka, Stasi and Gestapo.
Knowles however found in favour of the College of Policing, ruling that its Hate Crime Operational Guidance (HCOG) was lawful. Miller is now appealing this element of the judgement on the basis that HCOG is not compatible with existing legislation, including the Equality Act and the European Convention on Human Rights.
Harry is taking his battle for free speech and against police harassment to the Court of Appeal, which will hear his case on March 8-10.

The Same Drugs: Matt Taibbi wants a better media channel for a less polarized America

I apologize for my terrible, echo-y audio (luckily Matt's is good and he is the important one). I'm still working on my tech setup in my new digs, and obviously got it wrong this time around. I promise it will return to better quality. For those nosy parkering, my dog and I abandoned Vancouver for Mexico. No! Find out why.
Join myself, Isabella Malbin, and K. The Same Drugs: Trans activists want to force BC courts to adopt "preferred pronouns"
In December, the Chief Justice of the B.C. Supreme Court and B.C. Provincial Court issued a practice directive advising lawyers and the public that all parties appearing in court would be asked to specify what pronouns they use. The BC bar was not asked for input, rather, this was a decision pushed for by a group of activists belonging to the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee (SOGIC) section of the Canadian Bar Association, B.C. Branch. Essentially, gender ideology was being adopted in what is meant to be a neutral setting, not a political one —the court. How this could impact cases dealing with gender identity and parental rights is troubling, considering recent cases wherein parents opposed the transitioning of their kids.
Shahdin Farsai, an Iranian-Canadian lawyer practicing in British Columbia, spoke out, expressing concerns about compelled speech and how such a policy might impact a client’s legal interests. Her article discussing these concerns was accepted by the Advocate, a B.C.-based magazine, but subsequently pulled after SOGIC members threatened legal action as well as the magazine's funding. Canadian Lawyer then published a condensed version, which was also removed after a SOGIC mob campaign.
I spoke with Shahdin recently about her arguments and experiences attempting to stand up to trans activists in the legal industry.

Justin Trudeau invokes the Emergency Act in an attempt to curtail democracy — what does this mean?
I spoke with Jay Cameron, a lawyer with the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF), yesterday, just after Prime Minister Trudeau announced he would be invoking the Emergencies Act in an effort to stop the legal protests happening in opposition to Covid-related mandates and restrictions.
The Justice Centre is representing the Freedom Convoy 2022 in Ottawa and has a team of lawyers on the ground providing legal assistance and advice:

The Same Drugs: Jeanna Hoch is a stripper who found radical feminism
Jeanna Hoch is a cannabis activist, the owner of Canna Mama Clinic, a feminist, and has worked in strip clubs for about 20 years. She encountered controversy in her cannabis work, then again when she began speaking out about gender identity ideology, finding radical feminism in the process. Unfortunately, she wasn't received well by some radical feminists online, who felt her work and views on her job at a strip club were in conflict with their goals of female liberation.
I spoke with her about her views on the sex industry, her experiences working in strip clubs, how she feels about men who frequent strip clubs, and how she has been received by radical feminists.

The Same Drugs: Richie Hardcore on porn, masculinity, Muay Thai, and becoming a better person
Richie Hardcore is a Muay Thai coach, personal trainer, and public speaker. He is also one of my favorite people! Richie spends much of his life trying help others improve their lives: he's spent time as a community worker in drug and alcohol harm reduction, is a campaigner against domestic and sexual violence, and a sexual consent educator. Richie is passionate about helping to overturn this country’s mental health statistics.
I spoke with him recently about how to engage men and boys in critical conversations about porn; the impact of porn consumption on youth, how porn impacts our relationships and intimacy, as well as how Muay Thai has changed his live and the lives of others.

The Same Drugs: Do Trudeau's new travel restrictions violate the Charter?
Hello friends! I am still out of the country, and therefore not in my home and in a less than ideal set up, tech/audio/visual-wise, so while I am doing my best to improve on sound/set up, I am still working on things. Thank you for bearing with me! Please ignore my messy clothes shelf in the background of my Air BnB.
On Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new travel restrictions in Canada, including forcing Canadians returning home to quarantine in a government-designated hotel, on their own dime, which Trudeau promises will cost at least $2000.
This is despite the fact that international travel accounts for just two per cent of COVID-19 cases in Canada.
https://globalnews.ca/news/7607191/covid-canada-international-travel-restrictions/
The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) is fighting back, having already mounted a number of challenges in response to Covid-related restrictions, and recently announced that immediate legal action is being prepared against the Trudeau government over the declaration that Canadian residents will be subjected to mandatory quarantine, at their own expense, after returning from international travel, regardless of their negative COVID status: https://www.jccf.ca/federal-government-faces-imminent-lawsuit-over-unlawful-confinement-of-returning-canadian-travelers/
I spoke with Lisa Bildy on Sunday about The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the lockdown measures across Canada, and Trudeau's travel restrictions.
Lisa Bildy graduated from Western Law school in 1993, and was called to the Ontario bar in 1995. She practiced for a number of years with a small litigation firm, where she did considerable trial work primarily in the areas of family and personal injury law. Lisa has worked with the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms since 2019.
