The Fascinating & Tragic Story of World’s First Black Identical Quadruplets

74 years ago, four identical Black quadruplets were born around 1am in the basement of Annie Penn Hospital on May 23, 1946 in Reidsville, NC. In the basement was the emergency room, the cafeteria and the rooms for black patients.

All of the babies were delivered within 13 minutes by Dr. Fred Klenner and a black nurse named Margaret Ware. Their parents were James “Pete” and Annie Mae Troxler Fultz. Their mother was 36 and their father was 54 and a sharecropper.
