"Many families will lose thousands, to tens of thousands, of dollars when these handguns are confiscated. This is unacceptable. Many families will pay the price for crimes committed by others. The focus on legal handgun ownership as a way to reduce violent crimes with guns, is misguided. Legally owned guns firearms are not the cause of the increase in violent crime. NDP Safety critic Alistair MacGregor asked Marcell Wilson, founder of the grassroots One by One Movement in Toronto, about a legislative process suggested in Bill C-21 to allow anyone to anonymously report a person to a judge to have firearms removed from a home. The question surrounded around the issue of how authorities deal with a firearms owner who might be suffering from a mental health crisis, or considering self-harm or suicide. As Marcell succinctly explained to Alistair, dealing with mental health issues can't be focused on just the weapon. He said "A stronger focus on the illegal weapons that are circulating on our streets. A focus on our borders and investing there along with investing in grassroots communities so when we talk about this multi-focal approach, we are absolutely talking about investing in law enforcement, investing in grassroots, investing in our mental health service providers, investing in our education systems, and working collectively. A freeze on handgun sales in Canada comes into effect October 21st, in the latest move by the federal Liberals to restrict gun ownership in the country. The freeze is part of a swath of new measures announced by the government earlier this year, including a proposed new law to make it harder for certain people to own any firearms at all. Saskatchewan CFO Robert Freberg, who works closely with Alberta CFO Dr. Teri Bryant, spoke to John Gormley on CJME 980 talk radio to confirm that Saskatchewan will indeed join with Alberta and vehemently oppose any actions taken by the Trudeau government to enforce the confiscation of personal, private property of Canadians, including firearms.
