India officials help elephant calf separated from herd reunite with its mother
8,239 views 6 Jan 2024 #elephant #nature #india
A baby elephant which was separated from its herd in southern India was reunited with its mother on Tuesday (January 2), park officials said.
Wildlife wardens found the wild elephant calf, aged approximately four to five months, roaming in a private estate after being separated from its mother and the herd in India's Anamali Tiger Reserve on December 29.
The forest officials rescued the calf and deployed drones and a search party to locate its herd. Before releasing the baby elephant to the herd, the officials washed and smeared mud on the calf to rid it of human scent.
Drone images taken by officials on Tuesday captured the scene of the reunited pair lying down together and the baby snuggling to its mother.

Storm Henk wreaks chaos across UK | Locals forced to paddle through flooded streets
#stormhenk #uknews #weather
Gloucestershire locals swapped cars for boats on Friday (January 5), as flooding forced them to paddle through the streets of the southwestern English county.
Major rivers across Britain were flooded after heavy rain, with the government issuing more than 300 flood warnings, travel operators announcing serious disruption and around 1,000 homes suffering damage so far.
A succession of storms in recent weeks meant prolonged rainfall that started on Thursday fell on saturated ground and quickly caused already-swollen rivers and waterways to burst their banks across England and Wales.
The storms have also caused flooding in other parts of Europe in recent days.

Terrifying escape from Japanese landslide after deadly earthquake
Eyewitness video shot on Monday (January 1) showed Wajima residents escaping from a landslide after a deadly earthquake struck the Japanese city in Ishikawa Prefecture. In the footage, a person is heard shouting “it's crumbling”, “I can't believe it" and "hurry, hurry mother, run, come here!" while another person is seen running from the landslide as it crashes down on a road, downing power lines and destroying several houses in its path. A crack is seen developing on the road. The date and location of the video was verified by original file metadata. Buildings, trees and hills seen in the video also matched street view imagery from that location. Witnesses at the site, who are seeking shelter in Kanazawa, Ishikawa’s capital, said the mountain above their home collapsed and engulfed all the houses below it. They added that there is a shortage of emergency supplies, including fuel, food and drinking water, in evacuation centres. The full extent of damage and casualties remains unclear three days after the quake, which is already the deadliest in Japan since at least 2016, killing at least 73. Nearly 600 tremors continue to hit the peninsula, raising fears of landslides and further damage to the infrastructure.

Shocking moment 20-pound dog chases three bears away
#northcarolina
A feisty little dog in Asheville, North Carolina, proved what it means to be small but mighty when he chased three bears out of his yard in early December.
Jerry Brake owns the camera that captured the video of his 20-pound Labradoodle, Eddie. Brake told Storyful he heard barking but did not know about the frightening encounter until he reviewed the surveillance footage.
“We couldn’t see what he was barking at. The next day we noticed bear scat inside the fence, and checked the security cameras,” Brake said. “That’s when we found out about Eddie’s scary adventure.”
The video shows three black bears moseying inside the fenced area before Eddie charges toward them. Two bears manage to hop the fence, but the third comes face-to-face with Eddie, who continues his offense. After the last bear gets over the fence the small dog can be seen running back toward the house.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission cautions that, while black bears tend to be shy, they may become more bold if they have become dependent on human foods. The commission encourages residents to secure food, garbage, and recycling, as well as cleaning and storing outdoor grills.

Lifeguards rescue stranded baby whale shark near Cape Town
Lifeguards near Cape Town were quick to react on January 4, after a baby whale shark they deemed likely to have been separated from its mother got stranded at a local beach. Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club said that the South African lifeguards “blew for people to get out of the water” after they spotted the mammal about 65 feet offshore. In this video, which was recorded by one of their staff members, rescuers can be seen pushing the calf back into deeper water. The club said this was a “once-in-a-lifetime moment” for beachgoers and lifeguards, as whale sharks do not normally occur in this location, preferring warm tropical waters. “Clifton was treated to a very special visit,” they said, but reminded members of the public to keep their distance from marine and coastal wildlife at all times.

Hamas exploiting children in Gaza tunnels exposed
#hamas #palestine #israel
Earlier today, the IDF revealed evidence showing that the Hamas terrorist organization indoctrinates children in the Gaza Strip and incites them to terrorist activity.
From a young age, children are educated to hate Israel and Jews. In schools, youth movements, and at camps, children undergo both theoretical and practical military training.
In routine times, Hamas operates summer camps where children learn to shoot weapons, storm through tunnels, fight against tanks and even kidnap soldiers. These camps are early stages of training for Hamas' military wing. Based on intelligence it is estimated that a significant number of minors are active in the Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorist organizations.
Even during the war, the Hamas terrorist organization uses minors for various tasks, for example sending children to deliver both messages and ammunition. The IDF previously disclosed the investigation of a company commander in the Hamas 'Zeytoun' Battalion, in which he detailed the terrorist organization's fighting doctrine.
Based on this doctrine, children are used to transfer ammunition with the understanding that the IDF will not harm them due to the IDF's compliance with international law. One of the examples of this is the transfer of explosives in vegetable bags by children in Gaza.
A further example is the sending of children to combat zones after attacks in order to assess the damage and report it to the terrorists who are hiding in shelters.

Putin blitzes village 95 miles INSIDE Russia as missile leaves vast crater in devastating blunder
#russia #putin #ukraine
Russia has admitted blitzing a village deep within its own territory in a devastating blunder that left buildings destroyed around a smouldering crater.
Footage shows devastation in Petropavlovka, Voronezh region - 95 miles from the border with Ukraine - with at least six houses blasted and half a street left in ruins.
A huge crater was seen in the ground along with scenes of burnt down cars and devastated houses.
Locals from the village, which has a population of 4,819, were evacuated and transported to temporary accommodation centres.
Officials denied any casualties but the plaintiff voice of a villager is heard on a video desperately pleading: “Where is Vovka [Vladimir]? Alive or not? Damn, damn. Alive or not? ****ing hell.”
Ukrainian sources believe a powerful subsonic Kh-101/555 missile hit the village after a misfiring from an unspecified Russian warplane.

Alligator sneaks through dog door before being wrangled
AN alligator was wrangled from a Louisiana home after the family dog alerted its owner’s to the reptile’s presence in the early hours of June 24. Donald Schultz, who recorded this footage of the approximately five-foot gator in his New Iberia home, told Storyful it entered through the dog door. He said his Australian cattle dog, Panda, growled at about 1:30 am, leading his wife to believe someone might be in the house. “I grabbed my pistol and, in my underwear, I turned the corner into the hallway. It was dark but I stopped because I could see a shape on the edge of the rug,” he said. “I couldn’t focus very well, having just woke up, but when the full shape registered in my brain, I jumped back.”

One dead, more than 33 wounded in massive Russian attack on Kyiv
An apartment block was hit by falling debris, killing one and leaving at least 33 people wounded as Russia launched massive air attack on Kyiv on Tuesday (January 2).
Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said an elderly woman had died in an ambulance after being wounded by the debris after Ukraine shot down incoming weapons.
Russia attacked with waves of different missiles during the morning rush hour, striking residential buildings and civilian infrastructure. Military authorities issued air alerts that lasted for at least three hours.
Klitschko said gas pipelines had been damaged in Kyiv's Pecherskyi district, and electricity and water had been cut off in several districts of the capital. Rescuers were putting out fires in several places, he said.
The loss of electricity and water brought back memories of last winter when Russia pounded the energy grid, causing frequent power cuts and plunging millions into darkness.
After the initial aerial barrage, Yuri Ihnat, spokesperson for the Ukrainian air force, said the situation remained tense and that air defences were bracing for more Russian missile launches.
Russia has stepped up air strikes on Ukraine over the New Year period, and on Friday (December 29) conducted its largest air attack of the almost two-year-old war on Ukraine, killing at least 39 people.

Putin unleashes devastating wave of 110 missiles including hypersonic Daggers in revenge onslaught
#ukraine #putin #russia
Russia has unleashed a devastating wave of 110 missiles including a record number of hypersonic Daggers in a blistering revenge attack on Ukraine.
It comes after Vladimir Putin vowed to respond to Kyiv's deadly strike on the Russian border city of Belgorod on New Year's Eve that left 25 people dead and more than 100 injured.
Early on Tuesday, incoming Russian missiles reportedly "changed direction" in a bid to confuse Kyiv’s air defences with a "zig-zagging" movement.
In total, 110 different types of missiles were unleashed, marking some of the most intense strikes of the war so far - with more reported to be on the way.
Putin reportedly deployed a record number of 11 hypersonic Kinzhal - or Dagger - missiles simultaneously.

Hamas’s deputy leader Saleh Arouri ‘killed in Israeli drone strike in Beirut’
#israel #hamas #beirut
Hamas has claimed it's deputy leader Saleh al-Arouri has been killed in an Isreali drone strike in Beirut.
Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reports the senior official died in an explosion caused by an attack on an apartment used as Hamas' office.
Two other Hamas commanders in Lebanon - Samir Findi Abu Amer and Azzam Al-Aqraa Abu Ammar - were also killed in the precision strike, Al Aqsa TV reports.
Arouri was a senior official in Hamas's politburo but was known to be deeply involved in its military affairs.
He was one of the founders of Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades - Hamas' military wing - and headed the terrorist group's presence in the West Bank.
The deputy leader was seen as Hamas' prime orchestrator of terrorism in the West Bank - and was wanted by Israel for many years.
PM Benjamin Netanyahu had threatened to kill him even before the Hamas bloodbath on October 7, which sparked the ongoing war.
Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack.

Dogs confront bear before it swipes and sends them fleeing
"Dogs Confront Bear, Flee as it Swipes: Intense Wildlife Encounter Caught on Camera"
adult bear and cub, used to a generally peaceful neighborhood in Asheville, North Carolina, were bothered by hubbub on July 22, when their food foraging turned into a confrontation with local dogs. David Oppenheimer – who regularly encounters black bears at his Asheville home – told Storyful that he had been delighted earlier that day when his security camera recorded the “adorable pair” casually strolling down his driveway and testing his bear-proof trash can. Oppenheimer walked up the street after the bears exited his property, in the hope that he would catch a glimpse of them heading away, but what he caught instead was the tense encounter between the bears and two dogs. He filmed the mother bear standing between the barking dogs and the cub, as the cub fed on a berry bush, according to Oppenheimer. The adult bear can be seen eventually lunging toward the dogs, who back off.

Over the past week, the 401st Brigade has been operating against the Daraj Tuffah Battalion in the northern Gaza Strip. The soldiers conducted targeted raids on military posts and the residences of senior officials and neutralized dozens of anti-tank missile cells.
Following intelligence regarding the presence of a terrorist cell in a building, IDF soldiers from the Shaked Battalion scanned the area and conducted a targeted raid on the location. During the activity, soldiers encountered several terrorists and engaged in a firefight, which ended with the soldiers killing the terrorists.
Whilst scanning the building, soldiers found a camera belonging to one of the terrorists who was killed, with footage showing Hamas’ operational methods.

Moment Sea Lion charges at beachgoers in San Diego
BEACHGOERS were seen fleeing as a sea lion charged toward them at La Jolla Cove in San Diego, California, on July 23. Video recorded by Japhet Perez Estrada shows the territorial sea lions lurching at a group of people gathered along the shore. A man on a loudspeaker is heard warning the beachgoers to “give that large male sea lion plenty of room” as “they have bit people and they’re protected animals.” Estrada, who told Storyful he was a “local open-water swimmer” from the area, said on Instagram that the sea lions didn’t charge at him as he “wasn’t bothering [them] like the tourists who were on the beach.” The Ocean Conservancy said that male California sea lions “use sound to defend their territory,” adding that the animals “will bark on land and underwater to fend off intruders.”

Worker dodges hungry alligator by inches during feeding time at reptile park
A staff member at a Colorado reptile rescue park had to move fast to escape the jaws of a huge alligator during feeding time recently. Footage by Claire Menegatti shows Colorado Gator Farm employee Chad’s near miss while feeding a turkey to Elvis, a 12-foot, 600-pound resident alligator. According to a Facebook post by the park, the turkey missed Elvis’s mouth, causing the hungry reptile to lunge where he saw the motion. “It’s crazy how quickly doing an educational demonstration can turn dangerous. As you can see, Elvis wanted to eat the turkey Chad was offering,” it said. “When the turkey didn’t land in his mouth, Elvis was focused on where he saw movement,” the post continued. “It’s why whenever working with large reptile it’s always good to have a backup with you.” Luckily for Chad, he was able to move out of Elvis’s way quickly and unharmed, while another colleague intervened.
