Israel Hamas War: IDF destroy hundreds of kilometers of Hamas tunnels beneath Gaza
#israel #israelhamaswar
THE IDF has destroyed hundreds of kilometers of Hamas tunnels beneath Gaza.
Hamas used more than 6,000 tons of concrete and 1,800 tons of steel for the hundreds of kilometers of tunnels beneath the Gaza Strip, the IDF says, citing new intelligence.
The IDF says information recovered by troops in Gaza, along with the hundreds of underground passages that have been investigated so far, indicate that Hamas invested tens of millions of dollars in its tunnels project.

War between China and Taiwan could explode over 'one misunderstanding' say General Richard Barrons
#taiwan #china #worldnews
WAR between China, Taiwan and the US could explode over one small "mistake" and result in a chilling new world order, experts warned.
Taiwan is bracing for its eighth presidential election - weeks after Xi delivered a chilling New Year message insisting "reunification of the motherland is inevitable".
China regards the island as part of its territory - and has vowed to take the nation by force if necessary, carrying out ever more regular invasion rehearsals.
Taiwan insists it is an independent nation after splitting from mainland China in 1949.
Away from the conflict in Europe, the eyes of the world are nervously watching the boiling tensions between the two nations in East Asia.
As Taiwan's voters head to the polls on Saturday, the looming threat of war is likely to be at the forefront of their minds.

Police smash windows to save family after car crashed in pond
#illinois #carcrash #naperville
Police smashed the windows of a car to rescue a family who had crashed their vehicle into a pond in Naperville, Illinois, on January 2, recently released bodycam footage shows.
The Naperville Police Department posted the footage on January 10 from two of the three officers that entered the frigid water.
One officer can be seen breaking the window of the white SUV, before another jumps in to help the family leave the vehicle. The family are seen being led by officers across the pond to the safety of the bank.
WGNTV reported that a man, woman, and two-year-old child were rescued.
Police said a preliminary investigation suggested that the accident happened when the driver mistook the gas for the brake pedal and drove into the water.

Thousands march through Warsaw in protest against arrest of ex-ministers
#warsaw #poland
Thousands of opposition supporters gathered outside Poland's parliament on Thursday (January 11) to protest against the new government's changes to state media and the imprisonment of two former ministers convicted of abuse of power.
The march reflects mounting tensions in the country as the new pro-European Union coalition government led by Donald Tusk tries to undo the policies of the previous nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party administration.
A sea of red and white Polish flags stretched back from the parliament, interspersed with placards with slogans such as "Freedom of speech". Protesters also chanted "Free media!"
The demonstration came as President Andrzej Duda, a PiS ally, said on Thursday he had started proceedings to pardon the two ministers in the last government who were jailed this week for abuse of power, escalating his stand-off with the new government.
State-run news agency PAP cited Warsaw city hall as putting the number of people in the crowd at around 35,000, while a PiS spokesman put the figure at almost 200,000.

Trump SLAMS New York civil fraud trial: 'It's a disgrace'
#trump #civilfraudtrial #newyork
A New York judge overseeing a civil fraud trial that could hobble Donald Trump's business empire reacted skeptically on Thursday (January 11) to his lawyer's closing argument that the former U.S. president did nothing wrong because the financial activity at the heart of the case was essentially harmless.
As Trump looked on from the defense table, Justice Arthur Engoron challenged lawyer Christoper Kise's argument that Trump should not be penalized for allegedly manipulating the value of his properties because lenders and insurers that did business with him still turned a profit.
Engoron also said he did not find a defense witness to be credible.
Engoron earlier in the day faced a security threat at his suburban home. In the trial, the judge is considering what penalties to impose after earlier ruling that Trump and his company fraudulently manipulated property values.
New York Attorney General Letitia James, who brought the case, is seeking nearly $370 million and a lifetime ban on Trump from the state's real-estate industry.
Shortly before Trump's legal team concluded its arguments, Alina Habba, another of his lawyers, pointed out that James pledged to scrutinize Trump's business practices while she was campaigning for office as a Democrat. Engoron said that was not relevant to the case.
The trial's closing arguments took place in an atmosphere of heightened security after media outlets reported a bomb threat at Engoron's suburban home. The judge has been a frequent target of Trump's criticism.

Police send bike thieves flying through the air after high-speed chase
THIS is the moment two bungling brothers were sent flying off a stolen motorbike after being shunted by a police car as they tried to escape.
Josh and Mark Bowler were sent sprawling onto a grass verge after police used 'low-speed tactical contact' to bring a dramatic chase to an abrupt halt.
The hapless siblings had earlier been spotted by police shortly after they swiped a bike from outside a shop in Sherwood, Notts., on February 8 last year.
After tracing the stolen vehicle’s location to near Broxtowe Country Park, officers made their way there and spotted two riders.
A check of the police database revealed both bikes had been stolen – with the other taken from Bestwood, in Nottingham, on January 14 last year.
It was later discovered Mark, 19, was behind that theft, with brother Josh, 21, taking the other motorbike from Sherwood.

Cold weather aids Ukrainian artillerymen against Russian forces near Bakhmut
#russia #ukraine #war
Ukrainian soldiers fighting Russian forces near Bakhmut said on Wednesday (January 10) that the frost actually makes it easier for them to move around.
Firing from a captured Russian 2B16 Nona-K mortar, one Ukrainian soldier told Reuters that frosty weather without precipitation allowed drones to "see everything".
Last month, the commander of Ukraine's armed forces Valeriy Zaluzhnyi said Ukrainian forces were resolved to defend any corner of the country, be it in Maryinka or Bakhmut or Avdiikva, two other towns in the country's east subject to months of fighting.
Bakhmut was captured by Russian troops in May and Ukrainian forces have been trying to secure nearby villages in a counteroffensive launched soon after.

Adorable moment sea lion pup climbs onto lifeguards jet ski
A surfers’ lifeguard in Northern California received a surprise on January 6 when a young sea lion jumped onboard his Jet Ski. Footage captured by Drake Stanley shows the sea lion pup perched on the driver’s seat of his Jet Ski during a water rescue in Mavericks, a popular surf spot in the area. “Here’s my buddy,” Stanley says in the footage, as he gives the cute critter a pat. “I was doing rescue for the big-wave surfers,” Stanley told Storyful. “The sea lion pup was separated from its mom and most likely being chased by a great white shark,” he added. Eventually, marine rescue was called and the sea lion was handed over to make sure it was healthy and able to be rereleased into the wild. Before handing her over, Stanley named his new buddy Bubbles, according to his Instagram post.

Baby whale playfully bumps into diver
This is the incredible moment a baby sperm whale playfully bumped into a diver - only to be scolded by an elder. Max Della Libera, 36, a freediver and underwater photographer, was on diving trip off the coast of Mauritius when he captured the footage. Max had been on the water with the pod for about an hour when the incident happened. The video shows the whale moments after bumping into Max, who can be seen swimming away. An adult whale then approaches the calf to "tell her off." Max theorised that they may be mother and daughter, but he wasn't certain as sperm whales also have babysitters. Max, who is from Pangalao in the Philippines, said: "I didn't see her approaching as I was filming her 'mum' who went deeper and as I was coming back up she bumped into my back. "I was startled but then I realized what was happening and I started to shoot this video." The experience was beautiful but intense for the diver, who prefers not to interact with whales and was trying to get away. He explained: "We were all very excited, of course, for the whole hour! It's not every day that a whale gives you that much attention. "At that particular moment, I was just trying to get away from her. "I dive with a group who prefers to let them be so we avoid touching them or getting too close to them." The calf, whom Max calls Jade, had been interested in the diver since the beginning and finally tried to play with him directly after an hour. Max explained: "Jade was playful from the start. We were swimming with them for about an hour before I captured this moment. "She was definitely trying to play here." Max thinks Jade is a little more than a few months old. The experienced diver said he'd never heard of an encounter like this despite diving several times a week for eight months of the year. He said: "[The encounter was] definitely a very rare encounter. "I had friends on that trip with over 100 dives with whales and they have never seen something like this. "I went on about 25 day trips to find and observe whales. "They were sometimes curious and approached us but they were not as interactive as this one time." The pair of sperm whales were far out into deep and open water as the large carnivores only hunt in deep water. Max said: "We drove out in the sea to seek deep waters as that's where the sperm whales are. "They can hunt at depths over 2km deep. "We were lucky to find a pod after about an hour and half and we were in and out of the water a couple of times. "We then found another pod a bit further away and joined that one instead.

I breed 11st XL Bullys and give them glamorous makeovers
AMERICAN XL Bully dogs have been labelled dangerous killers, but one owner has turned hers into Instagram sensations and even gives them makeovers.
Brit Lily Feltham, who lives in Marbella, insists her dogs, banned in the UK from today, make wonderful pets - despite a wave of horror attacks by the breed this year.
She claims they are so mellow that her dogs - 11 stone Rolex, Cartel and Kay - allow her to paint them to look like leopards, tigers and cheetahs.
Lily, 31, says: “I’ve even taken them to my friend’s salon to paint their nails and pretend to do their eyelashes.”
Having been trapped in an abusive relationship for several years, Lily says she bought her dogs to make her feel secure when they split.
“I was told every day that nobody would want me, that I was fat, ugly, full of stretch marks and would never be anything except council scum," she explains.
“I was abused both physically and emotionally, so when we broke up I was worried that he might try to come to my new house or something.
“I had a panic alarm, couldn’t sleep and was worried all the time.
“I bought my first XL Bully called Kay and, while I knew she’d never bite anyone, she looked the part.
“Just having her in the house at night made me feel safe, and I had to go out walking her, so it built up my confidence.
Mum-of-one Lily controversially uses chalk paint to transform her dogs into wild animals on Instagram - but some people think they are real cross breeds.
Lily says: “I’ve had people message to say, ‘How dare you breed a dog with a leopard or tiger,’ because they don’t realise it’s just a bit of fun.
“I mainly use chalk mixed with water to paint them and they absolutely love it. It washes off easily and doesn’t do them any harm.”
In the UK, XL Bullys face strict regulations from December 31 following a spate of attacks which have left 12 Brits dead in the past three years.
New laws prohibiting the breed were formally laid in Parliament in October under the Dangerous Dogs Act.
Breeding, selling, advertising, rehoming, abandoning and allowing an XL to stray will be illegal, and dogs will have to be kept on a lead and muzzled in public.
From February it will be illegal to own one if it’s not on a register of exempted dogs.
Lily claims the dogs are the victim of bad owners, adding: “These dogs are big and powerful but I’ve not come across a single aggressive one.
“It’s the fault of owners who use them as status symbols instead of training and looking after them properly.
"A chihuahua can bite if it’s not raised properly, but the problem is Bullies can cause a lot of damage.”
She believes the new government rules will be difficult to enforce and says Britain should have followed the lead of Spain, where owners must have special licences and a clean criminal record.

Israel Hamas War: Israeli forces raid Hamas terror infrastructures in Khan Younis
#hamas #palestine #gaza
The IDF has released new footage showcasing the operations of the Commando Brigade's Maglan and Duvdevan units in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis. The commandos conducted raids on Hamas terror infrastructure, including underground sites, aiming to enhance the IDF's "operational control" over southern Gaza.
The IDF reports that troops discovered numerous Hamas tunnel shafts in the Khan Younis area. During one incident, as soldiers were inspecting a tunnel shaft, a group of Hamas terrorists emerged and threw explosives at them. The IDF states that the terrorists retaliated, resulting in their elimination.
In a separate incident, Duvdevan snipers identified and killed nine Hamas terrorists in the Khan Younis area. Both units, Maglan and Duvdevan, have been engaged in close-quarters combat with Hamas, directing airstrikes, and employing guided munitions, according to the IDF.

Python filmed dragging possum prey up tree in Australia
A five-foot carpet python struggled to pull a possum into a tree in a suburban backyard in Buderim, Queensland, as a professional snake catcher watched on in amazement. Stuart McKenzie of Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7 said he was walking his dogs near his home in Buderim when he saw the python struggle to pull a possum into a tree. McKenzie said the python had been hanging from the tree for at least nine hours. He compared the scene to watching a carpet python try to do reps in the gym. McKenzie shared the footage to Facebook and theorized that the snake was unable to release the possum due to the weight and downwards force on its teeth. McKenzie came back to the tree 12 hours after the snake and possum were first spotted and used a pool scoop “to help the snake lift it up into the tree.” “However as soon as I took the weight of the possum with the pool scoop the snake wiggled its head off the possum and dropped it. The snake looked very relieved. Weird but fascinating situation,” he said.

VERY lucky hyena escapes jaws of angry hippo
A lucky hyena narrowly escaped being eaten by an angry hippo - that it mistook for being dead. Safari guide Carlos Ismail was leading a tour in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, when he spotted an opportunistic scavenger wading through some water. Tense footage shows the hyena creeping up on the behind of a seemingly immobile hippo half submerged under the algae. Suddenly the hyena turned tail and just in time as the hippo swung its huge body around and chased it from the water almost catching it in its powerful jaws. Carlos said: “This hyena was very lucky. It was on its own and I think it thought that the hippo was dead and would be an easy meal.

"Democracy is on the ballot" Biden puts January 6 at centre of re-election bid
#trump #biden
President Joe Biden on Friday (January 5) accused Republican Donald Trump, his likely 2024 election opponent, of instigating the Jan. 6 attacks and then refusing entreaties to call them off, putting the deadly 2021 uprising at the center of his bid for re-election.
''Members of his staff, members of his family, Republican leaders who were under attack at that very moment, pled with him. Act. Call off the mob. Imagine had he gone out and said: 'Stop.' And still, Trump did nothing. Was among the worst derelictions of duty by a president in American history.''
Biden marked three years since the Jan. 6, 2021, attacks with his first major campaign speech of the year, applying the heat on Trump as his campaign pushes against questions about his handling of the U.S. economy and his age, 81. Trump is 77.
Biden vowed that he will make the defense, protection and preservation of democracy his central promise, and suggested that a vote for Trump meant a vote for a dictatorship.
"Democracy is on the ballot. Your freedom is on the ballot," he said.
Trump, president from 2017 to 2021, who is leading the field for the Republican nomination for president, contested his defeat in the 2020 election, prompting thousands of his supporters to attack the U.S Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The failed bid to stop formal certification of the result resulted in the deaths of five people and injured dozens of police officers.
