Alberta Premier Danielle Smith spoke with reporters at the legislative building in Edmonton after her first cabinet meeting. She was sworn in as the province's 19th premier at a ceremony held earlier in the day. Smith defeated six other candidates in the United Conservative Party leadership race on October 6 to succeed Jason Kenney. She is expected to announce her new cabinet on October 21.

The premier faced questions from reporters about her legislative priorities including her proposed Alberta Sovereignty Act. Smith echoed Justice Minister Tyler Shandro's position on the Trudeau governments federal buyback plan that would see the national RCMP enforce the confiscation of Albertans legally owned property.
