Lyrics:
I spend the night in a chair thinking she'll be there
But she never comes
And then I wake up and wipe the sleep from my eyes
And I rise to face another day
Without her
Doo doo, doo doo doo, doo doo doo
It's just no good anymore when you walk through the door
Of an empty room
And you go inside and set a table for one, it's no fun
When you spend a day
Without her
Doo doo, doo doo doo, doo doo doo
We burst the pretty balloon, took us to the moon
It's such a beautiful thing
But it's ended now
And it sounds like a lie
If I said I'd rather die, than live without her
Doo doo, doo doo doo, doo doo doo
Love is a beautiful thing when it knows how to swing
And it grooves like a clock
But the hands on the clock tell the lovers to part
And it's breaking my heart
To have to spend another day without her
Doo doo, doo doo doo, doo doo doo
I spend the night in a chair thinking she'll be there
But she never comes
And then I wake up and wipe the sleep from my eyes
And I rise to face another day
Without her
Doo doo, doo doo doo
Can't go on without her
Doo doo, doo doo doo
There's no song without her
It's all wrong without her
Can't go on without her

Indiana Wants Me - R. Dean Taylor (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Indiana Wants Me (R. Dean Taylor, 1970). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-07-31. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Indiana Wants Me," written by Richard Dean Taylor, was Taylor's only top 40 hit rising to the no. 5 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1970 (Whitburn, 2013). Taylor explained how he came to write the song. "I was living in a fleabag hotel and one night I heard these sirens and somebody was breaking in a store below . . . I looked out and police had surrounded this store and I turned my tape-recorder on. I saw Bonnie and Clyde a couple of times and with those two things that's how I came to write 'Indiana" (Melody Maker, Jul. 6, 1974). The original release of "Indiana Wants Me" had a police siren during the intro of the song, which at the time sounded extremely realistic. It was reported that when the song would come on driver's car radios, many would pull over to the side of the road thinking the police were behind them. Because of this, a number of radio stations would not play the song. So, Rare Earth records, the label that distributed the song, released a second version without the siren in the intro (songfacts, 2023).

Lyrics:
Indiana wants me
But, I can't go back there
Indiana wants me
But, I can't go back there
I wish I had you
To talk to
If a man ever needed dyin', he did
No one had the right to say what he said
About you
And it's so cold and lonely here without you
Out there the law's a-comin'
I'm scared and so tired of runnin'
Indiana wants me
But, I can't go back there
Indiana wants me
But, I can't go back there
I wish I had you to talk to
It hurts to see the man that I've become
And to know I'll never see the morning sun shine on the land
I'll never see your smilin' face or touch your hand
If just once more I could see
You, our home, and our little baby
Indiana wants me
But, I can't go back there
Indiana wants me
But, I can't go back there
I wish I had you to talk to
I hope this letter finds its way to you
Forgive me, love, for the shame I put you through
And all the tears
Hang on, love, to the memories of those happy years
Red lights are flashin' around me
Yeah, love, it looks like they found me
Indiana wants me
But, I can't go back there
Indiana wants me
But, I can't go back there
I wish I had you to talk to
But, I can't go back there

Lyrics:
I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song
I’m twenty-two now, but I won’t be for long
Time hurries on
And the leaves that are green turn to brown
And they whither with the wind
And they crumble in your hand
Once my heart was filled with love of a girl
I held her close, but she faded in the night
Like a poem I meant to write
And the leaves that are green turn to brown
And they wither with the wind
And they crumble in your hand
I threw a pebble in a brook
And watched the ripples run away
And they never made a sound
And the leaves that are green turn to brown
And they wither with the wind
And they crumble in your hand
Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello
Good-bye, Good-bye
Good-bye, Good-bye
That’s all there is
And the leaves that are green turn to brown

19th Nervous Breakdown (Rolling Stones, The, 1966). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-07-22. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"19th Nervous Breakdown," written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, was the band's 6th top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart rising to the no. 2 position in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013) and no. 2 in the UK as well (officialcharts, 2023). In a 1965 interview with Rolling Stone Monthly, Mick Jagger explained how the song came about. "We had just done five weeks hectic work in the States and I said, 'Dunno about you blokes, but I feel about ready for my nineteenth nervous breakdown.' We seized on it at once as a likely song title. Then Keith [Richards] and I worked on the number at intervals during the rest of the tour." December 5th, 1965, the band ended their US tour in Los Angeles. They entered the RCA studios in LA to record their next album "Aftermath." It was during the three day session that "19th Nervous Breakdown" and ten other songs were recored (S. Harper, udiscovermusic, Feb. 4, 2023).

Lyrics:
You're the kind of person you meet at certain dismal dull affairs.
Center of a crowd, talking much too loud running up and down the stairs.
Well, it seems to me that you have seen too much in too few years.
And though you've tried you just can't hide your eyes are edged with tears.
You better stop, look around,
Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes.
Here comes your nineteenth nervous breakdown.
When you were a child you were treated kind
But you were never brought up right.
You were always spoiled with a thousand toys but still you cried all night.
Your mother who neglected you owes a million dollars tax.
And your father's still perfecting ways of making sealing wax.
You better stop, look around,
Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes.
Here comes your nineteenth nervous breakdown.
Oh, who's to blame, that girl's just insane.
Well nothing I do don't seem to work,
It only seems to make matters worse. Oh please.
You were still in school when you had that fool who really messed your mind.
And after that you turned your back on treating people kind.
On our first trip I tried so hard to rearrange your mind.
But after a while I realized you were disarranging mine.
You better stop, look around,
Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes.
Here comes your nineteenth nervous breakdown.
Oh, who's to blame, that girl's just insane.
Well nothing I do don't seem to work,
It only seems to make matters worse. Oh please.
When you were a child you were treated kind
But you were never brought up right.
You were always spoiled with a thousand toys but still you cried all night.

And your father's still perfecting ways of making sealing wax.

"Shapes of Things," written by band members Jim McCarty, Keith Relf and Paul Smawell-Smith, was the Yardbirds' fourth release in the USA and their fourth top 20 hit landing at the no. 11 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). Originally, I assumed that "Shapes of Things" was an environmental song; however, according to Yardbirds' drummer Jim McCarty, the song "was very much about the state of the situation in the country with the Vietnam War, so it was sort of an anti-war song" (songfacts, 2023). Jeff Beck provided the guitar licks during the song, and because of his contribution, bassist Paul Samwell-Smith believed that Beck should have received co-credit for writing the song, which he did not receive (Clayson, 2002).

Lyrics:
Shapes of things before my eyes,
Just teach me to despise.
Will time make men more wise?
Here within my lonely frame,
my eyes just heard my brain.
But will it seem the same?
(Come Tomorrow) Will I be older?
(Come Tomorrow) May be a soldier.
(Come Tomorrow) May I be bolder than today?
Now the trees are almost green.
But will they still be seen?
When time and tide have been.
Fall into your passing hands.
Please don't destroy these lands.
Don't make them desert sands.
(Come Tomorrow) Will I be older?
(Come Tomorrow) May be a soldier.
(Come Tomorrow) May I be bolder than today?
Soon I hope that I will find,
Thoughts deep within my mind.
That won't displace my kind.

Lyrics:
I took my troubles down to Madame Rue
You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth
She's got a pad down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
Sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine
I told her that I was a flop with chicks
I've been this way since 1956
She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign
She said "What you need is Love Potion Number Nine"
She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink
She said "I'm gonna make it up right here in the sink"
It smelled like turpentine, it looked like India ink
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink
I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink
I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine
Love Potion Number Nine
Love Potion Number Nine

Good morning, mister sunshine
You brighten up my day
Come sit beside me
In your way
I see you every morning
Outside the restaurants
The music plays so nonchalant
Lonely days, lonely nights
Where would I be without my woman
Lonely days, lonely nights
Where would I be without my woman
Lonely days, lonely nights
Where would I be without my woman

Since I Fell For You - Lenny Welsh (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Since I Fell For You (Lenny Welsh, 1963). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-07-08. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Since I Fell For You," written by Buddy Johnson, was Lenny Welsh's only top 10 hit rising to the no. 4 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1963 (Whitburn, 2013). Although Johnson's song has been recorded my many artists, Welsh's version is the highest charting version and is considered a classic. The first recording of the song was by Buddy Johnson & His Orchestra back in 1945 with his sister Ella Johnson singing the lead (secondhandsongs, 2023). In 1947, Annie Laurie with Paul Gayten and His Trio had a no. 20 hit with the song on the Billboard chart (Whitburn, 1986).

Lyrics:
When you just give love, and never get love
you'd better let love depart
I know it's so, and yet I know
I can't get you out of my heart
You made me leave my happy home
You took my love, and now you've gone
since I fell for you
Love brings such misery and pain
I guess I'll never be the same
since I fell for you
Well it's too bad, and it's too sad
but I'm in love with you
You love me, then you snub me
But what can I do, I'm still in love with you
Well, I guess I'll never see the light
I get the blues most every night
since I fell for you
Since I fell for you

New York State of Mind - Billy Joel (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
New York State of Mind (Billy Joel, 1976). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey,
"New York State of Mind," written by Billy Joel, was never released as a single; it is found on his 3rd solo album "Turnstiles," which was released in 1976; the song is considered a classic (Whitburn, 2006). However, Joel did release the song on a single as a duet with Tony Bennett in 2001 (discdogs, 2023). In 2002, this recording was nominated for a Grammy in the "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals" category (Sony, 2002). During an interview with Howard Stern in 2010, Joel explained how he came to write the song. "He said that he wrote the song on the day he moved back from California to New York. He really was taking a Greyhound on the Hudson River line - he was on his way home to Highland Falls, New York when he started writing the song in a notebook. As soon as he got home, he went to the piano and finished the words and lyrics in about an hour" (songfacts, 2023)..

Lyrics:
Some folks like to get away
Take a holiday from the neighborhood
Hop a flight to Miami Beach
Or to Hollywood
But I'm taking a Greyhound
On the Hudson River Line
I'm in a New York state of mind
I've seen all the movie stars
In their fancy cars and their limousines
Been high in the Rockies under the evergreens
But I know what I'm needing
And I don't want to waste more time
I'm in a New York state of mind
It was so easy living day by day
Out of touch with the rhythm and blues
But now I need a little give and take
The New York Times, The Daily News
It comes down to reality
And it's fine with me 'cause I've let it slide
Don't care if it's Chinatown or on Riverside
I don't have any reasons
I've left them all behind
I'm in a New York state of mind
It was so easy living day by day
Out of touch with the rhythm and blues
But now I need a little give and take
The New York Times, The Daily News
It comes down to reality
And it's fine with me 'cause I've let it slide
Don't care if it's Chinatown or on Riverside
I don't have any reasons
I've left them all behind
I'm in a New York state of mind
I'm just taking a Greyhound on the Hudson River Line
'Cause I'm in a New York state of mind

Everything I Own - Bread (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Everything I Own (Bread, 1972). ive cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-06-22. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Everything I Own," written by David Gates, was Bread's 7th consecutive top 40 hit rising to the no. 5 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1972 (Whitburn, 2013). But in Britain, two cover versions of Gates' song rose to the no. 1 position: Ken Boothe (1974, no. 1) and Boy George (1987, no. 1) (Kutner & Leigh, 2005). The inspiration for the song came from an unusual place -- David Gates' father's funeral. "A friend took David aside and said, 'Your dad was so proud of what you were doing.' David agreed by replying, 'My success would have been so special to him as he was my greatest influence. So I decided to write and record Everything I Own about him. If you listen to the words, 'You sheltered me from harm, kept me warm, gave my life to me, set me free,' it says it all'" (Kutner & Leigh, 2005, p. 204)

Lyrics:
You sheltered me from harm
Kept me warm, kept me warm
You gave my life to me
Set me free, set me free
The finest years I ever knew,
Were all the years I had with you
And I would give anything I own
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own,
Just to have you back again
You taught me how to love
What it's of, what it's of
You never said too much,
But still you showed the way
And I knew from watching you
Nobody else could ever know,
The part of me that can't let go
And I would give anything I own,
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own,
Just to have you back again
Is there someone you know,
Your loving them so,
But taking them all for granted?
You may lose them one day
Someone takes them away,
And they don't hear the words you long to say
I would give anything I own,
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own,
Just to have you back again
Just to touch you once again

This song is found on Petty's first solo album "Full Moon Fever." Although members of his band the Heartbreakers did contribute to the album and this song, they were not credited as the album's artist (songfacts, 2023). The song was written in response to an arsonist who burnt down Petty's home; "'I Won't Back Down' was his way of reclaiming his life and getting past the torment" (songfacts, 2023).

Lyrics:
Well, I won't back down
No I won't back down
You could stand me up at the gates of Hell
But I won't back down
No I'll stand my ground
Won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
Gonna stand my ground
And I won't back down
(I won't back down) Hey baby
There ain't no easy way out (I won't back down)
Hey I will stand my ground
And I won't back down
Well, I know what's right
I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin' me around
But I'll stand my ground
And I won't back down
(I won't back down) Hey baby
There ain't no easy way out (I won't back down)
Hey I will stand my ground (I won't back down)
And I won't back down
(I won't back down) Hey baby
There ain't no easy way out (I won't back down)
Hey I won't back down
(I won't back down) Hey baby
There ain't no easy way out (I won't back down)
Hey I will stand my ground (I won't back down)
And I won't back down (I won't back down)
No I won't back down

Lyrics:
Make the world go away
And get it off my shoulders
Say the things you used to say
And make the world go away
Do you remember when you loved me
Before the world took me astray
If you do, then forgive me
And make the world go away
Make the world go away
And get it off my shoulders
Say the things you used to say
And make the world go away
I'm sorry if I hurt you
I'll make it up day by day
Just say you love me like you used to
And make the world go away
Make the world go away
And get it off my shoulders
Say the things you used to say
And make the world go away
Say the things you used to say
And make the world go away
"I Can See For Miles," written by Pete Townshend, was The Who's only top 10 hit in the US landing at the no. 9 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967 (Whitburn, 2013). In his book "Who Am I," (2012) Townshend wrote "On one of The Who's many trips away I began imagining that my fabulous new girlfriend Karen was deceiving me. . . It was this kind of paranoid, unhinged thinking that spurred me to write "I Can See for Miles" (p. 93). In one of the band's first performance of the song, they were booked on to "The Smothers Brothers' Comedy Hour." Their drummer, Keith Moon, decided to plant an "oversized theatrical charge of gun power, blowing up the entire band. . . My hair caught fire and my hearing was never the same. Keith was such a twat sometimes" (Townshend, 2012, p. 129).

Lyrics:
I know you've deceived me, now here's a surprise
I know that you have 'cause there's magic in my eyes
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Oh yeah
If you think that I don't know about the little tricks you've played
And never see you when deliberately you put things in my way
Well, here's a poke at you
You're gonna choke on it too
You're gonna lose that smile
Because all the while
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Oh yeah
You took advantage of my trust in you when I was so far away
I saw you holding lots of other guys and now you've got the nerve to say
That you still want me
Well that's as may be
But you gotta stand trial
Because all the while
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Oh yeah
I know you've deceived me, now here's a surprise
I know that you have 'cause there's magic in my eyes
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Oh yeah
The Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal are mine to see on clear days
You thought that I would need a crystal ball to see right through the haze
Well here's a poke at you
You're gonna choke on it too
You're gonna lose that smile

Lady Jane - Rolling Stones, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Lady Jane (Rolling Stones, The, 1966). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-06-08. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Lady Jane," written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, was the Rolling Stone's 12th top 40 hit rising to the no 24 position in 1966, while being the "B" side to "Mother's Little Helper" (Whitburn, 2013). According to Jagger "'Lady Jane' is a complete sort of very weird song. I don't really know what that's all about myself. All the names are historical but it was really unconscious that they should fit together from the same period" (songfacts, 2023). According to Philippe Margotin and Jean-Michel Guesdon in their book "The Rolling Stones - All the Songs: The Story Behind Every Track" (2016), "The identity of the heroine of “Lady Jane” has given rise to much speculation. For some, she is Jane Seymour, the third wife of King Henry VIII of England, who died twelve days after giving birth to the future Edward VI. According to this version, the song was inspired by a letter addressed by Henry VIII to Jane in which he assures her of his love and reveals his decision not to delay in executing of his second wife, Anne Boleyn, by decapitation. For others, the song is about Jane Ormsby-Gore, the daughter of David Ormsby-Gore (the fifth Baron Harlech) and, most importantly, the emblematic designer of Swinging London, with whom the Stones’ singer had an affair. Or again, perhaps the name of the heroine should be seen as another example of the licentious double entendre of which the singer of the Rolling Stones was so fond."

Lyrics:
My sweet lady Jane
When I see you again
Your servant am I
And will humbly remain
Just heed this plea, my love
On bended knees my love
I pledge myself to lady Jane
My dear lady Anne
I've done what I can
I must take my leave
For promised I am
This play is run, my love
Your time has come, my love
I pledge my troth to lady Jane
Oh, my sweet Marie
I wait at your ease
The sands have run out
For your lady and me
Wedlock is nigh my love
Her station's right my love
Life is secure with Lady Jane

Cotton Fields - Creedence Clearwater Revival (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Cotton Fields (Creedence Clearwater Revival, 1969). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-06-08. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Cotton Fields," written by Huddie Ledbetter (aka Lead Belly), was originally released by Lead Belly in 1940. Since then many artists have recorded the song. Although their version did not reach the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Creedence Clearwater Revival's (CCR) version, which was released in 1969 on their Willie and the Poorboys LP, did rise to the no. 1 position on the Billboard's Hits of the World chart in Mexico in 1970 (Bukkbiardm 2022; Whitburn, 2006). CCR's version removed a second verse from the song ("It may sound a little funny, but you didn't make very much money. In them old cotton fields at home") and simply repeated the first verse three times. The Highwaymen's version in 1961 rose to the no. 13 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (Whitburn, 2013). And although the Beach Boys' 1969 version did not chart in the USA, "It was number 1 in Australia, South Africa, Sweden and Norway, number 2 in Denmark, number 3 in Ireland, similarly top 5 in the United Kingdom, Japan, Spain and Rhodesia; number 12 in the Netherlands, number 13 in New Zealand and number 29 in Germany" (the-paulmccartney-project., 2016). Interesting that Ledbetter's lyric “It was down in Louisiana, just a mile from Texarkana” and other artists' lyric “just ABOUT a mile from Texarkana” is geographically incorrect. Texarkana is about 30 miles north of Louisiana in Arkansas (googlemaps, 2023; howderfamily, 2011).

"Fearless," written by Roger Waters and David Gilmour, was released on their 1971 album "Meddle" and the "B" side of their UK single "One of These Days" (genius, 2023; Wikipedia, 2023). The title of the song "is derived from a football (soccer) slang term for "awesome", which became a cliché among [Pink Floyd's] touring party" (last, 2023)..

You say the hill's too steep to climb, climbing
You say you'd like to see me try, climbing
You pick the place and I'll choose the time
And I'll climb the hill in my own way
Just wait a while for the right day
And as I rise above the tree line and the clouds
I look down hearing the sound
of the things you've said today
Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd, smiling
Merciless the magistrate turns around, frowning
And who's the fool who wears the crown
No doubt in your own way
And every day is the right day
And as you rise above the fear lines in his brow
You look down hear the sound of the faces in the crowd

Hold on tight to your dream
Hold on tight to your dream
When you see your ship go sailing
When you feel your heart is breaking
Hold on tight to your dream
It's a long time to be gone
Time just rolls on and on
When you need a shoulder to cry on
When you get so sick of trying
Hold tight to your dream
When you get so down that you can't get up
And you want so much but you're all out of luck
When you're so downhearted and misunderstood
Just over and over and over you could
Accroches-toi a ton rêve
Accroches-toi a ton rêve
Quand tu vois ton bateau partir
Quand tu sens ton coeur se briser
Accroches-toi a ton rêve
When you get so down that you can't get up
And you want so much but you're all out of luck
When you're so downhearted and misunderstood
Just over and over and over you could
Hold on tight to your dream
Hold on tight to your dream
When you see the shadows falling
When you hear that cold wind calling
Hold on tight to your dream
Hold on tight to your dream
Hold on tight to your dream

You and Me (Alice Cooper, 1977). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-05-28. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"You and Me ," written by Alice Cooper and Dick Wagner, was Alice Cooper's second top 10 hit climbing to the no. 9 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1977(Whitburn, 2013). Cooper has been considered the Grandfather of Goth; however, this song, as well as "I Never Cry" and "Only Women Bleed," were a shift from Cooper's darker rocking songs. He has described this genre as "heavy metal housewife rock" (songfacts, 2023). Others would consider the song an easy listening ballad (alicecooper, 2023).

When I get home from work,
I want to wrap myself around you.
I want to take you and squeeze you
till the passion starts to rise.
I want to take you to heaven.
That would make my day complete.
But you and me ain't no movie stars.
What we are is what we are.
We share a bed,
some lovin',
and TV, yeah.
And that's enough for a workin' man.
What I am is what I am.
And I tell you, babe,
well that's enough for me.
Sometimes when you're asleep
and I'm just starin' at the ceiling,
I want to reach out and touch you,
but you just go on dreamin'.
If I could take you to heaven,
that would make my day complete.
But you and me ain't no movie stars.
What we are is what we are.
We share a bed,
some lovin',
and TV, yeah.
That's enough for a workin' man.
What I am is what I am.
And I tell you, sweetheart
that's just enough for me.
You and me ain't no super stars.
What we are is what we are.
We share a bed,
some popcorn,
and TV, yeah.
And that's enough for a workin' man.
What I am is what I am.
And I tell you, babe,
you're just enough for me.
When I get home from work,

Mellow Yellow - Donovan (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Mellow Yellow (Donovan, 1966). Live performance by Bill Sharkey, Puka's, Kahala, HI. 2023-05-24. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Mellow Yellow," written by Donovan Leitch, was Donovan's second release to hit the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart rising to the no. 2 position in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). A rumor at the time was that the song was about getting high on banana skins by cooking them and inhaling the fumes, which wasn't the case; actually, Donovan stated that generally the song was about being laid back and cool. He also said that he and John Lennon "used to look in the back of newspapers and pull out funny things and they'd end up in songs. So it's [also] about . . . the electrical bananas that were appearing on the scene - which were ladies vibrators" (songfacts, 2023).

Keeping my eyes on the road I see you,
Keeping my hands on the wheel I hold you,
Ninety-nine miles from L.A.
I kiss you, I miss you,
Please be there.
Passing a white sandy beach we're sailing,
Turning the radio on we're dancing,
Ninety-nine miles from L.A.
I want you, I need you,
Please be there.
The windshield is covered with rain, I'm crying,
Pressing my foot on the gas, I'm flying.
Counting the telephone poles, I phone you,
Reading the signs on the road, I write you,
Ninety-nine miles from L.A. we're laughing, we're loving,
Please be there.
We're laughing, we're loving,
Please be there.

Earth Angel - Penguins, The / Crew Cuts, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Earth Angel (Penguins, The, 1954; Crew Cuts, The, 1955). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-05-16. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)," written by Jesse Belvin & Curtis Williams, was the Penguins' first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1954 rising to the no. 8 position; while the Crew Cuts' version followed hitting the no. 3 position the following year (Whitburn, 2013). Other artists also hit the Billboard chart with the song: Gloria Mann (1955 no. 18), Johnny Tillotson (1960 no. 57), the Vogues (1969 no. 42) and New Edition (1986 no 21) (Whitburn, 2013). "Counting up every version of this song, you arrive at over 30 million copies sold, making it the top R&B record of all time in terms of continuous popularity" (songfacts, 2023). It was the second doo-wop song to hit the Billboard top 10, the first being the Chords' "Sh-Boom" in 1954 (songfacts, 2023). It is interesting to note that "Earth Angel" was not the "A" side but the "B" side of the record; “Hey Senorita” was the "A" side of the Penguins' DooTone records' release, but the DJs like "Earth Angel" more and started to put it in rotation making it a huge hit (C. O’Dell, loc, 2023). The song was added to the National Registry in 2004 in the R&B genre (Library of Congress, 2023). Finally, the song had a bit of a resurgence in 1985 when Marty Fly and Marvin Berry and the Starlighters performed the song at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance in the film "Back To the Future." It was during this performance that Marty's future parents first kissed, which eventually secured the birth of Marty, his sister and his brother (backtothefuturefandom, 2023).

Lyrics:
Ohhhh . . .
Earth angel, earth angel,
Will you be mine?
My darling dear, love you all the time.
I'm just a fool, a fool in love with you.
Earth angel, earth angel,
The one I adore.
Love you forever, and evermore.
I'm just a fool, a fool in love with you.
I fell for you, and I knew the vision of your love's loveliness.
I hope and I pray that someday, I'll be the vision of your happiness.
Earth angel, earth angel,
Please be mine.
My darling dear, love you all the time.
I'm just a fool, a fool in love with you.
I fell for you, and I knew the vision of your love's loveliness.
I hope and I pray that someday, I'll be the vision of your happiness.
Earth angel, earth angel,
Please be mine.
My darling dear, love you all the time.
I'm just a fool, a fool in love with you

Hello Goodbye - Beatles, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Hello Goodbye -(Beatles, The, 1967). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Puka's Bar & Grill, Kahala, HI. 2023-04-21. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Hello Goodbye," written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, was the Beatles' 15th no. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967 (Whitburn, 2013) and hitting the no. 1 position in multiple countries (Wikipedia, 2023). Actually written by Paul McCartney, John Lennon has been quoted as saying that it is "three minutes of contradictions and meaningless juxtapositions;” he hated the song (T. Breihan, stereogum, 25 Oct 2018). According to McCartney "His friend Alistair Taylor, who was visiting McCartney, asked Paul one day how he wrote his many songs, and how he came up with his ideas. Paul took him into his dining room. . . As an experiment, Paul asked Taylor to shout out the opposite of whatever he sang, such as black and white, yes and no, hello and goodbye, etc. From this, the song was born" (songfacts, 2023).

Lyrics:
Heading for the station with a pack on my back
I'm tired of transportation in the back of a hack
I love to hear the rhythm of the clickity-clack
And hear the lonesome whistle, see the smoke from the stack
And pal around with democratic fellows named Mac
So, take me right back to the track, Jack!
Choo choo, choo choo, ch'boogie!
Woo woo, ooh ooh, ch'boogie!
Choo choo, choo choo, ch'boogie!
Take me right back to the track, Jack!
You reach your destination, but alas and alack!
You need some compensation to get back in the black
You take your morning paper from the top of the stack
And read the situation from the front to the back
The only job that's open needs a man with a knack
So put it right back in the rack, Jack!
Choo choo, choo choo, ch'boogie!
Woo woo, ooh ooh, ch'boogie!
Choo choo, choo choo, ch'boogie!
Take me right back to the track, Jack!
Gonna settle down by the railroad track
Live the life of Riley in the beaten-down shack
So when I hear a whistle I can peek through the crack
And watch the train a-rolling when it's balling the jack
I just love the rhythm of the clickity clack
So, take me right back to the track, Jack!
Choo choo, choo choo, ch'boogie!
Woo woo, ooh ooh, ch'boogie!
Choo choo, choo choo, ch'boogie!
Take me right back to the track, Jack!
Take me right back to the track

"Helpless," written by Neil Young, is found on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's 1970 album "Déjà Vu" (Whitburn, 2006). "This song is about the town of Omemee in Ontario. In 1949, Neil's parents moved there with him when he was just four years old. Young describes it as "a nice little town. Sleepy little place... Life was real basic and simple in that town. Walk to school, walk back. Everybody knew who you were. Everybody knew everybody" (songfacts, 2023).

Lyrics:
There is a town in North Ontario
Dream comfort memory to spare
And in my mind I still need a place to go
All my changes were there
Blue, blue windows behind the stars
Yellow moon on the rise
Big birds flying across the sky
Throwing shadows on our eyes
Leave us
Helpless, helpless, helpless, helpless
Babe, can you hear me now?
The chains are locked and tied across the door
Baby, sing with me somehow
Blue, blue windows behind the stars
Yellow moon on the rise
Big birds flying across the sky
Throwing shadows on our eyes
Leave us
Helpless, helpless, helpless, helpless
