STOP! Don't prune yet! Here's why.
Although it's unsightly, the sun-damaged parts of your citrus and other plants protect the rest of the plant from further damage. Newly pruned areas are more likely to suffer sun damage. Now is not the time to prune.
Wait to prune damaged areas or cut the plant back until temperatures begin to cool in the fall.

HOT Summer Garden Harvest
After over 3 weeks of record-breaking (110°F/43°C+) heat, the garden is stressed. Removing the existing fruit can help the plant focus on survival rather than ripening and production.
There were plenty of sun-damaged and sunburnt fruit, but we still got an amazing harvest. Nature is resilient. I am grateful for each fruit.

Keep chickens COOL in a HEATWAVE 🥵
Hot summers, like the ones we experience in the low desert of Arizona, can be very stressful (and sometimes fatal) for chickens.
Here’s what I do to help keep my chickens cool when temperatures climb:
1. Shade – Providing shade from direct sun rays is essential. This can be done through trees, a canopy, or other materials that can block the sun and keep your chickens in the shade during the day.
2. Ventilation & Misters – Make sure your coop is well-ventilated with plenty of airflow through windows and fans. This will help keep the air circulating, allowing cooler air inside and hotter air out. Running a mister for a couple of hours during the hottest time of day can help too.
3. Provide extra water – Chickens need more water in hot weather, and they will drink up to twice as much water when it’s hot. Make sure the water is always cool—not warm or hot—and add ice cubes if the temperature allows for it.
4. Treats – High water content treats like watermelon slices or frozen grapes can provide relief from the heat. You can also give your chickens frozen yogurt or icy treats made with fruits and vegetables.
5. Cool baths / Ice blocks for their feet – Chickens love water, so providing them with a cool bath from time to time is a great way to help them beat the heat! Make sure to provide shallow pans of water, just big enough for the chickens to dip their feet and wings in.

GROW BAG GARDENING: Cantaloupe grown vertically
20 Gallon grow bag
+ 1 Bag Growing in the Garden Raised Bed Mix from Arizona Worm Farm.
+ 1 medium oya from Growoya.
+ Hale's Best Cantaloupe seeds
+ Ladder Mesh Block Trellis
= Homegrown fresh melons for the next couple of months
Don't be afraid to get started gardening. Grow bags are an excellent way to get started right away.
Fill them with good soil and put them in a location that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. You don't have to add an oya. However, using an oya will allow you to water less often.
You can do it!

Best Way to Kill Squash Bugs & Cucumber Beetles
Keeping a bucket or cup of soapy water in your garden makes it simple to dispose of pests like squash bugs & cucumber beetles right when you see them.
• Regularly inspect your plants for signs of pests; early detection is key to successfully keeping them in check.
• Handpicking: Be vigilant about checking your plants and handpick beetles and squash bugs. Check the undersides of leaves for eggs. Keep a cup of soapy water near your plant to dispose of pests easily.
• Beneficial insects: Encourage natural predators like ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps by planting diverse flowering plants in your garden.
• Learn to identify all stages of common pests, so you know what you are looking for.

Onion CURING Tips
Are you growing onions this year? Cure onions before storing them for longer storage life.
• Choose a shady, protected location that is around 75-80°F.
• Provide a slight breeze with a fan if possible if it is indoors. (I cure mine on a wire rack in my laundry room).
• Lay the onions out in a single layer
• Allow the onion stems to wither.
• The papery skins will tighten around the onion.
• When the necks are moisture free and completely tight and dry the stem should slip off easily.
• Store cured onions in a dry, cool place.
Store sweet onions for up to 3 months. Other types of onions store longer, depending on storage conditions. Check stored onions occasionally for soft spots or decay. Remove affected onions.

Why add MULCH?
Adding mulch means more good things will happen in your soil. Increased moisture, fewer temperature fluctuations, and more organic matter lead to more worm activity and beneficial soil microorganisms. That means healthier soil and plants.
• Mulching your garden helps slow evaporation: A thick mulch layer means less moisture is lost through evaporation. You can then water less frequently, saving money and time!
• Helps regulate soil temperature: Hot soil is hard on plants. Mulch keeps the sun off the soil, so the soil stays cooler. Thick mulch helps insulate it even more. Higher soil temperatures slow plant growth, and mulch moderates that temperature. Mulch shades the soil from the sun’s direct rays causing less temperature variation.
• Mulching your garden helps prevent and control weeds: Mulching blocks the sunlight needed for weeds to germinate and often smothers existing weeds.
• Mulching adds organic matter to your garden: When you add natural mulch in the form of bark, straw, or compost, they are incorporated into the soil and add nutrients and organic matter.
The best mulch is what you have available or free. Check my YouTube or blog for more details about adding mulch to your garden. https://growinginthegarden.com/mulching-your-garden-what-to-use-how-to-use-it/

Three Sisters GROW BAG Garden
I planted a "Three Sisters Garden" in grow bags with oyas.
A Three Sisters Garden is a traditional Native American agricultural method where corn, beans, and squash are grown together. By planting them together, each plant supports the others and maximizes your space.
I'm taking it one step further by adding an Oya (or Olla), which is a traditional unglazed clay pot used for irrigation. This ancient technique was used by indigenous communities in Mexico and the Southwest US. The Oya releases water slowly and directly to the roots of the plants, reducing water usage and promoting healthy growth. 🌞
This method is perfect for those with limited space or poor soil quality. I'm excited to see how my Three Sisters Garden with Oyas grows this season, and I can't wait to enjoy the delicious harvest!
I filled the bags with the Raised Bed Mix from @arizonawormfarm - it's perfect for raised beds or containers.

Easiest Way to Make SWEET POTATO SLIPS
This year I experimented with starting sweet potato slips directly in the garden bed. It worked!
You have to wait until the soil warms up in the spring, so it may not work as well in cooler climates.
This was definitely the easiest way yet to get these slips started and ready to plant.

What does a FLOWER STALK on your ONION mean?
The wild weather this winter and early spring means that most of my onions formed flower stalks or are “bolting” this year.
When onions bolt, the bulb part of the onion stops growing and will not mature further. The energy that would make the onion bulb is now directed toward making the flower stalk.
Onions bolt prematurely in response to stress. Stress can happen in several ways; too hot, too cold, not enough water, or too much water. Temperature fluctuations can cause onions to bolt as well.
Here’s what to do:
• Harvest and use right away or preserve by dehydrating, freezing, or freeze drying. The onions won’t store well.
• Cut off the flower on top, or cut the entire bolting stem, so the onion stops producing seeds. (This won’t restart bulb growth.)
• You can leave the onion in the ground for a few weeks. The onion won’t continue bulbing or get any larger, but it will “keep” in the ground and can be used later.
• Leave a couple of bolting onions to flower until they produce seeds. Save the seeds to plant next season.
Are any of your onions bolting this year?
