I love helping my husband get ready for work every morning!
I’m usually up long before the alarm goes off, which means I have plenty of time to get things done for him and for me before anyone else wakes up. It’s a joy to serve my household

Hatching Happiness: 5 Reasons I’m All About Incubating
There is no respect for the lives of these little chickies when it comes to big hatcheries. Everything is industrialized and no thought is given to what is best for them. They are tossed around and vaccinated in a pretty violent way. Hatching at home allows us to give our little chicks the care and respect they should have. I also don’t have to worry about receiving dead chicks in the mail. That’s never fun.

Avoid These 5 Homesteading Slip-Ups for a Thriving Homestead Journey! #HomesteadHacks #LearnAndGrow
Don’t make these homesteading mistakes!
-5. Buying new…buy used instead
-4. Pay cash! Don’t go into debt. It’s too hard to climb out of debt, and the banking system knows it! They love making money off the backs of hardworking people. It’s called debt slavery for a reason.
-3. Not seeing advice from experienced homesteaders. Ask to visit other people’s farms. Work alongside of them and learn as you go!
-2. Getting animals and not being ready for them…first build the coop, then get the chickens. (We have done this part backward several times.)
-1. Taking on too much at one time. Start slow and build as you feel comfortable. Make sure things are working well before expanding. You’ll avoid being overwhelmed and be successful!

What are the benefits of using a brooder for keeping chicks warm versus using a heat lamp?
The heat lamp does cost less in the beginning, but is saving money worth it overall?
1. A heat lamp can be an abrasive amount of heat in one spot. It’s hard to regulate the temperature, and chicks have no where to escape the heat. Overheated chicks can lead to pasty butt and stress-induced aggression toward one another. A brooder mimics the mama hen. When they first hatch they can choose to stay underneath to keep warm, but as they get older they can go in and out as they please. It can also be raised to accommodate them as they grow.
2. A heat lamp is hazardous to flying foul! As those little guys start to flutter, they might accidentally get burned by the heat lamp, and it does get hot! But with a brooder, there is nothing that can hurt those little chickies.
3. A heat lamp must stay on at all times, meaning they never get a break from the light. Constant light means they cannot regulate themselves to day and night and have difficulty sleeping and long term health effects. But with a brooder they can snuggle in without abrasive lighting and sleep when appropriate.
4. And lastly, the biggest danger of a heat lamp is fire! It’s easy for them to slip and fall into the brooder box. So play it save and go for the brooder! It costs a little more upfront, but is worth it in the long run.

Shepherd’s pie is a family favorite! It’s one of those heartwarming foods that hits the spot.
Instructions
1. Cook your meat of choice. Ground or shredded beef or pulled pork are great options!
2. Cook some veggies. We used onions, carrots, celery, and green beans. Peas are often used, but they’re not a favorite in our house.
3. Combine the meat and veggies.
4. Make a gravy and cover your meat and veggies.
5. Spread out the meat and veggies in the bottom of a 9 x 13” pan.
6. Make some mashed potatoes and spread on the top of the meat and veggies.
7. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.
8. Top with cheddar cheese and bake for another 5-10 minutes until the cheese is melted.
9. Allow to sit for about 10 minutes before serving.

Chocolate Cake Recipe
Ingredients:
2 eggs
1 c milk
1/2 c coconut oil
2 t vanilla extract
2 c sugar
1 3/4 flour (substitute 1 for 1 GF flour easily!)
3/4 c cocoa powder
1 1/2 t baking powder
1 1/2 t baking soda
1 t salt
1 c boiling water
Frosting:
1/2 c butter
2/3 c cocoa powder
3 c powdered sugar, sifted
1/3 c milk
1 t vanilla extract
Cake Instructions:
1. Heat oven to 350
2. If you’re using 9” round cake pans, grease them with coconut oil (please, please stay away from cooking sprays. They may be convenient, but they’re not good for you!). If you’re using cupcake pans, prep them now.
3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to a mixing bowl and mix for 2 minutes until smooth.
4. Combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl.
5. Mix with wet ingredients. Do not over mix.
6. Add boiling water and combine.
7. Pour cake batter into pans or fill cupcakes 3/4 full.
8. Bake cakes for 30-35 minutes (cupcakes about 20 minutes) until the top is spongy.
9. Cool completely before frosting
Frosting Instructions:
1. Melt butter
2. Add in cocoa and mix.
3. Add sugar and milk and mix until smooth.
4. Adjust with more milk if it’s too thick.
5. Add in vanilla.
6. Frost when the cake has cooled completely.

Don’t throw out those pumpkins! Use them in recipes (or feed them them to your farm animals).
Instructions
1. Cut the top off of your pumpkin and scrape out all the seeds. Set aside to plant or feed to chickens or piggies.
2. Cut the pumpkin in half.
3. Lay pumpkin halves on a baking sheet with the rind up.
4. Bake at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes (more if it’s a larger pumpkin).
5. Remove the rind (carefully. It’s hot!).
6. Puree the meat of the pumpkin until smooth.
