Eyes On Butte County, CA

Appearing before Sonoma County Board of Supervisors (BOS) on February 25, 2025, was my 24th in-person BOS appearance. Because California has 58 county BOS, I have 34 more to go. Unfortunately County of Sonoma limits public participation. The County Administrator’s Office announced on September 28, 2023, that members of the public who wish to address the Board during meetings must attend in-person, I just learned. “The change is due to the escalating challenges of maintaining civility among those who participate in the Public Comment portion of the Board meeting via Zoom,” the County Administrator’s Office stated. Thus far, Sonoma County is the only county I have encountered during my stop the COVID-19 shots mission which limits public participation. Thus Julie Butte, who is COVID-19 vaccine injured and watched the Board meeting via Zoom from Butte County, was unable to comment. Limiting public participation in a Constitutional Republic is not a good thing.

In a discussion with a Shasta County Board of Supervisors (BOS) member on whether to appoint a First 5 Shasta candidate, Supervisor Kevin Crye said a former California Department of Public Health employee has set the standard of warning people about the dangers of COVID-19 vaccines. “Ronald Owens, the guy we saw in here [on December 19, 2024] that wouldn't work for Sacramento Public Health anymore, quit his job and travels the state on his motorcycle,” said Supervisor Crye. “That's, that's the bar of what we do to go to those lengths [to warn the public].” “And that accomplishes nothing in terms of local policy,” Supervisor Matt Plummer retorted toward the end of the February 25, 2025, more than ten hour BOS meeting. “I'll tell you what, for that one kid that didn't get vaccinated who now can play high school football because they don't have heart issues —matters to that kid, matters to that kid,” Crye countered. The BOS denied, in a three to two vote, Robin Schurig from serving “the remainder of a three-year term to January 2028” on the Shasta Children and Families Commission (aka First 5 Shasta), according to the C8 meeting agenda item. Shasta County, located in Northern California, has about 180,000 residents. First 5 Shasta directs “parents, family members, and caregivers to the resources they need to improve the early health, development and learning of children ages 0-5,” according to the public organizations website.

I was proud of my 3 minute comment today! Changed it up a bit. First, they never get my name right! I wrote clearly THREET. The Clerk mispronounced it, not unusual. BUT the "Live" taping system thought she said "FREED"!! And typed it on the TV feed! Hey, maybe I will be FREED. Also, there was a young man who I met at the Sutter County Supervisors meeting named Tony. He is very kind and seems to go to these two meetings to say "thank you" to every person he likes. I venture to guess he is a bit developmentally disabled but involved in his community. When he gave his public comment today, he personally named officials he wanted to thank. He turned to look at the audience and looked me in the eye saying "thank you lady from Chico"! So adorable he remembered me from Sutter.
