How Can I Rage Against the Machine?
Start little with things like BBQ sauce. It’s easy and once you get the hang of it you can make it exactly how you like it. Free yourself from the system and join the parallel economy.
Homemade BBQ sauce
2 c ketchup
2 1/2 T Worcestershire sauce
2 T molasses
1 t mustard powder
1/2 t onion powder
1 T lemon juice
Simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Store in refrigerator.

Benefits of Colloidal Silver on Chickens
Colloidal silver can be used to treat a whole host of infections, whether bacterial, fungal, or viral. While there are many options for treating chickens medically, it is one of the best holistic options for treating chickens from illnesses.
Adding colloidal silver to water: 2 tablespoons per gallon of water
Treating orally: 1 cc via dropper
Treating topically: apply directly to affected area
Treating eyes: apply directly to eye using eye dropper

Wings of the Morning
But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. Ps. 59:16
Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. Ps. 143:8
If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea even there shall Thy hand lead me. Thy right hand shall hold me. Ps 139:9-10

We Finally Finished Our Kitchen!
Our kitchen was in desperate need of a change. When we bought our house the kitchen was closed off from the rest of the room with a wall in between the living room and kitchen so we knocked it down to open up that space, which helped a lot with having young children playing in the living room while I worked in the kitchen.
Over the years we updated the kitchen here and there, but only as time and money would allow. We added a pantry which we really needed and replaced flooring.
This time we replaced our backsplash, kitchen sink, countertop, and cabinets. I love working on projects in our house and making it more beautiful and homey. It can be overwhelming sometimes to navigate family life and finishing a project. Everything is messy and it takes time to get it all done. But the result is always worth it.
There is so much value in doing a job on our own and to teach our children how to do that job so they develop the same skills to use when they’re on their own. And when we’re finished we can all be proud of a job well done. We know the struggles that we had while we worked side by side. We helped each other and overcame challenges together. And that room that we know and love so well is deeply rooted in our love for each other and the moments we spent building it together.

Organizing My Pantry
Our pantry was in need of some serious attention. It was always a mess and there were things I remembered purchasing, but I couldn’t even find! We got some jars, 5 gallon buckets, labels, and markers and got to work. Our plan has been to keep staples in the pantry. We have tried a bunch of different recipes to see what ingredients we want to keep on hand that are the most versatile for what our family likes to eat. We also went with 100% organic for everything we bought. Some of our jars are for snacks and granolas that we make at home. After cleaning, sorting, and restocking we finally have something that works great for our family and looks great too!

Here Are Some Frequently Asked Questions About Roosters
Q: What is the benefit of having a rooster?
A: Roosters serve a great purpose in the flock. Their main job is to protect the hens, and we observe this in our roosters all the time. They are always looking for threats and even allow the hens to eat first so they can keep watch for predators during feeding time. Their other main job is to fertilize the eggs.
Q: Can you have more than one rooster?
A: Yes, you can. We currently have several grown roosters and a bunch coming up in the ranks. A rooster will protect several hens at a time. Each rooster develops his own flock and stays within that group of hens. So one rooster will travel around the yard with maybe 5-10 hens and we’ll have several flocks roaming at a time.
Q: Do roosters fight?
A: Not regularly. They will create a hierarchy though. Sometimes one rooster will challenge another. We see this especially in young ones just starting to enter into maturity. Once they get their crow, they might challenge one of the other roosters, but they are quickly put in their place. Or if a new fully grown rooster enters the flock, the others will put him in place when he arrives. But once order has been established they all settle down.
Q: Are all roosters mean?
A: We have had some pretty mean roosters. Breed and individual temperament does seem to influence their behavior. Even some that we have incubated and raised by hand have turned out to be somewhat aggressive. Roosters that are overly aggressive toward humans or that harm the hens will end up on our dinner table. But the majority of our roosters have been very kind and gentle.
Q: Do roosters lay eggs?
A: You would be surprised how often I am asked this question! No, just like with humans only the females produce eggs. Roosters’ bodies were designed by our Creator to fertilize the eggs that the females produce.

Our favorite pumpkin muffin recipe!
Ingredients we used:
2 fresh eggs
1/4 c raw milk
1 1/2 c pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
1/2 c coconut oil
1/2 c cane sugar
1 t vanilla extract
1/2 c turbanado sugar (brown sugar will do fine)
2 c 1:1 GF flour (we used Bob’s Red Mill; you can also use a gluten flour if you don’t need GF)
2 t cinnamon
1 t pumpkin pie spice
1/2 t salt
1 t baking soda
Streusel topping ingredients:
2/3 c GF flour
3 T cane sugar
2 T turbanado sugar
1 t pumpkin pie spice
1/4 c softened butter
Pumpkin seeds
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
2. Line muffin pan with liners.
3. Wisk together dry ingredients
4. In separate bowl wise together wet ingredients until smooth.
5. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients until just combined.
6. Scoop batter into muffin pan. I use a 1/8 (2 T) cup to do so. Fill until almost full.
7. Sprinkle pumpkin seeds on top and press in lightly to make sure they stay after baking.
8. Mix the streusel topping.
9. Sprinkle (generously) on top of the muffin batter, pressing lightly to keep it from loosening and falling off after baking.
10. Bake for 5 minutes at 425 degrees, then reduce the temperature to 375 degrees and bake for another 17-19 minutes. Check with a toothpick and do not overtake.
11. Allow to cool for a few minutes before eating.
12. Enjoy!

Silkie Roosters
On our homestead roosters are very important. We breed our own chickens so we want to make sure we have strong, healthy roosters to do their part in that way, but also to help protect the flock…with a couple of exceptions.
Our frizzle rooster, Stoic, and our newest addition, Bob Ross. Bob Ross is the new favorite of our 10 year old who is the keeper of our roosters. He can often be found sitting in the recliner with him or carrying him around the property talking with him. And Bob Ross has never tried to get away. He seems to love him just as much as he is loved.
His calm, gentle temperament seems almost therapeutic for our boy as he cares for him, and responsibility for someone else at a young age can help develop and nurture his self esteem, empathy, and confidence in himself to do a job well.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Your Chickens Water?!
We’ve seen vitamin packs that are sold to add to our chicken’s water and we’ve used them from time to time, but there are actually some great ways to give your flock a boost without using store bought powders.
Adding organic, unpasteurized Apple cider vinegar with the mother to their water is an excellent way to help our chickens especially during the hot summer months. Just adding one table spoon to one gallon of water can help reduce the heat stress. We found significant improvement in our layer hens and went from 2 eggs a day to 12 within just a few days of adding apple cider vinegar to their water.
It increases their antioxidants and helps get rid of bad gut bacteria. Apple cider vinegar improves digestion and the absorption of nutrients. It has been proven to help ward off coccidiosis and to keep it at bay if it’s been an issue in your flock. It is also a great anti diarrheal, a lice treatment, and helps keep algae and bacteria from forming in their water.
There are some claims to apple cider vinegar being used to replace antibiotics as well, although we have not yet tried this. It definitely keeps them feeling good and has improved their overall health.
Be sure not to overuse apple cider vinegar as it can lead to issues this way too, and because of corrosive properties do not add it to metal water containers.
