A Russian missile hit a food shop in the northeastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv and killed at least 48 people, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on the Telegram messaging app. The death toll was later increased to at least 50 people.
"The brutal Russian crime of hitting an ordinary grocery store with a rocket is a completely deliberate terrorist attack," Zelensky added.
It is one of the deadliest strikes in recent months that came as Zelenskyy attended a summit of European leaders in Spain to drum up support from the country's allies.

Will China stop Russia's war in Ukraine- - Global Eyes
Global Eyes: Security policy and what it means for you
Chinese President Xi Jinping has promised a "no limits" friendship with Russia. Beijing has refused to condemn Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. What are China's red lines in the conflict?
Global Eyes, DW's new take on security policy, looks at China's recent efforts to mediate. Xi Jinping may have vowed "no limits" with Russia but he also dispatched a special envoy to Kyiv and has spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about Beijing's peace proposal, its number one point: respecting the sovereignty of all countries. Does Russian President Vladimir Putin get told that following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine? What does it even mean and how serious is Beijing about peacemaking?
This time on Global Eyes: China the peacemaker? Our guests: Ja Ian Chong of the National University of Singapore and Rohan Mukherjee of the London School of Economics.

What does the liberation of Robotyne mean for Ukraine's counter offensive- - DW News
#russia #ukraine #counteroffensive
After weeks of fighting, Ukrainian forces have broken through Russian defensive lines in the Zaporizhzhia region in the southeast to retake more territory.
On Monday, Kyiv's defense ministry announced it had fully reclaimed the village of Robotyne. South of Robotyne lies the strategic city of Tokmak, a critical railroad junction for the Russian military. Ukraine has been pushing to reach the Sea of Azov, in a grinding effort to cut Russian forces in half and severe the land bridge to Crimea. But Kyiv's advances have been slow as they push through Russia's heavily fortified positions and vast minefields.
Our special correspondent Aya Ibrahim is in Kyiv and tells us more.
And we talkt to Marina Miron of the War Studies department at King’s College London

US to train Ukrainian pilots in F16 jets as Wagner Group's future remains uncertain
#f16 #wagner #putin
In Russia, the Kremlin has described claims that it was involved Yevgeny Prigozhin's presumed death as - quote - "an absolute lie." This comes after President Vladimir Putin sent his condolences to his family, saying Prigozhin had made mistakes but achieved results. Russian authorities say the Wagner mercenary leader was listed as a passenger on a flight that crashed with no survivors. He had been one of Putin's most important allies - until June, when he led an armed rebellion against Moscow's military leadership.
The United States says it will train Ukrainian pilots to fly F16 fighters, after European countries pledged to give Kyiv the jets. The Pentagon said that flight training would begin in the US state of Arizona in October. Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway have all announced that they will provide Ukraine with the advanced US-made aircraft. Kyiv has long been seeking the jets to bolster its Soviet-era air force - but training will likely take several months.
Russia's presence in the African continent heavily depends on the Wagner Group. But now, after the possible death of the head of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, there is uncertainty about the private military's role. Many African countries depend on Russia for economic aid. Russia exerts its influence also through military cooperation. This often involves the Wagner Group. The mercenary group has been active in countries like Mali, Sudan, Libya, and Central African Republic. Wagner is also accused of political interference in these countries.

China has cut one of its key lending rates to spur the recovery of the world's second-largest economy. China's economy is still growing but at a slower rate than was previously expected, due to a worsening property slump, weak consumer spending and tumbling credit growth. The country's central bank has now cut its one-year loan prime rate while leaving some others untouched, surprising experts who had expected further-reaching measures. DW speaks to George Magnus of Oxford University’s China Center to find out more.

Zelenskyy in Sweden for talks, Putin meets with generals in Rostov-on-Don | Ukraine Update
#Ukraine #Russia #Sweden
Kyiv officials say a Russian airstrike has killed at least seven people in northern Ukraine. Among the dead is a six-year-old child. The country's interior minister said the missile attack also wounded dozens when it
hit the center of Chernihiv. People had been on their way to church to celebrate a religious holiday when the strike took place, the ministry said, adding 11 of the wounded were children. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike, saying it hit a theater and a University. Zelenskyy is in Sweden for talks with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. It's the first time he has traveled to Sweden since Russia invaded Ukraine, but Sweden was one of the first countries to offer Ukraine weapons.
And Russia's President Vladimir Putin has met his top generals in a rare trip to the southern military command in Rostov-on-Don. The Kremlin says Putin listened to briefings by the head of the armed forces.
