Jesus vs. the Witch Doctor - Onesmus Ngoboka
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
Would you choose to follow Jesus even if it meant being rejected by your culture, disowned by your family, and cut off from all financial support? Kevin's guest this week, Onesmus Ngoboka, had to make that choice—when he was only 14 years old. In this episode, Onesmus shares his incredible testimony and discusses what his ministry is doing to spread the gospel to the fringes of society in Uganda.
Onesmus was technically brought up in the church, but in his village, even churchgoers looked to the local witch doctor rather than God to solve their problems. At age 12 he had a troubling dream in which God showed him that despite his nominal Christian faith, he was headed for hell. Onesmus realized that he needed a personal relationship with Jesus, something his church had never emphasized. He decided to obey the call of God, but soon this choice cost him everything he had, including his family. With no one else to rely on, he fully placed his trust in God, and in turn, God provided for him over and over again.
Thanks to God's providence, Onesmus was given the opportunity to attend graduate school in the United States. Now he is returning to Uganda with a Masters in Divinity and an MA in Christian Ministry to train pastors and equip the church. He works with Uganda Ministries (a non-profit organization he co-founded) to support rural churches, provide Christian schooling for children, give aid to orphans, and even broadcast a Christian radio program that reaches millions of listeners. You can learn more about what his ministry is doing at http://UgandaMinistries.org. Whether through prayer or pledges, please consider offering your support to this worthy effort!

Why Atheism Can't Explain Reality - Dr. Andy McIntosh and Eric Hovind
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
Kevin recently moderated a debate between Jeff Archer (president of the Atheist Coalition of San Diego) and Dr. Andy McIntosh that focused on the question: Can an atheistic worldview make sense of reality? In the previous episode he talked to Jeff Archer about why he thinks the answer is yes; this time he talks to Dr. Andy McIntosh about why it is most definitely a "no." Eric Hovind of Creation Today is also present to weigh in on some of the issues.
Kevin, Andy, and Eric discuss why it is impossible for the universe as we know it to exist without God. They respond to a variety of arguments that atheists commonly use, including (but not limited to): life could increase in complexity without breaking down because the earth is an open system with energy coming in; the existence of intelligence doesn't require God, because humans are just a complex AI; crystals are an example of a natural increase of complexity apart from intelligence; and lastly, creationists aren't real scientists because they never make any scientific predictions that lead to valuable research or discovery. Listen to the full episode to hear why each of these assertions is incorrect, as well as other evidence that supports theism and refutes atheism.
You can learn more about Dr. Andy McIntosh at http://www.AndyMcIntosh.org and http://www.TruthAndScience.org. Eric and his work with Creation Today can be found at http://www.CreationToday.org and http://www.Youtube.com/user/CreationToday.

An Atheist Explains Reality - Jeff Archer
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
Whether they know it or not, every person possesses a worldview. This is a set of broad principles that guides their perception of reality, informing them of what exists and what doesn't, what is possible and what is not. As human knowledge has advanced over the past few centuries, so has the idea that observational science can explain the whole of reality, physical stuff is all there is, and there is no spiritual realm. This philosophical naturalism is a key component of atheism, a denial of the existence of any sort of god.
But does this view do an adequate job of explaining the whole of human knowledge and experience? On September 29th, Kevin is moderating a debate between a Christian (Dr. Andy McIntosh) and an atheist (Jeff Archer) on whether an atheistic worldview can make sense of reality. In the weeks preceding the debate, he is interviewing each participant in turn about why they hold the position they do. In this first of the two interviews, he speaks with Jeff Archer about why he believes atheism explains all of reality without any need to refer to the supernatural. They discuss topics such as whether religion is necessary for moral living, and whether the complexity of life suggests intelligent design.
Jeff Archer is the long-standing president of the Atheist Coalition of San Diego, author of multiple books, and an experienced public debater. You can learn more about him and the Atheist Coalition by visiting AtheistCoalition.org.

Is Racism Really The Biggest Problem For Blacks?
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
It's in the news almost every day. Another white police officer has shot another young black man. People march through the streets crying for justice. Some even riot, loot, and call for the death of cops in retaliation. They are followed by politicians who take a tragic situation and use it for their own political benefit. This is the tangled mess that is racism in America.
But is racism the real issue or is there a root cause that needs to be dealt with? Is racism alive and well in America? Join Kevin Conover as he discusses this important issue with three special guests. Glen McKinney, Theo Goodwin (aka Protege), and Daniel Wigginton are three African American men who have experienced the reality of racism in America. They will reveal how deep the problem goes and practical steps that everyone can take to help solve the issue.
They will also discuss the role that the church has to play. For far too long the church has been asleep at the wheel. Sadly, the church has largely remained silent and has failed to reach out to people and teach them what the Bible has to say on this important issue. As a result, the younger generation has largely lost interest in attending church and learning what Jesus had to say about racism. You do not want to miss this show. Listen in as two generations of black and white men come together in a spirit of unity to try to begin to heal the racial divide.
There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. -Galatians 3:28

Highlight: Democratic Socialism vs Democratic Republic
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
Quick! What type of government does the United States have? Would it shock you to know that we don't have a democracy? In fact many of our founding fathers and early presidents abhorred democratic government. James Madison once said, "Democracy is the most vile form of government. ... democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property: and have in general been as short in their lives as the have been violent in their deaths."
However, the founding fathers realized that certain properties of democracy would benefit America which is why they framed the United States as a democratic republic. They also recognized that a democratic republic would only be stable as long as God was at the center.
Today's political atmosphere has shifted. Democratic socialism has become popular to some and to others it is still a taboo. Join Kevin Conover to dissect these often confusing political terms. What is democratic socialism and is it something to be feared? If we allow it in American are we opening the door to communism and ultimately fascism. Is this issue being blown out of proportion? Tune in and listen to Kevin break it down and explain why it's so important to keep God at the center of our government.

A World Etched by Water - John Baumgardner
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
You probably wouldn’t expect a committed evolutionist with a secular upbringing, who earned multiple graduate degrees in the hard sciences from prestigious universities, to end up being one of the world’s leading creation scientists. But that’s exactly what happened with Dr. John Baumgardner of the Logos Research Associates, the foremost expert on Noah’s Flood and its significance to Earth’s geology.
After completing his BS in electrical engineering at Texas Tech and MS in electrical engineering from Princeton, John began work on his PhD. Some other students invited him to a Bible study that was covering the gospel of John, and despite his secular background he soon found himself face to face with Jesus. John gave his life to the Lord, and then had to determine how to best use his life for the Lord, while using his scientific training and also fulfilling his prior commitment to the U. S. Air Force. John talks with Kevin about his subsequent journey from witnessing with Campus Crusade for Christ, to earning more graduate degrees at UCLA, to creating the world’s greatest geologic modeling software, to developing anti-missile lasers for the Star Wars program at Los Alamos National Laboratory, to leading the Carbon-14 research with the RATE project, to joining the Logos Research Associates. He also shares some of the many evidences he has discovered as to why it was a global flood, not uniformitarian processes, that shaped the earth’s geologic features into what they are today.
You can learn more about John’s work with the Logos Research Associates, including how to get involved, at LogosResearchAssociates.org. You can find out more about the results of the RATE project (which set out to evaluate the alleged evidence for an old earth from radioisotopes) in the popular book Thousands, Not Billions, or the more technical volume Radioisotopes and the Age of the Earth, available from many book sellers.

From Bondage to Victory - Patti Height
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
The issue of homosexuality is a hot button topic in today's society. For Christians, it is even more so. In regards to the LGBT community, Christians and the church are often seen as bigoted, hypocritical, unloving, and uncaring. But is there a way for the church to change this perception and come alongside this community to minister to them and love them?
Guest Patti Height believes there is. She has founded Out of Egypt Ministries to help churches accomplish this goal. Out of Egypt is a non-profit ministry that is dedicated to speaking forth the truth of God’s Word to a generation that has been enslaved by lies. Patti Height knows the destructive bondage that comes as a result of believing and living under this deception and began this ministry with a desire to help others find the same peace and healing she found, through faith in Jesus Christ. As a teen, Patti turned to alcohol and drugs and later entered into the world of homosexuality. For many years she believed the lie that there was no hope for change, and her life spiraled down as a result. Today, Patti’s life is a testimony to the transforming power of God and the truth of His Word. In 2003, she was set free from the bondage of addiction and homosexuality and is now committed to sharing with others the hope and freedom she found in the Gospel.

Drug Addicts Break Free - Herlindo Salinas and Mike Conway
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
"Once a junkie, always a junkie." That's what Herlindo had been told, and that's what he believed about himself. However, even 16 years into his heroin addiction his mother told him something different: "Son, I know that someday you are going to change. I am praying for you." Today Herlindo is San Diego County's Director of Teen Challenge, the very organization that helped him turn his life around in 1990.
In this episode, Kevin talks to Herlindo and his assistant director Mike about the impact that Teen Challenge has had on their lives and the lives of countless others. The ministry was started by David Wilkinson (author of The Cross and the Switchblade) in 1960, and it is still helping teens and adults step out of drug addiction today. Teen Challenge is not a rehab center and does not just teach behavior modification. Instead, it takes those whose lives have been destroyed by drug addiction and introduces them to the one person who can actually help: Jesus Christ.
Learn more by visiting TeenChallenge.org(/SDTC for San Diego). You can help Teen Challenge help others by praying for them, donating to the organization at GiveTC.com, and getting involved in Teen Challenge events such as the San Diego Walk for Recovery on September 24th (TCWalks.com)

Can Sexual Addiction be Conquered? - Joe Dallas
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
This week Kevin continues to examine the tough issue of sexuality by talking with Joe Dallas, an expert on sexual addiction and homosexuality. Dallas is an author, conference speaker, and ordained pastoral counselor. His writings have been featured in both Christian and secular media (such as The Christian Research Journal and The Los Angeles Times), and he has made appearances on a variety of television programs (ABC Evening News, The Joan Rivers Show, and others). Joe has a Masters Degree in Christian counseling and is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors. He is the program director of Genesis Biblical Counseling, a ministry that helps men deal with sexual addiction.
Joe’s life is a fascinating story that makes him uniquely qualified to speak on issues of sexual identity. In his youth he experienced attraction to both men and women, and lived a promiscuous bisexual lifestyle before becoming a Christian. Even after he came to God, it took Joe years to leave his lifestyle behind. From 1978-1984 he worked at a pro-gay church, was a homosexual activist, and believed that homosexuality and Christianity are compatible. A change occurred when he realized that he wasn’t really listening to what the Bible had to say about the issue, but was projecting his own opinions onto it. In order to truly start following God’s leading, he moved to a new city and got involved in a Bible-believing church. After accepting the truth about his lifestyle Joe took a huge step of faith: regardless of what sort of feelings and attractions he would have in the future, regardless of whether he would ever have another relationship, and regardless of whether he would ever marry or have a family, Joe decided to submit his sexuality to God and stop practicing the homosexual lifestyle.
After living in obedience to God, Joe was fortunate enough to meet a woman he was attracted to, and she became his wife. However, Joe acknowledges that not all people with homosexual attraction will have the same experience; others turn to God and never have a change in their attractions. As Kevin and Joe discuss the issue of sexual identity, a central idea emerges: each person’s sexual desires and experiences are different, but anyone can choose to honor God through their lifestyle and behavior. Joe shares his perspectives on a variety of related issues, such as how Christian parents should react if their child comes out as homosexual, and what the church should do to reach out to homosexual communities. Through it all, Joe shows that shows that God is loving, and because of this he calls us to be holy. Though sexuality is complex, it can also be manageable, even after one has fallen into addiction.
Visit Joe’s website at JoeDallas.com for more info on the counseling resources and services he has to offer.

Does Scripture Support Slavery?
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
Slavery is undoubtedly one of humanity's ugliest inventions, yet it is found within the pages of Scripture in both the Old and New Testaments. Many people, from plantation owners to secular humanists to President Barack Obama, have alleged that the Bible explicitly supports this dehumanizing institution. How should Christians respond to such an accusation?
This week Kevin looks at data both inside and outside the Bible to cast some light on the issue. What is the connection between slavery and finances, and what does this mean for modern-day America? When the Bible refers to slavery, does it mean the same sort of thing that occurred in America before the civil war? Does the New Testament affirm that slavery is OK?
Kevin examines specific laws God gave to Israel concerning slavery and compares them with surrounding nations of the time, revealing God's intention to make this ubiquitous practice far more humane. Then he examines references to slavery in the New Testament, including Paul's personal appeal to a slave owner in his letter to Philemon. Throughout this episode it is made clear that God is not a cause of slavery; He is the one who sets captives free.

Join the Covenant Against Porn - Luke Gilkerson
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
One of the most dreaded responsibilities of any parent is that of talking to their child about sex. Aside from the general awkwardness of the topic, it feels as though bringing it up will spoil a child's innocence. However, if parents aren't proactive in teaching their children a biblical perspective on human sexuality, the world will be all too eager to fill their heads with harmful misinformation. And with children having more and more internet access from increasingly younger ages, they will almost certainly be exposed to the worst teacher of all: internet pornography.
This week Kevin talks to Luke Gilkerson, a Christian author, co-founder (with his wife) of the family website IntoxicatedOnLife.com, and an 8-year employee of Covenant Eyes. Luke is all too aware of the dangers of pornography: he was addicted to it for years. After countless attempts (many halfhearted) to give up porn left him believing he could never truly change, Luke was finally able to escape its clutches with the help of a godly mentor who believed in him. A few years later he connected with Covenant Eyes through his wife's church and spent the next 8 years helping them achieve their mission.
Covenant Eyes is an internet accountability and content filtering service. It was created both to protect children and adults from viewing internet pornography, but just as importantly, to start dialogues within families about internet usage and Christian values. Visit CovenantEyes.com to see how their software can benefit your family! And at Luke's website, IntoxicatedOnLife.com, you can find a variety of helpful resources, including tools to help you discuss the important issue of sexuality with your children.

Evil: Whose Problem?
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
This week Kevin examines one of the oldest objections to theism, dating to even before Jesus walked the earth: the problem of suffering (aka. the problem of evil, the problem of pain, etc.). The ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus argued, if there were a righteous and all-powerful God, he would not allow evil to exist. Yet evil does exist. Therefore a righteous, all-powerful God does not. Case closed, right?
But perhaps Epicurus' argument raises more questions than it answers. What is evil? Is it an absolute quality, and if so, what defines it? Can we really know for sure what a righteous and all-powerful God would or wouldn't allow? Kevin takes a look at the questions raised by Epicurus' challenge, as well as the basis for morality and reasons to believe God exists. As Josh McDowell stated, "Don't allow the unexplainable to keep you from the undeniable."
Though the reality of suffering can be hard to deal with, the Christian worldview can explain why both good and evil exist. Can atheism?

Alpha: a First Step to Faith - Dana Kloo and Chris Gaudi
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
Have you ever wished you could introduce a friend or relative to the basic concepts of Christianity in a welcoming environment that's less intimidating than a church service? The Alpha program was created to provide just such an opportunity. In this episode, Kevin talks to Dana Kloo and Chris Gaudi, two people who have seen countless lives (including their own) benefit from the program.
So many people are unbelievers not because they have thoughtfully rejected the gospel, but because they never understood it to begin with. Inviting people to church is a great way to introduce them to the faith, but some may not be comfortable accepting the invitation, whether due to bad past experiences or a general aversion to church. That's where Alpha comes in.
Alpha is an engaging, low-pressure Bible study program that is geared towards people who are totally new to faith. It is totally free and open to anyone who wants to know more about Christianity, from open-minded spiritual seekers to members of other faiths. Alpha is all about creating a welcoming environment in which participants can be comfortable learning about God. The program meets one night a week for ten weeks. Each meeting starts with a free dinner and time of fellowship, then transitions into an informational talk, followed by small group discussions. This system fosters the building of relationships and allows for every voice to be heard as friends learn alongside each other.
There are already thousands of churches running Alpha! You can find a group near you at AlphaUSA.org. Or you can learn about what it takes to start your own Alpha group!

Giving Salt Its Flavor Back - Dran Reese
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
If all Christians share a biblically-based worldview, how can they disagree so strongly on every major political issue? Kevin discusses this question with his guest Dran Reese, founder of the Salt and Light Council. Being a faithful Christian may not require that you belong to a certain political party, but it should lead you to vote in a way consistent with Christian values. Sadly, many Christians are unable to do so because they don't even have a good idea of what a biblical worldview is! Because of this, the church is failing to fulfill its duty as the salt of the earth. We are losing our unique flavor as the people of God and assimilating into a bland, worldly culture that's turning further and further away from Him.
That is why Dran Reese created the Salt and Light Council, a ministry that trains Christians all across the country to apply a biblical worldview to culture and politics. The Salt and Light Council provides programming that can be used in any church, with minimal burden on already overworked head pastors and senior leadership. All it takes is a few individuals who are willing to lead a group of fellow Christians in following the clear plan that SLC lays out.
Kevin and Dran talk about why she started SLC and how their program works. They also discuss why it is so important for Christian citizens to be salt and light by actively engaging in real world issues, rather than sitting idly by while the world becomes dim and flavorless.

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” –Matthew 5:13-14

What Would Change a Skeptic's Mind? - Jay Seegert and Sean Taylor
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
Knowing what you believe is a good start, but having good reasons why you believe it is the real challenge. A great way to give your faith the acid test is to converse with a knowledgeable person from an opposing worldview. This week Kevin facilitates just such a dialogue between Christian apologist Jay Seegert (author of Creation & Evolution: Compatible or In Conflict?), and returning guest Sean Taylor (of the Humanist Fellowship of San Diego).
Throughout the episode, Jay explains different reasons why he believes in God, and Sean offers his own counter-perspective. The two discuss many fascinating questions of faith and reason, such as: does evidence speak for itself or do our presuppositions determine our beliefs? Could using DNA as evidence for God be just as misguided as when ancient people used thunder and lightning? Must a rational person withhold judgment on the God question, or is there justification for choosing a side? And perhaps most interestingly, if skeptics base their views on the evidence, what sort of evidence would persuade them to change their minds about God?
To see more of Jay Seegert's apologetics resources, check out his book Creation & Evolution or visit his website at http://www.CECWISC.org.

Finding [un]Common Ground - Steve Fink
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
What do a conservative Christian Republican and a religiously-unaffiliated Democrat have in common when it comes to divisive political issues? More than you might think. This week Kevin talks with Steve Fink, who for the past 15 years has been a "None"—someone who answers "none" to the survey question "what is your religious affiliation?". Steve is certainly not alone in America, where Nones have been on the rise for quite some time. According to the Pew Research Center, Nones were the single category in religious affiliation surveys with the most growth between 2007 and 2014, going from 12.1% to 15.8% (+3.7). In the same period, those identifying as any type of Christian decreased from 78.4% to 70.6% (-7.8).
Steve grew up in a conservative Christian home, and even worked as a youth pastor for a time as a young man. He then spent years living abroad in Mexico and Japan, and as he met more and more good people of different faiths, he ceased to identify with Christian exclusivism. Though he has not returned to the faith since, he still has a positive view of the church and feels that he and his Christian friends have much in common. For this reason, Steve reached out to Skyline Church in El Cajon (where Kevin attends) seeking to form some sort of cooperative effort to find what people of different religious affiliations can have in common.
Kevin and Steve compare perspectives on a wide variety of political issues, from same-sex marriage, to gun ownership and regulation, to the refugee crisis. Though they disagree on some of the details, you may be surprised by just how easy it is for them to find common ground. This episode offers a pattern for bridging the gap between people of different religious or political affiliations!

How To Save Your Marriage - Hobby Howard
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
From God's first acknowledgment that it is not good for man to be alone, the Bible affirms the importance of marriage through and through. If Christians look to God's word to understand His plan for marriage, they will be able to experience the true joy of having a God-honoring relationship with their spouse. This week Kevin's guest is Hobby Howard, who has been on staff with Family Life for 20 years. Hobby is a ministry representative for Family Life's Weekend to Remember marriage conference. Weekend to Remember can equip any couple, whether their marriage is going strong or falling apart, with knowledge and tools to strengthen their bond. It has brought many struggling couples back from the brink of divorce, and in some remarkable cases (as Hobby explains) even brought already divorced couples back into a strong marriage bond!
What is so special about this conference? Even though marriage is the cornerstone of society, we spend little time throughout our lives learning what it takes to make a marriage succeed. And even though we invest time, money, and effort into upkeep for all sorts of other things (like cars, houses, and jobs), we often fail to invest in maintaining a strong marital relationship. Weekend to Remember shows couples the often overlooked biblical blueprint for marriage, which puts God at the center and replaces human conditional acceptance with divine unconditional love. This foundation also provides all kinds of practical knowledge on critical topics, such as methods to improve communication, different roles filled by each spouse, how to "fight" the right way, and so many other areas.
Statistics show that fewer and fewer young people are interested in marriage. There are a variety of reasons for this, but one is certain that they have never had a good role model of marriage in their lives. It is up to the married couples of today to prevent the decay of marriage by doing the hard work of maintaining a strong, healthy relationship, and refusing to split up even when things get tough.

Church and State: Just How Separate? - Frank Kacer
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
Can a biologically male transgender student be denied access to facilities intended only for girls? Can a public high school football coach pray on the field after games? Can a Christian photographer or baker decline to provide services for a homosexual wedding? Questions like these now arise with increasing frequency, and underlying all of them is the issue of separation of church and state.
This week Kevin talks with Frank Kacer, an expert on the relationship between politics and religion. Frank is a pastor and elder at Grace Bible Church in Escondido, a long-time Christian activist, the author of over 150 columns and op-eds on Biblical politics, and also a trained physicist! He is the founder of the Christian Statesman Internship Program, which he designed to transform believers into biblically based, politically conscious leaders of society.
Kevin and Frank talk in depth about the ubiquitous concept of separation of church and state. If these two bodies must remain totally separate, then how should Christians participate in politics? Is it really wrong to legislate morality? Frank explains that government is a morally neutral tool of society that can be used for good or evil. Because the government is so active in our lives, there is no hope of completely avoiding political issues. Instead we must know how to engage them faithfully, intelligently, and effectively.
Our government asks its citizens, who should be in charge and what laws should be enforced? If the Christians of America do not respond, others certainly will; and we might not like their answer.
"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? ... You are the light of the world... let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." — Matthew 5:13-16.

Kevin Conover preaches at Skyline: A Future and a Hope
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
Who or what reigns as king over your life? Yourself? Family? Prosperity? Security? If the answer is anything other than Jesus Christ, then you have a problem. In this sermon, Kevin takes a look at the history of Israel in the Old Testament to show what happens when humans try to live apart from God rather than with Him. We all have a choice to make: we can pursue a comfortable life at the expense of serving God, or we can serve God at the expense of our immediate comfort. Which will you choose?
Kevin Conover delivered this message at Skyline Church in La Mesa, CA, on August 9th, 2015.

God and Neurosurgery Part 2 - Dr. David Levy
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
Kevin speaks once again with Dr. David Levy, neurosurgeon, and author of Gray Matter. This week Dr. Levy shares more of his professional and personal insights into the human brain, taking a deeper look at some of the mind's quirks and how to stay mentally healthy.
Have you ever wondered why you always feel a little better when there's some sort of background noise, whether it's the radio on the way to work or the TV when you're home alone? Have you ever felt that there must be something wrong with you since you always dwell more on the negatives of life more than the positive? Do you find that you are compassionate towards others when they make mistakes, yet extremely hard on yourself when you do? If you can relate to any of these, you are certainly not alone. Dr. Levy talks about how these and other psychological phenomena are typical of humans, yet can present serious threats to our relationships with both God and our fellow man. He presents a plan of action to restore a proper frame of mind, by taking breaks from electronic distractions and meditating on the Word of God. Both the Bible and modern science testify that the things we put into our brain, and the ideas to which we choose to devote precious attention, will have a tremendous impact on our psychological, spiritual, and even physical health.

God and Neurosurgery Part 1 - Dr. David Levy
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
The thought of “combining medicine and spirituality” may cause you to picture medieval doctors drilling holes in a patient’s skull to let the demons out, or some other barbaric practice of history. Yet Dr. David Levy, renowned neurosurgeon and UCSD professor, has been integrating his faith into his medical practice for years with great success. How? By simply offering to pray with his patients before surgeries.
In this first part of a two-part series Kevin talks with Dr. Levy about his personal history, including how he entered the field of neurosurgery and what inspired him to start praying with patients. Dr. Levy’s life has been an incredible journey, from his childhood of indifference towards God and church, to his days as an underachieving gas-station-attendant high-school student, to his becoming a highly skilled and successful (yet relationally challenged) neurosurgeon. He describes how several extremely difficult life circumstances forced him to recognize both his inadequate definition of the meaning of life, and his inability to love others selflessly. Fortunately, a conversation with his mother turned him towards the source of both meaning and love: Jesus Christ. Dr. Levy shares how he got from the point of first having personal faith, to applying that faith to his profession.

Seeing Christ through Cancer - Jason Lyon
Join our team, get educated, make a difference. http://join.educateforlife.org
One of the greatest objections to the existence of an all-powerful, supremely loving God is: why is there so much suffering in the world? This is a serious question on a philosophical level, but it takes on a whole new significance when tragedy strikes close to home. How can we find meaning in suffering? Can something so negative be a blessing in any way?
This week Kevin talks to several of his own students (as well as the principal) from Christian High School, where he teaches apologetics. In particular he speaks with his former student Jason Lyon, who will soon be entering his senior year—and who was recently diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer. The question of suffering is no longer abstract to Jason and his friends, who must constantly face the fact that they do not know how much longer he has on this earth.
One might expect a young man in Jason’s circumstances to be racked with fear, anxiety, and maybe even hatred towards God for allowing such a thing to happen to him. As Job’s wife said when he hit rock bottom, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!” (Job 2:9) Yet Jason does not curse God; he has even called his experience a privilege. Why? Because his condition has brought him closer to God than he has ever been, and allowed him to have more of a positive spiritual impact on those around him than he ever has. Facing the mortal threat of cancer has shown Jason just how fully he needs God at every moment, and taught him to value what is really important.
Jason shares the perspective and insight that he has gained since his diagnosis, as well as the challenges he faces. His positive attitude is truly inspirational (which his friends and principal attest to), and he states that it is only possible because of his close relationship with Jesus Christ. Speaking as one with authority on the subject, Jason testifies that physical suffering, even to a great degree, is worth it if it brings a single person closer to God. Let those of us who aren’t in as difficult a situation learn from his experience, choose God above all else, and make the best use we can of the amazing gift of life God has given us!
If you would like to help Jason’s family cover his medical costs and give him the best shot possible at overcoming his illness, you can visit their GoFundMe page (http://www.gofundme.com/lyonhearted). Even more importantly, please support them in your prayers!
