We suffer from bad soil. Really bad. So we’re going to test our soil to see what it’s lacking, because at this point, plant growth is either stunted once seedlings are planted or they just yellow and die altogether. We purchased this test kit which checks the levels pH, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium so we can do it ourselves without having to send the samples to a lab. Once we figure out what our garden is missing, this kit also gives advice on how to adjust to the proper levels. Now we have a good jumping off point and can begin fertilizing and composting our garden to get things back on track. Blueberry harvest—one of our favorite days of the year. Because it means bellies full of blueberries and lots and lots of jam! Blueberry Jam Recipe 2 cups of fresh or frozen blueberries 3/4 cups of sugar 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice 1. Combine all ingredients in a pot. 2. Bring to a boil. 3. Reduce to medium heat. Let it boil while stirring occasionally for 10 minutes. 4. At the end of 10 minutes it should be slightly thickened. You can crush some of the berries at this point. We crush some and leave some whole. 5. Transfer to sanitized jars and either store or can according to your canner’s instructions. 6. Enjoy! 1. Buy a little extra of one item each time you go to the store. 2. Buy items in bulk from a trusted bulk food distributer. (We use AzureStandard.com) 3. Pick up 5 gallon food safe buckets with Gamma Seal lids for dry goods. (We got ours from Tractor Supply) 4. Optional: store food in mylar bags inside of the buckets to increase its shelf life. 5. Another option: Purchase from a pre-sealed food supplier. There are a ton out there. We have a few that we bought from heavensharvest.com 6. 1. Follow the instructions that come with your incubator to set it up successfully! 2. Be sure to monitor humidity and temperature daily and adjust as necessary. 3. If you want, pick up some add-ons including humidity/temperature gauges and an egg turner (some kits come with these things though). 4. Turn on your incubator and establish temperature BEFORE adding eggs. 5. Use only home grown/local eggs where a rooster is present for fertilization and eggs that still have the bloom on them. Washing removes the bloom and allows bacteria access inside the shell. You might end up with some stinkers! 6. Mark eggs for turning. Turn 2-3 times daily if you do not have an automatic egg turner. 7. Chicken eggs hatch in 19-21 days! Get ready for some cute little fluff balls!
