Growing in The Garden

It's garlic planting time in many areas including the low desert of Arizona. Garlic is usually planted in the fall — from September through November. Plant garlic about a month before the soil freezes in cold climates. The best time to plant garlic in the low desert of Arizona is during the month of October. • Break apart the bulbs, and soak in a solution of fish and kelp fertilizer and baking soda (1 T of each per gallon of water) for at least 8 and up to 24 hours. • The baking soda has antibacterial benefits and the fertilizer stimulates growth. • Plant with the flat side (roots) facing down and the pointy side (sprouting side) facing up. • Plant cloves 2-3” deep and 4-6” apart. For square foot gardening, plant 9 per square. The roselle hibiscus planted back in March is yielding fruit (lots of it!) and we are enjoying every bit. Harvest roselle about7-10 days after it blooms andthe pointy red calyx around the seed pod is just over an inch wide.The seed pod is fully grown but still tender.To avoid damage to the branch it’s best toremove the calyx with clippers. Harvesting roselle calyces early and oftenincreases the overall yield of the plant.We love drying it for tea and making jam - roselle is also finding its way into other recipes. In-bed vermicomposting(the white buckets in my beds). I've had these buckets in my beds for over a year and a halfand I can't imagine gardening any other way.⁣ The worm castings they produce are garden gold and help your garden in so many ways. During the hot summer here in Arizona the worms burrow down to stay cool in the beds. I keep adding food scraps to my buckets over the summer and the heat breaks them down, leaving behind compost (not castings). Now that temperatures are cooling off the worms are ready to get back to work! It's a great time to refresh your bins (or add them to your beds). Whiteflies. They are especially bad this year. Here's what I'm doing to deal with whiteflies this season. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣Always try the least invasive method first - progressing to more invasive methods only if needed:⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣•Do nothing. Really - if the numbers are low, do nothing. Observe. Spend time in your garden each day. If the plant is stressed or nearing the end of the season it may be time to pull the plant.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣•Remove infested leaves - if a few leaves are covered, remove and disposeof those leaves.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣•Yellow sticky traps - If there is a severe infestation, hang up sticky traps and replace often if needed.Use with caution and only for a shortperiod of time to get numbers under control.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣• Insecticidal soap - If you are still seeing large numbers of whiteflies, spray both sides of the leaves of infected plants. Wait a few minutes and then spray off afterwards with water.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣• Repeat as needed - You should see numbers decrease significantly after followingthese steps. Carrot seeds often take 10 days to germinate. It's tricky to keep them from drying out, especially when it's hot outside. I love using burlap to help carrot seeds germinate. • The burlap holds in moisture, and the carrot seeds germinate under the burlap. • When seedlings pop up, remove the burlap. • Two weeks after the plants germinate, thin any carrots that touch each other. (Use scissors to cut off plants to be thinned rather than pulling them by hand.)⁣ • In another 2 weeks, thin carrots to 2 or 3 inches apart.
