5 Tips for How to FREEZE DRY HERBS
I grow most herbs at some point during the year in my garden. However, my favorite cool-season herbs are a fond memory during the summer heat. It is the same with fresh garden basil; most winters are too cold for basil to grow well. So I love preserving the seasonal abundance of fresh herbs by freeze-drying. It is my favorite way to preserve fresh herbs.
Don’t let your herbs go to waste. Instead, freeze-dry herbs to preserve the herbs’ flavor and quality. This simple process ensures that your herbs stay fresh and tasty for months or even years. Learn how to freeze-dry herbs with these tips.
Drying herbs is an age-old method of preserving them, but did you know that freeze drying is even better? Freeze drying herbs helps to preserve their flavor, nutrition, and color. Watch this video to learn more about the benefits of freeze drying your herbs.

How to PROTECT your Garden in a FREEZE
Looks like it’s going to be a cold week! Here’s what to do to prepare.
•Harvest fruits from any frost susceptible plants like tomatoes and peppers.
•Water plants well before a frost event. Moist soil may absorb more heat and radiate it throughout the night.
• Cover plants before sundown to trap the stored heat from during the day. If you wait to cover it until after nightfall, the heat may have dissipated.
• Use frost cloth, burlap, drop cloths, sheets, blankets, or even newspapers to cover plants. Do not use plastic.
• Cover the plant completely, allowing the cover to drape down to the soil around the plant. This traps the warmth inside. Don’t gather the cover around the trunk; it won’t trap radiated heat from around the plant.
More questions about what to do and which plants need covering? Head to my blog or youtube for a detailed blog post: https://growinginthegarden.com/what-to-cover-in-a-freeze-frost-protection-in-the-garden/ and video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZ8h2bSYF0c

The BEST SOIL for Raised Bed Gardens
It’s time to fill my new metal raised bed from @GardenInMinutes
I worked with @arizonawormfarm6818 to develop this raised bed soil mix for southwest gardeners in Arizona’s growing zones. It combines six-month finished compost and worm castings from @azwormfarm with coco coir and coarse perlite for optimal water retention and basalt dust for mineralization. Add this ready-made blend to your raised beds or container gardens for the optimal mix of nutrients and water retention. This bed is deep (17”), and I can’t wait to plant!

How to Grow Sesame Seeds
Sesame was the surprise hit of my summer garden.
I started seeds indoors in March and then planted them outside in April. Sesame thrived during the long, hot summer days. The plants grew large and were covered in pods.
The pods began turning color around October. As they matured, I collected the pods in a paper sack. Once the pods finished drying, I collected the seeds. We’ve already added these to salad and will try them in sesame chicken next.
Have you grown sesame seeds?

Why I PICK OFF my STRAWBERRY blossoms
To help encourage vigorous strawberry plants and large future harvests, there are a couple of things you can do:
• To encourage root production, remove flowers for 3-4 weeks after planting.
•Remove runners from plants to keep the energy in plants. If desired, pot up runners with potting soil and keep them well-watered while they develop roots. (Plant once roots form.)

CITRUS Pruning Tip for MORE FRUIT
If you are growing citrus, it is important to check for any branches growing below the graft union and remove them. These “suckers” are from the rootstock. They will take energy away from developing fruit.
Because most citrus is grafted onto rootstock, the fruit you want the tree to produce will only come from branches above that graft line.
The rootstock type is chosen for desirable growing characteristics such as size, frost, or drought resistance, not for the fruit. Removing suckers will increase the energy available to the tree (more fruit!)
If the branch is larger than the one in this video, use clean, sharp pruners to remove it.

When to CUT BACK ASPARAGUS
Asparagus is one of my favorite crops to eat right in the garden. The flavor is SO GOOD! Right now, my asparagus looks like a wild jungle, and that's a good thing, it's all part of growing asparagus.
• Asparagus roots produce individual stalks above ground.
When the stalks are harvested in the spring, this depletes the energy from the roots.
• After a period of harvesting, the stalks are allowed to develop into ferns. Vigorous and healthy ferns in the summer help ensure a good asparagus harvest the next spring. (The photosynthesis that takes place in the ferns throughout the summer replenishes the energy of the depleted roots.)
• The ferns go dormant in winter and turn brown or yellow — at this point, they can be cut back. In cold-winter areas, leave the stalks in place until spring; they help protect the root crowns.
• In the spring, shoots appear from the overwintering roots. These stalks grow larger in circumference every year as their life cycle continues.
Are you growing asparagus? If not, now is an excellent time to plant if you live in a mild winter area.

Planting ONIONS from Seed
If you live in a mild winter climate, it's an excellent time to plant onions. You can plant onion seeds or transplants during November.
These are Texas Early Grano Onions - A short-day onion. Onion varieties come in 3 different types; the best one to use depends on where you live.
• Short-Day Onions: Grow best in the Southern States, including Arizona's low desert.
• Intermediate-Day Onions: Grow best in middle regions of the United States.
• Long-Day Onions: Grow best in the Northern States.
Looking for more onion-growing tips? Head to my blog https://growinginthegarden.com/how-to-grow-onions-10-tips-for-growing-onions/

STRAWBERRY Planting Tips
If you live in a mild winter climate, now is an excellent time to plant strawberries. Planting in the fall allows strawberries to be established by spring and gives you more strawberries!
Here are a few tips:
•Choose the best type of strawberry for your climate. Here in the low desert, Chandler and Sequoia are two of my favorites.
•Don't bury the crown (central growing point) it should remain above soil level.
•Allow about 1 foot between plants.
•To encourage root production, remove flowers for 3-4 weeks after planting.
•Mulch strawberries to preserve moisture and keep strawberries from drying out.

In Bed WORM COMPOSTING REFRESH
Now that temperatures are cooling down, it is time to refresh my in-bed worm composters. I've been in bed vermicomposting for 2 1/2 years. I use them for composting all of my kitchen scraps - it is so convenient. The worms make the castings where they are needed, right in the beds.
Here's what I did to refresh them after the long hot summer:
• Cleaned out the bins - spread the remaining castings and compost around my beds.
• Shredded cardboard boxes
• Added shredded cardboard to the hole
• Wet it down
• Added some worms - these beds had worms previously, so I only added a few - I split one bag from@Arizona Worm Farm between4 beds
• Added food scraps
• Topped with brown (something that used to be a tree) and covered (I use a ceramic tile)

Cover Crop Potatoes
Last season's straw potato harvest was amazing. This time I skipped buying the straw and used this summer's chopped-up cover crop instead.
Sprouts are already coming up through the compost so I think it's going to work well.
Are you growing a fall crop of potatoes this year?

Simple way to THIN SEEDLINGS
Don't let the extra sprouted seedlings go to waste. Many seeds can be separated and transplanted into their own containers (especially when they are very young).
All the extra seedlings mean you have plenty to plant and share!

10 EASIEST FALL FLOWERS for Mild Winters
Low desert friends, the oppressive heat of an Arizona summer is (almost!) gone. It's time to plant flowers that grow and thrive during Arizona's cooler months.
These ten flowers are the answer to some questions I get all the time:
• What are the easiest flowers to grow in Arizona in the fall?
• Which flowers can I plant from transplant in the fall that grow well through spring?
• Are there annual flowers that grow well in pots and containers?
• Which flowers can I buy from a big box store that will grow well during the cooler months and not die in a couple of weeks?
Did I miss any of your favorites? Which flowers are you going to plant this fall?
If you're looking for specific growing information about each flower I share planting dates and tips for all ten flowers in my latest blog post. https://growinginthegarden.com/10-easiest-fall-flowers-in-arizona/
