Friday Night Frenzy! Recapping This Week In Law!
This week's developments in the Girardi bankruptcy case were officially too much to handle, and somehow ya'll were able to convince me to watch an episode of RHOBH (seriously, my brain hurts). That said...some of the quotes: "if you can help the victims, then why wouldn't you give up the earrings" ... "clearly her position is that she is also a victim...but, the things that you're wearing, the things that you own is an ill-gotten gain"... YEAAAAA - we're gonna talk about that.
If any of ya'll have tuned into these evening streams, you know the topics can go anywhere and everywhere...you know how I love "linear" thought processes! This is intended as a casual and fun way to let some steam off after a long week.

Friday Night Frenzy! Recapping This Week In Law! (How Is It Already September?!?!)
Ok, so we've got TOM GIRARDI wiring money from the client trust account to help his mistress (also a sitting judge) buy a beachfront condo (oh, plus ERICA GIRARDI earrings set for auction); ALEC BALDWIN getting smacked with another defamation lawsuit brought by a Gold Star family for some not-so-kind public statements; and Orange County Judge ousting city council members after those members, you know, just decided their terms should be longer...; and I'm sure something else crazy happened that I completely missed! UPDATE - it appears we've also gotta discuss attorney shenanigans in the Manson cases, and I mayyyyy have a fun update on our favorite internet/social media chef...
Also - HOW IS IT ALREADY SEPTEMBER?!?!?!
It's been another wild week in the law, so let's recap some of the happenings in significant cases and try to have a laugh along the way. Joined by @Runkle Of The Bailey, @Uncivil Law, and @Boss Attorney Bri!

Trials of the Century (Ep. 11): Sacco and Vanzetti
On April 15, 1920, a shoe factory paymaster (F.A. Parmenter) and his guard (A. Berardelli) were murdered and the $15,000 in payroll they were carrying was stolen. Three weeks later, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, Italian immigrants to the United States in 1908, were arrested and charged with the murders.
Sacco (shoemaker) and Vanzetti (fish monger) were both avowed anarchists, who advocated the violent overthrow of the government and all political, economic, and religious institutions. Their trial began on May 31, 1921, before Judge Webster Thayer of the Massachusetts Superior Court. After 55 prosecution witnesses, 99 defense witnesses, alibi witnesses, a hat that didn't fit, suspect bullet tool mark analysis, and a rather opinionated Judge, Sacco and Vanzetti were found guilty on July 14, 1921 and sentenced to death by electrocution.
Regardless of whether you believe either man was guilty of the underlying offense, they most certainly didn't receive a fair trial or appeals process. This week I'll be joined by @Runkle Of The Bailey and @Scott Cardinal - Investigative Historian we discuss yet another Trial of the Century!

Patrick Reed sues Golf Channel! Tiger Woods Subpoenaed for Deposition! WTF IS HAPPENING IN GOLF?!?!
Patrick Reed filed a $750 million defamation lawsuit against Brandel Chamblee & Golf Channel last week that's been hitting the news cycle. While researching that case, I came across a separate case filed by Reed's attorney against the PGA and, just today, a Notice of Deposition was issued seeking to compel Tiger Woods to sit for a deposition in September. What I thought was a relatively simple defamation case just got a whole lot more interesting! Let's discuss.

Trials of the Century: The McDonald's Coffee Case - Scalding Coffee & Resulting Media Smear Campaign
Frivolous lawsuit for money, or a devastating injury that got dismissed as frivolous in the wake of a relentless media campaign??? This week we cover one of the most controversial civil trials in American jurisprudence, the coffee cup that was so hot it burned one of the world's largest fast-food brands (hint - "Old ___________ had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.... ...with a bs settlement offer here, and a media slander campaign there, E-I-E-I-O")...
I'm sure ya'll will be shocked that much of the reporting around this incident and the resulting trial is, generously stated, a little of the mark. Let's discuss what actually happened, from Stella Liebeck ordering that fateful coffee to the trial that shook the food and beverage industry.
This week I'll be joined by @Runkle Of The Bailey and @Scott Cardinal - Investigative Historian as we discuss yet another Trial of the Century! Special guest appearance, and theatrical reading, by @Good Lawgic.

DEAR MEDIA, PLEASE STOP PUTTING WORDS IN MY MOUTH!
Thanks to the efforts of @aburkhartlaw and the generosity of many others, 6,600 pages of recently unsealed documents in the Depp v. Heard trial were made public and distributed far and wide (again, thanks to the effort of Andrea Burkhart). Instead of taking a careful look through (again, I repeat) more than 6,000 pages of motions, responses, objections, exhibits, e-mails, etc., several in the media have tried to ascribe their own perceived motivations on those who sought the release of these documents.
This rush to print caused some rather obvious blunders in the reporting, to include articles in The Daily Beast, NBC, and Newsweek. Some of you might have seen that I asked the author of one of these articles about the misreported information on Twitter. Rather than respond to the substance of my question, said author and Senior Entertainment Editor decided he'd make an attempt at doxing my Twitter account as "just another bot" because the account was created after May of 2022 (for fairly obvious and previously discussed reasons). Well, that didn't sit right with me so I'm going to have a little chat with all of you about the whole mess...

Just Build Something! How to Make a Resin Art Lazy Susan (start-to-finish) - It's Easy, I Promise!!!
Welcome to the DIY and fun side of Law & Lumber!
If you're looking for a break from the daily news (who isn't?!?!?!), or a fun project to do with your family, here's a quick breakdown (start-to-finish) of how to take a $10 piece of wood from your local hardware store and turn it into the centerpiece of your kitchen. A funny thing about this resin art, it's impossible to make two of the exact same kind...so every single one that gets made is 100% original! In this video I take you step-by-step through making you're own custom centerpiece lazy susan by ASSISTING a friend (@Good Lawgic) in making one himself. If I can show Joe how to make one, it's definitely worth a try on your own!
Now, this was my first attempt at stitching something like this together for a video, so please be gentle, but I would also love to hear your thoughts in the comments. ALSO - if you have any questions, please ask them in the comments (believe it, or not - I do read and respond as much as I can). I also want to see all your finished pieces, so if you do upload them to Instagram, be sure to tag me (link below). I'll also post affiliate links to some of the products I used to make this particular piece. Thank you all for following along and please do enjoy!
Life is too short, so just get out there and go build something - trust me, you'll feel better!

Trials of the Century: The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes ("The Scopes Monkey Trial")
On July 10, 1925, in the small town of Dayton, Tennessee in the midst of an unseasonably and oppressively hot summer, a high school teacher by the name of John Thomas Scopes took his seat as the defendant in a case brought by the State of Tennessee. Scopes would later explain his role in the trial as having "furnished the body that was needed to sit in the defendant's chair." Over the next 8 days the small town of Dayton played host to what is now referred to as The Scopes Monkey Trial that pitched two of the nation's best attorneys against one another in a match fit for the gods of summer.
This week @Scott Cardinal - Investigative Historian and I will walk you through one of the most sensational trial this country has ever seen, one that's been covered by plays, movies, books, etc. - and guess what, a lot of these theatrical recounts of the trial get a lot wrong! Let's talk about what really happened the summer, which culminated in a conviction of John Thomas Scopes on July 21, 1925. Special guest appearance, and theatrical reading, by @Good Lawgic

Trials of the Century: The Trial of Lizzie Borden
The axe murders that shook Fall River, Massachusetts in the summer of 1892, the trial in the New Bedford Courthouse in 1893, and the infamous children's rhyme that stemmed therefrom:
"Lizzie Borden took an ax
And gave her mother forty whacks,
And when she saw what she had done,
She gave her father forty-one."
Welcome to Episode 2 of this Trials of the Century series where I'm again joined by @Scott Cardinal - Investigative Historian
to discuss the Falls River murders and Lizzie Borden's acquittal at trial! We might even have another special guest to join in the discussion...oh, and perhaps also a demonstration to please the viewing audience!

Trials of the Century: Lindbergh Kidnapping and the trial of Bruno Hauptmann
Well, several of you asked, and here it is - tonight I'm going to kick off a new series where we discuss some notable "trials of the century", and what better place to begin than with the Lindbergh Kidnapping and the trial of Bruno Hauptmann! I thought long and hard about releasing this as a pre-recorded video but wanted to give the chance for anyone in the chat to ask questions or add commentary along the way.
Also, as a special treat, for this episode I'll be joined by Investigative Historian @Scott Cardinal - Investigative Historian! Together we'll try to lay context to what was one of the biggest news stories, investigations (fraught with conspiracy theories galore), and trials of the modern era!

MOTION TO RECONSIDER?!?! Is it possible & what does it mean - let's answer some questions!
I've gotten a flood of questions since Amber Heard's legal team filed a Notice of Filing, advising that several transcripts are being filed in the trial court (some of which are being filed "under seal"). Attempting to explain the likely implications of this filing via Twitter is nearly impossible, so we're going to do a live stream to break down what I think this means and where we go from here! After the live stream, I'll head over and @Uncivil Law as we discuss how a possible appeal would play out in Virginia!
Thanks to @Good Lawgic for stopping in to help with the discussion.

Judgment for Depp: Can Heard Discharge the Judgment in Bankruptcy?!?! Bankruptcy Lawyer Explains
The Jury Has Spoken! Judgment was entered in favor of Johnny Depp in the amount of $10 million in compensatory damages + $5 million in punitive damages (reduced to statutory maximum of $350,000). The question is being asked: "Is this judgment dischargeable if Heard files for bankruptcy relief?" Let's discuss!

Some added context/background: Johnny Depp sued Amber Heard for defamation (seeking $50 million) based on statements Heard made in an op-ed in the Washington Post in December of 2018. Heard has countersued Depp for defamation (seeking $100 million) for statements attributed to Depp describing Heard's op-ed and subsequent actions a hoax to gain notoriety. The case was brought in the Circuit Court for Fairfax County, Virginia, which was found to be the appropriate venue because the Washington Post (publisher of the op-ed) is incorporated in Fairfax County.
Chief Judge, Penny Azcarate is presiding over the matter. Depp is represented by Benjamin Chew, Camille Vasquez, and other members of the law firm of Brown Rudnick LLP. Heard is represented by Elaine Bredehoft, Benjamin Rottenborn, and other members of the law firm of Woods Rogers PLC.

Woodworker Attorney DEBUNKS Amber Heard's "Broken Bed” Testimony!
Follow along as we walk through a small but important piece of Amber Heard's testimony regarding the alleged December 15, 2015 incident that took place in the couple's L.A. penthouse condo: the bed that Johnny Depp broke/splintered!
Just FYI - this is my first YouTube video and I know it could use some improvement, but hey - it's a process, right?!?!
