Fire - Bruce Springsteen / Pointer Sisters (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Fire (Bruce Springsteen, 1987; Pointer Sisters, 1978) Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-11-02. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Fire," written by Bruce Springsteen, was a major hit for the Pointer Sisters in 1978 when their version rose to the no. 2 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; Springsteen himself released a version of the song that stalled at the no. 48 on the chart in 1987 (Whitburn, 2013). Initially, he was not able to release the song himself due to legal issues with his manager, which restricted his ability to record his own works (songfacts, 2023).

Lyrics:
I'm driving in my car
I turn on the radio
I'm pulling you close
You just say no
You say you don't like it
But girl I know you're a liar
'Cause when we kiss
Ooh, fire
But late at night
I'm takin' you home
I say I wanna stay
You say you wanna be alone
You say you don't love me
But you can't hide your desire
When we kiss
Ooh, fire
You had a hold on me
Right from the start
A grip so tight
I couldn't tear it apart
My nerves all jumpin'
Actin' like a fool
Well your kisses they burn
But your heart stays cool
Romeo and Juliet
Samson and Delilah
You can bet
Their love they didn't deny
Your words say split
But your words they lie
When we kiss
Mmh, fire
Fire
You had a hold on me
Right from the start
A grip so tight
I couldn't tear it apart
My nerves all jumpin'
Actin' like a fool
Well your kisses they burn
But your heart stays cool
Romeo and Juliet
Samson and Delilah
You can bet
Their love they didn't deny
Your words say split
But your words they lie
When we kiss
Mmh, fire

Lights - Journey (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Lights (Journey, 1978). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-11-02. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Lights," written by Steve Perry and Neal Schon, was Journey's third release and only made it to the no. 68 position in 1978 on the Billboard Hot 100 but remained on the chart for 10 weeks (Whitburn, 2013). The song was initially written about Los Angeles lights; however, Perry explained: "I had the song written in Los Angeles almost completely except for the bridge and it was written about Los Angeles. It was 'when the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on LA.' I didn't like the way it sounded at the time. And so I just had it sitting back in the corner. Then life changed my plans once again, and I was now facing joining Journey. I love San Francisco, the bay and the whole thing. 'The bay' fit so nice, 'When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on the bay.'' It was one of those early morning going across the bridge things when the sun was coming up and the lights were going down. It was perfect" (songfacts, 2023).

Lyrics:
When the lights go down in the city
And the sun shines on the bay
I want to be there in my city
Ooh, ooh
So you think you're lonely
Well my friend I'm lonely too
I want to get back to my city by the bay
Ooh, ooh
It's sad, oh there's been mornings
Out on the road without you
Without your charms
Ooh, my, my, my, my, my, my
Ooh
When the lights go down in the city
And the sun shines on the bay
Ooh, I want to be there in my city
Ooh, ooh
When the lights go down in the city
And the sun shines on the bay
Oh, I want to be there in my city

Glory Days - Bruce Springsteen (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Glory Days (Bruce Springsteen, 1985). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-10-29. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Glory Days," written by Bruce Springsteen, was Springsteen's 67th top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 rising to no. 5 in 1985 (Whitburn, 2013). According to Springsteen, "The first verse actually happened, the second verse mostly happened, the third verse, of course, is happening now" (songfacts, 2023). The song was about a chance encounter Springsteen had with an ex-high school classmate, Joe DePugh. "They played baseball together in the Babe Ruth League (ages 13-15). They were good friends, but drifted apart as Springsteen pursued music while DePugh took a shot at sports (he tried out for the Los Angeles Dodgers). In the summer of 1973, DePugh was walking in to a bar called the Headliner in Neptune, New Jersey while Springsteen was walking out. Bruce went back in, where he and his old friend talked about the good old days until the bar closed (K. Coyne, songfacts, 2023).

Lyrics:
I had a friend was a big baseball player
Back in high school
He could throw that speed ball by you
Make you look like a fool boy
Saw him the other night at this roadside bar
I was walking in, he was walking out
We went back inside sat down had a few drinks
But all he kept talking about was
Glory days, well they'll pass you by
Glory days, in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days
Well there's a girl that lives up the block
Back in school she could turn all the boy's heads
Sometimes on a Friday I'll stop by
And have a few drinks after she put her kids to bed
Her and her husband Bobby, well they split up
I guess it's two years gone by now
We just sit around talking about the old times,
She says when she feels like crying
She starts laughing thinking about
Glory days well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days
I think I'm going down to the well tonight
And I'm going to drink till I get my fill
And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it
But I probably will
Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture
A little of the glory of, well time slips away
And leaves you with nothing mister but
Boring stories of glory days
Glory days well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days
Well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days
Well alright oo yeah
Well alright come on now

Lyrics:
Green grass 'round my window
Young leaves that the wind blows
Yes, it's springtime, golden sunshine
And we're glad, my little love and I
Now that summertime is nigh
Carefree kissin' couples
Dream away all their troubles
'cause it's springtime, golden sunshine
While the bluebirds sing their magic song
We will love the summer long
All the winter we've been waitin'
Girl and I anticipatin'
What we're gonna do with summer overdue
Now it's here, we're out together
So the weatherman had better
Do his best to make a show
And bring the sunshine out to grow the
Green grass 'round my window
Young leaves that the wind blows
Yes, it's springtime, golden sunshine
While the bluebirds sing their magic song
We will love the summer long
We will love the summer long
We will love the summer long
We will love the summer long

Lyrics:
Every time I see your face
It reminds me of the places we used to go
But all I've got is a photograph
And I realize you're not coming back anymore
I thought I'd make it
The day you went away
But I can't make it
Till you come home again to stay
I can't get used to living here
While my heart is broke, my tears I cry for you
I want you here to have and hold
As the years go by, and we grow old and gray
Now you're expecting me to live without you
But that's not something that I'm looking forward to
I can't get used to living here
While my heart is broke, my tears I cry for you
I want you here to have and hold
As the years go by, and we grow old and gray
Every time I see your face
It reminds me of the places we used to go
But all I've got is a photograph

(Just Like) Starting Over - John Lennon (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
(Just Like) Starting Over (John Lennon, 1980). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-10-15. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"(Just Like) Starting Over," written by John Lennon, was Lennon's second and last no. 1 hit o the Billboard Hot 100 chart rising to the top position in 1980 (Whitburn, 2013). Lennon had recorded this song just before his death, which occurred on Dec 8, 1980. After he was killed by Mark David Chapman, the song rose to the #1 position and remained there for 5 weeks (Whitburn, 2013). This was one of the last songs Lennon recorded for his Lennon/Ono "Double Fantasy" LP (songfacts, 2013). "The copy of Double Fantasy that Mark Chapman asked Lennon to autograph might be the most valuable record in the world. The record, which figured in the court case, not only has Lennon's autograph but also boasts Chapman's fingerprints on the cover. In 2003, the record was sold for £525,000 [$641,150.62 in today's exchange rate] but its value has since rocketed" (songfacts, 2023); in fact, the album was placed in auction in 2020 and sold for $900,000 (goldinauctions, 2023).

Lyrics:
Our life together
Is so precious together
We have grown, we have grown
Although our love is still special
Let's take a chance and fly away
Somewhere alone
It's been too long since we took the time
No-one's to blame, I know time flies so quickly
But when I see you darling
It's like we both are falling in love again
It'll be just like starting over
Starting over
Everyday we used to make it love
Why can't we be making love nice and easy
It's time to spread our wings and fly
Don't let another day go by my love
It'll be just like starting over
Starting over
Why don't we take off alone
Take a trip somewhere far, far away
We'll be together all alone again
Like we used to in the early days
Well, well, well darling
It's been too long since we took the time
No-one's to blame, I know time flies so quickly
But when I see you darling
It's like we both are falling in love again
It'll be just like starting over
Starting over
Our life together
Is so precious together
We have grown, we have grown
Although our love still is special
Let's take a chance and fly away somewhere
(Over and over and over)
Starting over (over and over and over)
(And over and over and over)
(Over and over and over)
(And over and over and over)

Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye - Casinos, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye (Casinos, The, 1967). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-10-11. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye," written by John D. Loudermilk, was the Casinos' only top 40 hit rising to the no. 6 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967 (Whitburn, 2013). Other artists who charted with the song include Glen Campbell (no. 27, 1976 as a medley "Don't Pull Your Love/Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye, which also hit the no. 4 position on the Billboard Country Songs chart)," Toby Beau (no. 57, 1979) and Eddie Arnold (no. 84, 1968). Arnold's version, however, rose to the number one position on the Billboard Country chart and in 1996, Neal McCoy had a no. 4 hit on the Country chart (songfacts, 2023; Whitburn, 2013). Songfacts stated: "The odds of this becoming a pop hit in '67 weren't great. The Casinos' doo-wop stylings and clean-cut image were falling out of fashion by the mid-'60s as America was firmly in the grip of Beatlemania, and long-haired, blue-jeans-wearing youths were embracing the laid-back hippie aesthetic. . . Lyrics:
Kiss me each morning for a million years
Hold me each evening at your side
Tell me you'll love me for a million years
Then if it don't work out
Then if it don't work out
Then you can tell me goodbye
Sweeten my coffee with a morning kiss
Soften my dreams with your sighs
Tell me you'll love me for a million years
Then if it don't work out
Then if it don't work out
Then you can tell me goodbye
If you must go, oh no, I won't grieve
If you wait a lifetime before you leave
But if you must go
Mm, I won't tell you no
Just so that we can say we tried
Tell me you'll love me for a million years
Then if it don't work out
Then if it don't work out
Then you can tell me goodbye

I Love the Night Life - Alicia Bridges (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
I Love the Night Life (Alicia Bridges, 1978). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-10-06. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"I Love the Night Life," written by Alicia Bridges and Susan Hutcheson, was Bridges' only top forty hit, a one hit wonder, rising to the no. 5 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978 (Whitburn, 2013). It is interesting that the song was originally written with an R&B vibe, but because of the disco trend, her producer changed it to a disco number (aliciabridgesforacauseofwomen, 2023; songfacts, 2023). Contrary to the belief that Bridges was a disco performer, she "was primarily a singer of R&B, rock, blues and love songs" (aliciabridgesforacauseofwomen, 2023). In fact, she told Sounds Magazine, "I will never do a disco album. I'd prefer to do deodorant commercials. I didn't sing since I was ten years old so I could stand up like a moron and go 'Getfunkynow, getfunkynow, getboogie-woogie, getfunkynow'" (Sounds Magazine, 1979).

Lyrics:
Please don't talk about love tonight.
Please don't talk about sweet love.
Please don't talk about being true
And all the trouble we've been through.
Ah, please don't talk about all of the plans
We had for fixin' this broken romance.
I want to go where the people dance.
I want some action I want to live!
Action, I got so much to give.
I want to give it.
I want to get some too.
Oh, I
Oh, I
I love the nightlife
I got to boogie on the disco 'round, oh yea.
Oh, I love the night life
I got to boogie on the disco 'round, oh yea.
Please don't talk about love tonight.
Your sweet talking won't make it right.
Love and lies just bring me down
When you've got women all over town.
You can love them all and when you're through
Maybe that'll make, huh, a man out of you.
I got to go where the people dance.
I want some action I want to live!
Action, I got so much to give.
I want to give it, I want to get some too.
Oh, I
Oh, I
I love the nightlife
I got to boogie on the disco 'round, oh yea.
Oh, I love the night life

Long Dark Road - Hollies, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Long Dark Road (Hollies, The, 1972). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-10-01. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Long Dark Road," written by Tony Hicks and Kenny Lynch, was the Hollies' 10th top 40 hit rising to no. 26 in the winter of 1972 (Whitburn, 2013). Graham Nash had left the band in 1968 to help form Crosby , Stills & Nash, and Terry Sylvester replaced Nash on guitar and vocals (callmefred, 2023). Gary Brooker (of Procol Harum fame) played organ and piano for the recording of the song (wikipedia, 2023). The song can be found as the last track on the 1971 album Distant Light, which was the highest charting album for the Hollies; it rose to the no. 21 position on the Billboard 200 Albums chart in 1972 (Whitburn, 2006).

Lyrics:
It's over, well over
In my mind and in my heart
It's over, well over
But then again, it didn't have a good start
You'd tell me, try to sell me
It could have been all I asked
It's over, well over
It's there and flows away a distant past
Now it's a long, dark road
Yes, a long, dark road
And you know I loved you
Yes, you know I loved you
Now it's a long, dark road
Yes, a long, dark road
And you know I loved you
Yes, you know I loved you
It's over, well over
And we can't revive what's past
It's gone now, moved on now
But then again it didn't have a chance to last
No, no, no, a chance to last
Now it's a long, dark road (It's a long, very long, road)
Yes, a long, dark road (It's a long, very long, road)
And you know I loved you
Yes, you know I loved you
Now it's a long, dark road (It's a long, very long, road)
Yes, a long, dark road (It's a long, very long, road)
Now it's a long, dark road (It's a long, very long, road)
Yes, a long, dark road (It's a long, very long, road)
Now it's a long, dark road (It's a long, very long, road) (Baby, I need you, I need you)

Sweeter Than You - Ricky Nelson (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Sweeter Than You (Ricky Nelson, 1959). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-09-26. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Sweeter Than You," written by Baker Knight, was Ricky Nelson's 15th top 20 hit landing at the no. 9 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959 (Whitburn, 2013). "'Sweeter Than You' delves into the depths of love and admiration, expressing the speaker's deep emotional attachment and [his] desire to be entirely devoted to [his] loved one (songtel, 2013). Incredibly, Baker Knight wrote six of Nelson's top 40 hits during an eleven month span between 1958-1959: "Lonesome Town," I Got A Feeling," "Never Be Anyone Else But You," "Sweeter Than You," I Wanna Be Loved" and "Mighty Good" (Whitburn 2013)

I could never be loved by anyone sweeter than you
And I could never belong to anyone sweeter than you
With you to stand beside me I'll never be alone
And what more could I long for than to have you for my own
My only desire is loving you eternally
For no, no other love could ever mean so much to me
So if you say you love me forever I'll be true
And what more could I long for than to live my life (with you)
I could never be loved by anyone sweeter than you
And I could never belong to anyone (sweeter than you)

"Six O'Clock," written by John Sebastian, was the Lovin' Spoonful's last top 20 hit rising to no. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967 (Whitburn, 2013). It has been argued that "Six O'Clock" may have been the first pop song to use the clavinet (J. Kimsey, zeroto180, Mar. 2, 2016). Some thought that Sebastian was using an electric harpsichord, but according to Sebastian: “It was a Hohner Clavinet. My father [John B. Sebastian] was a concert chromatic harmonica player, so I was way inside when it came to Hohner (I played with Matt Hohner‘s kids). I may have had one of the first [clavinets], due also to the band’s success” (zeroto180, Jun. 29, 2016). However, a closer look may indicate that The Left Banke was the first group to use the clavinet on a pop song, "Let Go of You Girl," which was recorded sometime between December 1965 - January 1967 and was released on their debut album "Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina" in February of 1967 (rateyourmusic, 2023); although Wiikipedia suggest it was released in January of 1967. Regardless, The Lovin' Spoonful released "Six O'Clock" in April 1967 and is found on their album "Everything Playing," which was released in December of 1967 (genius, 2023); both were released after the release of "Let Go of You Girl." What could be argued is that "Six O'Clock" was the first pop release to use the clavinet that landed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
An interesting side note, "After the song was released [guitarist] Zal Yanovsky was busted for marijuana possession in San Francisco. As a Canadian citizen, concerned he would be barred from re-entering the United States, Yanovsky cooperated with police and named his drug supplier. The incident resulted in a boycott started by a Los Angeles Times columnist, 'urging people not to buy Spoonful records or attend their concerts.' Yanovsky subsequently left the band and was replaced by Jerry Yester" (R. McGinnis, vancouversignaturesounds, Apr. 29, 2020). Some have argued that this led to radio stations not placing the song in rotation.

Lyrics:
There's something special 'bout six o'clock
In the morning when it's still too early to knock
And the dusky light shines down on the block
And reflects up and down on the hands of the clock
Six o'clock, six o'clock
A few hours ago she was standing here
Just watching the stars in our eyes and the lights as the tights disappeared
And I could feel I could say what I want
That I could nudge her and call her my confidante
And now I'm back alone with just my shadow in front
At six o'clock, six o'clock
I went home and found that time to sleep was rare
Just watching my eyelids, knowing my brain bids the night not to care
I got up and got scufflin' around
But somehow it just wasn't the same happy town
And the bells didn't ring with the same happy sound
At six o'clock, six o'clock
If I go back where we parted
Could I ever feel like that again
Guess I'll just have to wait 'til tomorrow
But what can I do 'til then
Guess I'll go back home and just wait until dawn
Yes, I had to learn going back where we were wouldn't help at all
And I wish my head had been working right
We'd have gone for coffee and talked all night
And now I'm back alone, bein' twisted up tight
Six o'clock, six o'clock
Now I'm back alone
Yes, now I'm back alone
I'm back alone

Don't Rock the Jukebox - Alan Jackson (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Don't Rock the Jukebox (Alan Jackson 1991). Live performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-09-22. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Don't Rock the Jukebox," written by Alan Jackson, Roger Murrah and Keith Stegall, was Jackson's 5th consecutive top 10 hit on the Billboard Top country Singles chart rising to the top position in 1991; it was Jackson's second no. 1 hit (Whitburn, 1994). According to Jackson, my group the Strayhorns "were playing this little truck stop lounge up in Doswell, Virginia, a place called Geraldine's. We'd been there for four or five nights, you know, playing those dance sets. It'd been a long night, I took a break and walked over to the Jukebox. Roger, my bass player, was already over there reading the records, you know. I leaned up on the corner of it and one of the legs was broken off, jukebox kind of wobbling around, you know. And Roger looked up at me and said 'Don't rock the jukebox'" (A. Jackson, youtube video, Mar. 1991).

Lyrics:
Don't rock the jukebox
I wanna hear some Jones
Cause my heart ain't ready
For the Rolling Stones
I don't feel like rocking
Since my baby's gone
So don't rock the jukebox
Play me a country song
Before you drop that quarter
Keep one thing in mind
You got a heartbroke hillbilly
Standing here in line
I've been down and lonely
Ever since she left
Before you punch that number
Could I make one request
Don't rock the jukebox
I wanna hear some Jones
Cause my heart ain't ready
For the Rolling Stones
I don't feel like rocking
Since my baby's gone
So don't rock the jukebox
Play me a country song
I ain't got nothing
Against rock and roll
But when your heart's been broken
You need a song that's slow
There ain't nothing like a steel guitar
To drown a memory
Before you spend your money baby
Play a song for me
Don't rock the jukebox
I wanna hear George Jones
Cause my heart ain't ready
For the Rolling Stones
I don't feel like rocking
Since my baby's gone
So don't rock the jukebox
Play me a country song
Don't rock the jukebox
Play me a country song

Lyrics:
It's cold here in the city
It always seems that way
And I've been thinking about you almost everyday
Thinking about the good times
Thinking about the rain
Thinking about how bad it feels alone again
I'm sorry for the way things are in China
I'm sorry things ain't what they used to be
But more than anything else
I'm sorry for myself
'Cause you're not here with me
Our friends all ask about you
And I say you're doing fine
And I expect to hear from you almost anytime
But they all know I'm crying
And I can't sleep at night
They all know I'm dying down deep inside
I'm sorry for all the lies I told you
I'm sorry for the things I didn't say
But more than anything else
I'm sorry for myself
I can't believe you went away
I'm sorry if I took some things for granted
I'm sorry for the chains I put on you
But more than anything else
I'm sorry for myself
For living without you

No Particular Place To Go - Chuck Berry (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
No Particular Place To Go (Chuck Berry, 1964). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-09-16. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"No Particular Place To Go," written by Chuck Berry, was Berry's 6th top 10 hit rising to no. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1964 (Whitburn, 2013). "'No Particular Place To Go' was written right after Berry served 18 months in prison for violating the Mann Act (allmusic, 2023; G. Lipsitz, britannica, 2023). It is interesting that in the final two verses, Berry notes that he's "riding along in my calaboose" (i.e., jail cell).

Lyrics:
Riding along in my automobile
My baby beside me at the wheel
I stole a kiss at the turn of a mile
My curiosity runnin' wild
Crusin' and playin' the radio
With no particular place to go
Riding along in my automobile
I was anxious to tell her the way I feel
So I told her softly and sincere
And she leaned and whispered in my ear
Cuddlin' more and drivin' slow
With no particular place to go
No particular place to go
So we parked way out on the Kokomo
The night was young and the moon was gold
So we both decided to take a stroll
Can you image the way I felt
I couldn't unfasten her safety belt
Ridin' along in my calaboose
Still trying to get her belt a-loose
All the way home I held a grudge
For the safety belt that wouldn't budge
Crusin' and playin' the radio
With no particular place to go
Ridin' along in my calaboose
Still trying to get her belt a-loose
All the way home I held a grudge
For the safety belt that wouldn't budge
Crusin' and playin' the radio
With no particular place to go

Rich Girl - Hall & Oates (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Rich Girl (Hall & Oates, 1976). Live performance by Bill Sharkey, Puka's Bar & Grill, Kahala,, HI. 2023-08-30. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"
"Rich Girl" was Hall & Oates' fourth consecutive top 40 hit and their first #1 song, reaching the top position Spring of 1977 (Whitburn, 2013). When asked where the lyrics for the song came from, Daryl Hall stated that the song "was written about an old boyfriend of Sara’s . . . from college that she was still friends with at the time [Sara was Allen's ex-girlfriend and song writing collaborator] . . . . He came to our apartment, and he was acting sort of strange. His father was quite rich. I think he was involved with some kind of a fast-food chain. I said, 'This guy is out of his mind, but he doesn’t have to worry about it because his father’s gonna bail him out of any problems he gets in.' So I sat down and wrote that chorus. [Sings] 'He can rely on the old man’s money/he can rely on the old man’s money/he’s a rich guy.' I thought that didn’t sound right, so I changed it to 'Rich Girl' " (K. Sharp, americansongwriter.com, 2009).

Lyrics:
You're a Rich Girl, but you've gone too far
'Cause you know it doesn't matter anyway
You can rely on the old man's money
You can rely on the old man's money
It's a bitch, girl, but it's gone too far
'Cause you know it doesn't matter anyway
Say, money,
Money won't get you too far, get you too far
Don't you know,
Don't you know that it's wrong
To take what he's givin' you
So far gone, on your own
But you could get along
If you tried to be strong,
But you'll never be strong
You're a Rich Girl and you've gone too far
'Cause you know it doesn't matter anyway
You can rely on the old man's money
You can rely on the old man's money
It's a bitch, girl, but it's gone too far
'Cause you know it doesn't matter anyway
Say, money,
Money won't get you too far, get you too far
High and dry, out of the rain
It's so easy
To hurt others when you can't feel pain
Don't you know that a love can't grow
But it's too much to give
'Cause you'd rather live for the thrill of it all
Oh you're a Rich Girl and you've gone too far
'Cause you know it doesn't matter anyway
You can rely on the old man's money
You can rely on the old man's money
It's a bitch girl, but it's gone too far
'Cause you know it doesn't matter anyway
Say, money, money won't get you too far
Say, money, money won't get you too far
Say, money, money won't get you too far,
Get you too far
And you say you can rely on the old man's money
You can rely on the old man's money
You're a rich girl
Rich girl
Oh, you're a rich rich rich girl

Why am I losin' sleep over you?
Relivin' precious moments we knew?
So many days have gone by
Still I'm so lonely, and I
Guess there's just no getting over you
And there's nothin' I can do
But spend all of my time, out of my mind over you
Within the prison walls of my mind
There's still a part of you left behind
And tho' it hurts I'll get by
Without your lovin', yes, I
Guess there's just no getting over you
And there's nothin' I can do
But spend all of my time, out of my mind over you
And I guess there's just no getting over you
And there's nothin' I can do

I Am A Rock (Simon & Garfunkel, 1966). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Puka's Bar & Grill, Kahala, HI. 2023-0-26. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"I Am A Rock," written by Paul Simon, was the Simon & Garfunkel's third top 10 hit rising to no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). Simon had written the song a few years earlier and offered the song to Chad and Jeremy to record, but they turned it down (songfests, 2023). The original recording of the song was by Paul Simon himself and released as a single in the UK, but it did not fly. After the success of "The Sound of Silence," Simon & Garfunkel headed back into the studio with session musicians, which according to guitarist, included himself (12 string guitar), Al Kooper (organ) and Bobby Gregg (drums) (no mention of who played bass) (songfacts, 2023). However, James Bennighof, in his biography of Simon, claimed the session musicians were Hal Blaine (drums), Carol Kaye (bass guitar), Larry Knechtel (organ) and Joe South (guitar) (2007).

Lyrics:
A winter's day
In a deep and dark
December
I am alone
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow
I am a rock
I am an island
I've built walls
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate
I have no need of friendship, friendship causes pain
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain
I am a rock
I am an island
Don't talk of love
But I've heard the words before
It's sleeping in my memory
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died
If I never loved I never would have cried
I am a rock
I am an island
I have my books
And my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armor
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb
I touch no one and no one touches me
I am a rock
I am an island
And a rock feels no pain
And an island never cries

500 Miles - Peter, Paul & Mary (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
500 Miles (Peter, Paul & Mary, 1962). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-08-26. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"500 Miles," written by Hedwig Grace "Hedy" West, was released on Peter, Paul & Mary's eponymous-titled debut album in 1962 (Whitburn, 2006). The album spent seven weeks at the no. 1 position on the Billboard 200 chart and remained on the chart for 185 weeks! (Whitburn, 2006). Bobby Bare released a version of "500 Miles," but with alternate/additional lyrics, in 1963, which rose to the no. 10 position on the Billboard Hot 100 and no. 5 on the Billboard Country charts (Whitburn, 1986, 2013). Others who recorded the song and made the Billboard Hot 100 include Heaven Bound (1972, #79) and The Hooters (1989, no. 97) (Whitburn, 2013). It has been argued that the first recorded version of the song was by the Journeymen in 1961 (secondhandsongs, 2023; wikipedia, 2023). The song has also been titled "500 Miles Away from Home" and "Railroaders' Lament" (last, 2023).

"Baby I Need Your Loving," written by Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland, was the Four Tops' first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 landing at the no. 11 position in 1964 (Whitburn, 2013). Other artists who hit the Billboard chart with their version of the song include Johnny Rivers (no. 3, 1967), O. C. Smilth (no. 52, 1970) and Eric Carmen (no. 62, 1979). "The Four Tops were around for 11 years before they broke through with this song. It was their first single for Motown Records" (songfacts, 2023). Songfacts' writer, Carl Wiser, interviewed co-writer Lamont Dozier; he said that the songs they wrote started out as ballads to find an emotional feel with chords. "Then when we got in the studio, we would pick up the tempo. Because at the time, dance music was in with the kids, so we tried to make them commercial by picking up the speed. That's what made the songs commercial" (Jun. 18, 2023).

Lyrics:
Woo woo woo
Baby, I need your lovin'
Baby, I need your lovin'
Although you're never near
Your voice I often hear
Another day, 'nother night
I long to hold you tight
'Cause I'm so lonely
Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'
Baby I need your lovin'
Got to have all you lovin'
Some say it's a sign of weakness
For a man to beg
Then weak I'd rather be
If it means having you to keep
'Cause lately I've been losing sleep
Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'
Baby I need your lovin'
Got to have all you lovin'
Lonely nights echo your name
Oh, sometimes I wonder
Will I ever be the same?
Oh yeah! When you see me smiling
You know things have gotten worse
Any smile you might see has all been rehearsed
Darling, I can't go on without you
This emptiness won't let me live without you
This loneliness inside, darling
Makes me feel half alive
Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'
Baby I need your lovin'
Got to have all you lovin'
Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'
Baby I need your lovin'
Got to have all you lovin'
Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'
Baby I need your lovin'
Got to have all you lovin'

"The Sounds of Silence," written by Paul Simon, was Simon & Garfunkel's first release and it hit the no. 1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1965-1966 (Whitburn, 2013). The song was released in 1964 on the duo's debut album "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." with the title "The Sound of Silence;" the song was remixed and released as a single the following year and was printed as "The Sounds of Silence." The new remixed version was then added to their 2nd album titled "Sounds of Silence," which was released in 1966 (Whitburn, 2006). According to Simon, "It's a young lyric, but not bad for a 21-year-old. It's not a sophisticated thought, but a thought that I gathered from some college reading material or something. It wasn't something that I was experiencing at some deep, profound level - nobody's listening to me, nobody's listening to anyone - it was a post-adolescent angst, but it had some level of truth to it and it resonated with millions of people" (songfacts, 2023). "Despite its great popularity, Blender magazine voted [the song] the 42nd worst song ever, remarking sardonically that 'If Frasier Crane were a song, he would sound like this'"(songfacts, 2023).

Lyrics:
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sounds of silence

"Homburg," written by Gary Brooker and Keith Reid, was a minor hit for Procol Harum and was their second entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart landing at the no. 34 position in 1967 (Whitburn, 2013). Funny, for years I did not really listen to the lyrics and thought the song was about the town in Germany. I was quite surprised to learn it was referencing a type of hat, which is "traditionally crafted from stiff wool, fur or felt, featuring a grosgrain hatband and appropriate brim trim for just a dash of color" with a single dent running down the middle of the hat (fashionablehats, 2023). In terms of the lyrics, "in a radio interview with DJ Harry Harrison, [Gary] Brooker said the words came from [Keith] Reid's experiences and only he knows what they mean. However he didn't think they meant anything literally. Instead if you take each line the way the words are used, they create little feelings, little moods" (songfacts, 2023).

Lyrics:
Your multilingual business friend
Has packed her bags and fled
Leaving only ash-filled ashtrays
And the lipstick, unmade bed
The mirror, on reflection
Has climbed back up on the wall
For the floor she found descended
And the ceiling was too tall
Your trouser cuffs are dirty
And your shoes are laced up wrong
You'd better take off your Homburg
'Cause your overcoat is too long
The town clock in the market square
Stands waiting for the hour
When its hands they both turn backward
And on meeting will devour
Both themselves and also any fool
Who dares to tell the time
And the sun and moon will shadow
And the signpost cease to sign
Your trouser cuffs are dirty
And your shoes are laced up wrong
You'd better take off your Homburg
'Cause your overcoat is too long
Your trouser cuffs are dirty
And your shoes are laced up wrong
You'd better take off your Homburg
'Cause your overcoat is too long

Ticket To Ride - Beatles, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
Ticket To Ride (Beatles, The, 1965). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Puka's Bar & Grill Courtyard, Kahala, HI. 2023-06-28. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"Ticket To Ride," written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, was The Beatles' 8th no. 1 chart topping hit on the Billboard Hot 100 landing at the top position in 1965 (Whitburn, 2013). This was the first Beatles' release that was over 3:00 in length (3:10) (songfacts, 2023). Don Short, a person who traveled with The Beatles, stated that John Lennon told him that the song was about "the girls who worked the streets in Hamburg [who] had to have a clean bill of health and the authorities would give them a card saying they were clean. Don later said that although he specifically recalls John telling him that, John could have been joking" (songfacts, 2023). However, according McCartney, the title referred to a British railways ticket to the town of Ryde (beatlesebooks, 2023).

Lyrics:
I think I'm going to be sad
I think it's today, yeah
The girl that's driving me mad is going away
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
And she don't care
She said that living with me
Was bringing her down, yeah
For she would never be free
When I was around
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
And she don't care
I don't know why she's riding so high
She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me
Before she gets to saying goodbye
She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me
I think I'm gonna be sad
I think it's today, yeah
The girl that's drivin' me mad
Is goin' away, yeah
Ah, she's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
But she don't care
I don't know why she's ridin' so high
She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me
Before she gets to sayin' goodbye
She ought to think twice
She ought to do right by me
She said that livin' with me
Was bringin' her down
Yeah
She would never be free
When I was around
Ah, she's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
But she don't care
My baby don't care
My baby don't care
My baby don't care
My baby don't care

You Are the Woman - Firefall (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
You Are the Woman (Firefall, 1976). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-08-12 "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"You Are the Woman," written by guitarist Rick Roberts, was Firefall's best selling release rising to no. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the fall of 1976 (Whitburn, 2013). The band was a rock band and did not like the soft rock song, but their producer insisted that they needed a hit and this was it. In fact bassist Mark Andes said "We knew it was going to be hugely successful, but we resisted. I remember feeling like, "Oh God, really?" (songfacts podcast, 2021). Guitarist Jock Bartley did eventually come around; he said, "I've been playing 'You Are The Woman' for 40-plus years and we are so lucky to have a hit song that is that big. It isn't totally representative of what all the rest of our songs sounded like, but that song has kept me working for 40 years and has kept Firefall together, so I'm happy to play it" (songfest podcast, 2021). How the song came about is a bit interesting. According to bandmate Larry Burnett, "[Roberts] gets a big bag of cocaine and gets real high, and then he gets papers and pencil and starts writing down rhyming words on the right-hand side of the page . . . And then he tries to attach sentences to each rhyming word, and then pushes everything around and tries to have it make sense, because, as you might imagine, it's not going to make sense right away, considering his approach to songwriting" (songfacts, 2023). Roberts commented on who the song was written for: "As I understand it, there are about a half a dozen women around this country who have told people repeatedly that ['You Are the Woman'] was written about them, . . . In fact, [this] song was not written about anyone, because the woman I had always dreamed of, I was still dreaming of" (songfacts, 2013).

Lyrics:
You are the woman that I've always dreamed of
I knew it from the start
I saw your face and that's the last I've seen of my heart
It's not so much the things you say to me
It's not the things you do
It's how I feel each time you're close to me
That keeps me close to you
Whoa, oh
You are the woman that I've always dreamed of
I knew it from the start
I saw your face and that's the last I've seen of my heart
It's not so much your pretty face I see
It's not the clothes you wear
It's more that special way you look at me
That always keeps me there
Whoa, whoa
You are the woman that I've always dreamed of
I knew it from the start
I saw your face and that's the last I've seen of my heart
It's hard to tell you all the love I'm feeling
That's just not my style
You've got a way to send my senses reeling
Every time you smile
Whoa
You are the woman that I've always dreamed of
I knew it from the start
I saw your face and that's the last I've seen of my heart
Of my heart
Ooh, of my heart

The Weight - Band, The (cover-live by Bill Sharkey)
The Weight (Band, The, 1968). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2023-08-08. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"
"The Weight," written by Robbie Robertson, was The Band's first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968 stalling at no. 63 on the chart (Whitman, 2013). According to songfacts (2023), "Nazareth, where the story takes place, refers to the town in Pennsylvania about 70 miles north of Philadelphia. The rock group Nazareth got their name from this line ("Went down to Nazareth, I was feeling about half past dead..."). . . Robbie Robertson [said] . . . he chose that place because they make legendary Martin guitars there, so he was aware of the town and been there once or twice." Songfacts continued, "The characters in the song - Crazy Chester, Luke, Anna Lee, are based on friends of the band." A few other artists made it onto the Billboard chart with their versions: Jaskie DeShannon (1968, no. 55), Aretha Franklin (1969, no. 19) and The Supremes & Temptations (1969, no. 46).

Lyrics:
I pulled into Nazareth, was feeling 'bout half past dead
I just need some place where I can lay my head
Hey, mister, can you tell me, where a man might find a bed?
He just grinned and shook my hand, "No" was all he said
Take a load off Fanny, take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny, and you put the load right on me
I picked up my bags, I went looking for a place to hide
When I saw old Carmen and the Devil, walking side by side
I said, "Hey, Carmen, c'mon, let's go downtown"
She said, "I gotta go, but my friend can stick around"
Take a load off Fanny, take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny, and you put the load right on me
Go down, Miss Moses, ain't nothin' you can say
It's just old Luke, and Luke's waiting on the judgment day
Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Annalee
He said, "Do me a favor, son, won't you stay and keep Annalee company"
Take a load off Fanny, take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny, and you put the load right on me
Crazy Chester followed me, and he caught me in the fog
Said, "I will fix your rag, if you'll take Jack, my dog"
I said, "Wait a minute Chester, you know, I'm a peaceful man"
He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can"
Take a load off Fanny, take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny, and you put the load right on me
Catch the cannonball, now to take me down the line
My bag is sinking low, and I do believe it's time
To get back to Miss Fanny, you know she's the only one
Who sent me here, with her regards for everyone
Take a load off Fanny, take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny, and you put the load right on me
