Sailing sv Little Bear

I ordered and received some very high-end wood pieces that will be crafted into the bits that were rotted off the boat

With the boomkin & bowsprit off the boat, it's now time to remove the hardware from those bits of wood. This is the video where I discover the extent of the rot on the bowsprit - SCARY!

I wasn't happy with the amount of weight I had on the bottom to secure my mooring buoy. The total was about 400 lbs. I decided to crank it up to over 1000 lbs. This vid is the record of that project.

The hull-deck joint of a WS32 is notorious for leaks. After removing the cap rail I go about sealing the joint.

This is the last bit of wood that needs to be replaced on the boat. The part of the posts below deck was fine, but the section above deck was old, cracked, checked, and weak. Time to go.

In order to remove the aft sections of the cap rail the boom gallows must come off...

The wood of the rudder cheeks is rotten, so off they come. Down with cheeky bits!

By this time I have sanded & stripped the hull below the waterline.

The purchase of s/v Little Bear has been completed. It's time to take possession!

Time to start the refit of s/v Little Bear. In order to do that I need to get her up on the hard - it's haul out time.

After purchasing the boat, it took about 3 months to get things ready and for a nice weather window and a good tide to bring the boat home. This vid is a record of our sail from Pender Island back to Nicomekl river.

After buying the boat I need to move her to her new home. Before taking off across the straight, we need to do a bit of a shake down to see how she'll fare.

A bow sprit is a pretty narrow chunk of wood to be walking on when at sea. Therefore, it is a very good idea to have a platform attached to the sprit on which to stand. In this vid I begin to create a solution to that end.

I am working with North Sails for my new suite of sails. But I thought I would get them to have a look at my old sails to see if they're salvageable. Come along for the ride...

Installing zinc on the prop-shaft isn't as easy as it looks. The old speed log is smaller than the new one, so once again I have to drill a hold in my boat!

The weather and scheduling is messing with my refit plans but there's always something to do on board the boat. This time it's zincs that need replacing and the old speed log.

Now that the mast project is behind us, it's time to turn our attention to the boom. It gets painted, new running rigging and a few bits of hardware.

As far as I'm concerned, Cape Horn windvane is far and away the best windvane on the market. Simple, light, effective upwind, downwind, light wind, heavy wind. It's been tested and proven on all the major oceans of the world. I've never seen a bad comment about them. The port / starboard lights finally showed up so all lights are wired and lit. This means that the mast can now go up!
