New cocoa-fruit chocolate boosts health, sustainability, and farmer incomes by fully utilizing the cocoa-fruit. ETH researchers have developed a type of chocolate that is more sustainable and nutritious than conventional varieties. Cocoa-​fruit chocolate uses cocoa fruit jelly as a replacement for powdered sugar, reducing the sugar content and increasing the product’s nutritional value. This new chocolate recipe also has the potential to diversify the income sources of small farmers. The primary components of chocolate are cocoa mass and cocoa butter, both of which are derived from the cocoa fruit. However, there are many other useful ingredients in the cocoa fruit that are largely underutilized in traditional chocolate recipes. In a new Innosuisse project, researchers from ETH Zurich are collaborating with sustainability-focused chocolate start-up Koa, and Swiss chocolate manufacturer Felchlin to create a new chocolate recipe that maximizes the use of the whole cocoa plant. This new recipe is healthier, more sustainable, and increases the profitability of cocoa cultivation.

The activity of an ice stream has caused the Ross Ice Shelf to suddenly displace. In Antarctica, massive glaciers are constantly shifting. Ice streams, which act like conveyor belts, are the pathways of accelerated movement that transport the majority of the ice and sediment debris from these extensive glaciers towards the ocean. One such ice stream jostles the entire Ross Ice Shelf out of place at least once daily, according to new research from Washington University in St. Louis. This finding is significant because of the scale of the Ross Ice Shelf: It is the largest ice shelf in Antarctica, about the same size as the country of France.

KAUST researchers have improved CRISPR gene editing safety by reducing harmful DNA deletions and enhancing repair mechanisms, advancing towards safer genetic treatments. A simple and robust strategy developed by KAUST scientists could help to improve the safety and accuracy of CRISPR gene editing, a tool that is already approved for clinical use for the treatment of inherited blood disorders. This approach tackles a critical issue with CRISPR technology: the act of slicing the genome at specific points and then rejoining it, which inherently risks damaging the DNA in a manner that might cause large-scale and unpredictable disruptions.

When breastfeeding mothers in a recent study used cannabis, its psychoactive component THC appeared in their breast milk. The Washington State University-led research also found that, unlike alcohol, THC did not have a consistent peak and decline time when detected in the milk. Importantly, the researchers discovered that the amount of THC they detected in milk was low – they estimated that infants received an average of 0.07 mg of THC per day. For comparison, a common low-dose edible contains 2 mg of THC. The research team stressed that it is unknown whether this amount has any impact on the infant. “Breastfeeding parents need to be aware that if they use cannabis, their infants are likely consuming cannabinoids via the milk they produce, and we do not know whether this has any effect on the developing infant,” said Courtney Meehan, a WSU biological anthropologist who led the project and is the study’s corresponding author.

However, a recent study conducted by a national team of scientists suggests 55 Cancri e may be the first rocky exoplanet confirmed to have an atmosphere.

The incidence of colorectal cancer among younger people in the U.S. has been steadily rising over the past two decades, with the most significant increases observed in the youngest age groups. A study recently presented at Digestive Disease Week (DDW) 2024 found that from 1999 to 2020, the rate of colorectal cancers increased by 500% among children aged 10 to 14, 333% among teenagers aged 15 to 19, and 185% among young adults aged 20 to 24. “Colorectal cancer is no longer considered just a disease of the elderly population,” said lead researcher Islam Mohamed, MD, an internal medicine resident physician at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. “It’s important that the public is aware of signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer.”

Researchers at the State University of Campinas conducted a study involving 49 participants and found that consuming a dietary supplement with 15 g of the substance daily for five weeks enhanced glucose metabolism post-meal. The peel of the Jaboticaba berry (Plinia jaboticaba), native to Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest, is often discarded due to its high tannin content, which gives it a puckering taste. However, a study published in the journal Nutrition Research suggests that this skin could be highly beneficial in combating obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Chemical biologists at Scripps Research have developed a preliminary “proof-of-concept” vaccine, potentially paving the way for the first effective treatment for xylazine overdose in humans. Xylazine, a sedative and pain reliever approved by the FDA for animals, causes severe side effects in humans.
