How do dealerships tricks you to spend more? We show you the trick and how to respond. If you’re thinking of buying a car in 2024, try to hold off until July 30. That’s when the Federal Trade Commission’s new CARS rule goes into effect, which forces dealers to stop using shady tactics like peppering you with hidden fees, overcharging for silly extras like nitrogen in your tires, and luring you in with fake online prices. Many dealers are honest and but how many will keep acting shady, even after the rules go into effect. I’ve seen car dealerships brazenly ignore consumer protection laws that are already in place. Which is why knowing these tricks can save you money. The CARS rule will help bring some controls on overcharges that consumers pay and have no clue on how to escape them. Here are the most common dealer ripoffs to look out for, and how to respond. Not every dealer will try such shenanigans, many of them are perfectly reasonable and easy to deal with, but some dealers will and it pays to be prepared! To end on a positive note, the CARS rule is a massive win for car buyers, and many dealerships didn’t need it in the first place. But there are also dealerships out there that will try one of these sneaky tactics when you're shopping for your next car. Why Aren’t More Car Buyers Going Electric? While the EV market has grown in 2023, sales aren't rising as fast as expected, even with new model launches and price cuts and generous tax credits lowering costs for buyers. Automakers are taking notice and acting accordingly. Automakers are being forced to lower their EV prices to attract customers and compete with Tesla. But this approach is especially painful because they're already losing money on their EV investments. Why aren't people buying EVs: EVs are too expensive: Joseph McCabe, president of AutoForecast Solutions, says vehicle cost is the No. 1 barrier to EV adoption. EVs usually cost at least $10,000 more than their comparable gas counterparts, he says. Charging is expensive: If you can charge your EV at home, there are considerable fuel savings that come with going electric: You’d spend about 3x more on gas than the cost of home charging. However, the costs are about the same if you’re using a public charger, and getting fuel at a gas station is much more reliable and less time-consuming. Charging is inconvenient: Fast chargers are still hard to find in many more remote parts of the country. According to AAA, 56% of people say the lack of convenient charging is a top reason for not going electric. Depreciation: The average used EV price dropped nearly 20% in the past year, according to iSeeCars.com. Potential EV buyers have good reason to worry their cars won’t hold their value well as the technology improves. “The used market is not as strong for electric vehicles, and as a result the depreciation is higher,” says Greg Brannon, director of automotive engineering research at AAA. “That's your single biggest operating expense.” Range anxiety: Some high-end EVs promise 300+ miles of range on a single charge, but even that is not enough to cover a common drive like San Francisco to Los Angeles. You’d have to take a charging break, potentially adding 30 minutes or an hour to an already long drive. Hybrids are more popular: According to Adam Ragozzino, principal analyst, batteries and electric powertrains at Wards Intelligence, Tesla isn’t the best-selling electrified vehicle brand in the U.S. It’s Toyota, which has over 20 hybrid models and is focused on these cars in the near term, given that they offer good fuel efficiency and are capable of making long trips without requiring charging breaks. Hybrids are not only more practical and familiar to drivers than EVs, they also tend to be cheaper. Auto experts are increasingly skeptical that the U.S. will be able meet a 2032 target essentially requiring 67% of new cars to be EVs. Right now, the current EV market share in the U.S. is just 7.9%, according to Cox. Automakers are already adjusting their own goals, and it's possible that more EV model launches will be delayed in the coming months. Did you hear that a German minister threatened to have an ‘indefinite driving ban’ on weekends. This is no joke. I wish it was. The ruling coalition in Germany has been fighting over legislation that sets out binding climate targets. Could this happen in the US or other countries? It sure can, here’s how. The German transport minister threatens to ban driving on weekends if it doesn’t meet their climate goals and the ruling coalition does not pass reforms to the Climate Protection Act by July. This sounds like extortion to me. As governments make new laws and regulations leaders seem to not care about the impact to their citizens and what people want and need. Frequently these rules are enforced by non—elected officials, but even elected officials seem to be in lock step. How in the world is having a driving ban on weekends even a good idea. Liberal politician Volker Wissing of Germany wrote in a letter to the parliamentary group leaders of the coalition that “A reduction in traffic is to help meet the climate goals would only be possible through measures that are difficult to communicate to the public, such as “comprehensive and indefinite driving bans on Saturdays and Sundays,” Wissing stated. The federal coalition government, made up of the center-left Social Democrats, the Greens and the liberal Free Democrats, has been at odds for months over many issues. The planned amendment to the emissions-reduction law allows climate goals to be reviewed for compliance. If the overall target is missed two years in a row, then the German federal government is to decide in which sector and with which measures the permitted total amount of carbon dioxide emissions is to be achieved by 2030. Translated - driving bans on weekends starting in 2030! This is not a joke. As environmental organizations; including Greenpeace, the German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation BUND, and Fridays for Future, push the German government to meet their climate goals, they are now targets peoples driving freedom and want to restrict their ability to travel and their freedom. "This claim is simply wrong," Green parliamentary group leader Julia Verlinden told the German Press Agency, referring to Wissing's threat of a weekend driving ban. She added that Wissing should not aggravate people unnecessarily because there are other ways to tackle climate issues, such as a speed limit. Germany has the Autobahn which is a highway with no speed limits in certain areas of Germany. “Wissing has wasted two years blocking every climate protection measure in road traffic — now he is coming up with horror scenarios so that he won't have to do anything in the future either," said Verlinden. What about here in the USA, the U.S. Constitution ensures the “right to travel,” but during the coronavirus pandemic, state and local officials are increasingly told drivers to stay home. Essentially banning the ability to drive. As stay-at-home orders spread across the United States, a number of states had moved to restrict the arrival of nonresidents to certain states and make sure that they quarantine for 14 days. Governors in some states including Rhode Island, Florida and Texas implemented interstate travel restrictions, including stopping some drivers coming from out of state at the border to remind them of the quarantine requirement. States sue to block US rules curbing tailpipe emissions in cars, light trucks. Multiple states are not pleased with the federal government forcing new regulations on Americans. The Environmental Protection Agency is receiving more pushback for its emission rules for passenger vehicles that will go into effect in 2026. Republican attorney generals in 25 states are suing the EPA to block these rules from going into effect. The lawsuit claims the rules will threaten the economy, cause job losses, raise vehicle prices, and put the electrical grid at risk. The EPA already scaled back its original proposal after resistance from the auto industry and the UAW. The original proposal cut tailpipe emissions by 56% before 2032 compared to original request of 2026. After much push back it was then reduced to 49% in the final rule. These attorney generals say the rule is legally flawed and is forcing automakers to meet the mandate to go all electric even though consumers are pushing back and sales have dropped off dramatically. After resistance by auto workers and the auto industry, the final version of the regulations was scaled back compared to an earlier proposal in order to give automakers more flexibility in meeting the emissions reduction goals. The EPA gave automakers more freedom to meet emissions standards with gas-electric hybrids, which many environmentalists have opposed as a half-measure that delays the EV transition. The EPA denies that and says there is “absolutely no mandate” for automakers to adopt EVs. Because this is an election year, there will be more fights like this since EVs have now become politicized. These attorney generals stated that the rules amount to an attempt by the administration to transform the American passenger vehicle market improperly through strict rules that make it difficult for manufacturers to not go electric. Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman said the rules would harm the American economy, threaten jobs and raise prices while undermining the U.S. electricity grid. Coleman also said there is very little consumer interest in electric vehicles in his state. West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey called the rules "legally flawed and unrealistic, to say the least." Other states that joined the suit included: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia and Wyoming. Of course, the EPA declined to comment. The EPA has forecast that between 35% and 56% of new vehicles sold between 2030 and 2032 would be electric under the rules – a range that reflected the flexibility the agency has said automakers have to pursue different pollution-cutting technologies. States are forced into legal action against the government as more aggressive mandates put their states at risk for lost jobs, negative economic impacts to the state and its residents. An aggressive government that forces its citizens to buy something that they can’t afford by an unelected regulatory agency that makes arbitrary laws is a major issue that needs to be handled in the courts. Tesla 1st quarter of 2024 earnings show its market value has lost money in 2024. Shares are down 40%. Tesla Q1 net income drops 55% to $1.1 billion; revenue slides 9% to $21.3 billion.Tesla reported an 8.5% fall in Q1 deliveries — its first decline since the second quarter of 2020. Tesla has relentless cuts to its sticker prices which is not helping the bottom line. New Tesla Model 3 Performance was announced, and boasts more than 500 horsepower and a claimed 0-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds. A growing number of drivers are falling behind on their car payments, car repossessions are also on the rise and financial analysts fear will continue, it is a sign reflective of soaring car prices and prolonged inflation having an effect on household budgets. In recent months, the number of people behind on their car payments has been approaching new levels, and for the lowest-income consumers, the rate of loan defaults is now exceeding where it was in 2019, according to data from ratings agency Fitch. Industry analysts worry the trend is only going to continue into 2024 with economists expecting unemployment to rise, inflation to remain relatively high, and household savings set to dwindle. At the same time, a growing number of consumers are having to stretch their budgets to afford a vehicle. The average monthly payment for a new car is up 26% since 2019 to $718 a month, and nearly one in six new car buyers are spending more than $1,000 a month on vehicles. Other costs associated with owning a car have also shot up, like insurance, gas and repairs. These repossessions are occurring on people who could afford that $500 or $600 a month payment two years ago, but now everything else in their life is more expensive,” per Edmunds. “That’s where we’re starting to see the repossessions happen because it’s just everything else starting to pin you down.” Getting your car repossessed is one of the most frustrating things to deal with as a driver. Frustrated at the gas pump? You’re not the only one. There is a new update on the SPR or Strategic Oil Preserve, this s used for war or emergencies, the Biden administration cancels their purchase for Strategic Petroleum Reserve, citing high prices. The Department of Energy said it has canceled its plans to purchase millions of barrels of oil to refill the depleted U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve, as oil prices rise to a five-month high. In canceling the SPR purchase, the Energy Department said it was “keeping the taxpayer’s interest at the forefront” of its buyback plan, which is to refill the depleted reserves so long as prices remain below $79 per barrel. As of today we have only 17 days of emergency fuel. In October, it announced a buyback plan targeting oil prices of between $67 to $72 per barrel to replenish the SPR, which it later raised to $79. In its most recent refill, last month, the department exceeded those prices— spending an average of $81 per barrel to replenish the reserves. Some analysts see oil heading much higher over the summer. JP Morgan said it now expects Brent prices to rise to $90 per barrel by May and $100 per barrel by September. There is more to this story and it impacts the cost of gasoline at the pump. Let’s look deeper into the US Petroleum Reserve requirements and regulations. On page 441 of the 1050 page "Government emergency funding bill" it says that the US must sell the US petroleum reserve, and close it forever in the "NorthEast". This is very concerning in case of an emergency. The bill makes it understood that the current administration knows electric vehicles will never compete with gasoline with consumers, buyers should be able to buy whatever works for them. The bill is a sabotage to our oil and gasoline supplies. Let me prove it to you. SEC. 308. Notwithstanding sections 161 and 167 of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (42 U.S.C.6241, 6247), the Secretary of Energy shall draw down and sell one million barrels of refined petroleum product from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve during fiscal year 2024. All proceeds from such sale shall be deposited into the general fund of the Treasury during fiscal year 2024. Upon the completion of such sale, the Secretary shall carry out the closure of the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve. That is faster than the average increase of 20% during the same period over the past quarter-century. Gas prices typically rise in the spring, reaching a peak in the summer when the demand is high and gasoline formulations are more expensive, per the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Will Increased Insurance Costs Derail The EV Revolution? Here are some of the reasons to consider, why it might. If you remember that car-carrier ship that caught fire and sank in the ocean in early 2022? The Felicity Ace, operated by Mitsui OSK Lines, that took 3,000 #Porsches #Audis #bentley and #lamborghini to the bottom of the Atlantic. Mitsui OSK Lines has filed a lawsuit against Porsche seeking 30 Million Euros in damages, blaming the fire on the lithium battery in one of their electric vehicles. How does this impact the future of electric vehicle insurance. On the ship that was on fire, there was 498 electric vehicles and over 3,200 other vehicles, including 350 Mercedes Benz, were bound for Egypt when one or more of the EVs caught fire, costing at least one persons life, and injuring several others. At last report, the #dutch coast guard admitted that it has been unable to put out the fire and that the ship has taken on water and is “listing” and on a trajectory toward a capsize. The ship sank, the total loss would also threaten the Frisian island of Ameland, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to over 10,000 aquatic and terrestrial species and located near one of the world’s most important migratory-bird habitats. But all in all, this was a freak accident, a one-off. This stuff never happens… Right? There have been more cargo ships with electric cars on board catching fire lately, we have more details about the most recent cargo ship carrying nearly 3,000 cars that caught fire off the coast of the Netherlands, while traveling from Germany to Egypt. Almost one in seven cars on the blazing cargo ship are electric. Recently, two firefighters died battling flames that broke out on another roll-on, roll-off cargo ship docked at Port Newark in #newjersey . Firefighters arrived at the scene when just five to seven vehicles on the 10th floor of the ship were on fire, but the fire quickly spread to the 11th and 12th floors. Why does this matter? The cargo ship is one of several that have caught fire and burned over the past year. While this could result in a major environmental disaster if the ship sinks, firefighters and salvage crews are working to keep it afloat and extinguish the fire so it can be brought into a facility for reclamation. Insurance companies are having to write off #evs with just a few miles if they are damaged. This is leading to higher premiums because of the many EVs for which there is no way to repair or assess even slightly damaged battery packs after accidents. EVs, according to Consumer Reports, may not withstand an accident as well as traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. EV batteries are vulnerable to damage, and with any indication of a compromised battery, insurance companies will likely declare an EV crash a total loss. This puts those EVs and their batteries in junkyards to degrade over time and hopefully not leak the chemicals or catch fire. The higher costs for auto insurance only add to the already-higher costs of purchasing an EV, then procuring a personal charging station and spending more money to upgrade home wiring boxes especially for older homes. The cost to insure electric cars continues to rise for multiple reasons. Car insurance premiums have surged by 22.2% over the past year, according to March’s Consumer Price Index figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, far outpacing the current inflation rate of 3.5%. Over the same 12-month period, car repair costs increased 11.6%, with maintenance and repair costs up 8.2%. Premium costs are accelerating, with March’s 2.6% month-over-month jump in car insurance costs almost three times the size of February’s 0.9% rise, and 12-month increases exceeding 20% over the past four months–the largest increases since the 1970s.
