Ti West’s MaXXXine is the third instalment of a career-defining trilogy for the director and his star, Mia Goth. The actress received some of the best notices of her career for the last film in the series, Pearl, and her double role in X made her a genre icon. MaXXXine is a star vehicle for her through and through, but while she delivers a good performance again, the film can’t help but pale compared to its somewhat scrappier predecessors Wanna support us and look good doing it?

We've dredged through some truly awful dreck in this series but this may just be my most hated. Because to take a character and franchise as beloved as Freddy Krueger and Nightmare On Elm Street and mess it up to such a degree takes a level of "I hate money" that I didn't even think was possible. There was a lot that went wrong with this film, from a lead who didn't want to be there to a villain who hated the franchise; nearly every element was working against it. Which is why A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010) is Awfully Good.

Look, the history of video game movies, both at the beginning of its run and currently, is spotty at best. You had bad then and you have bad now and while you can get some more indie games being made into movies or at least studios taking more chances with what ips they decide to use now, back in the early 90s it was only the best of the best and the most popular that would be turned into movies. Mortal Kombat came along and changed everything, at least momentarily! And boy, is it hard not to scream that at the top of my lungs whenever I say it.

There's no denying that there's a tremendous amount of pressure on writer/director Ishana Shyamalan with her debut feature. Her father's reputation will always follow her, but let's not pretend that's entirely a bad thing. Unlike many first-time directors, she was able to hone her craft as a 2nd Unit Director on many M Night productions. This allows her to skip some of the steps common for most young filmmakers and avoid easy trappings. If there's one thing that's clear after experiencing The Watchers, we most definitely have two Shyamalans out in the world, for better or worse. And it goes without saying that I'll be avoiding spoilers as much as possible in this review as I think the fresher you go into this, the better.

Today’s film not only had three times the budget of The Collector, it also has one of the craziest kill scenes for a wide-release movie. The original was from a far less dark castle in Schlock and Gimmick Purveyor William Castle, and it starred Vincent Price as a man offering strangers money to stay in an allegedly haunted house for a night. While The Haunting failed on multiple levels to improve with age, how does House on Haunted Hill look after a quarter of a century? Does its cheesy yet graphic tone feel at home in the time of A24 and elevated horror, or should it forfeit its 1 million dollar check and leave the cursed grounds forever? I remember seeing the Chuck Norris joke book in a Barnes and Noble store and leafing through it only to find a bunch of absolutely absurd and comically over the top things that Chuck Norris could and would do to you or what he kept behind his beard. Norris ended up with a couple of horror movies in his credits. Hellbound, which I’m still undecided on if I want to cover or not, and today’s movie, Silent Rage was a fun flick to revisit.
