Sunday Longplay - Castlevania 3: Sawako's Curse (NES ROM Hack)

This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm exploring a ROM hack of my favorite action platformer on the NES. Welcome to Castlevania 3: Sawako's Curse!

This hack is a simple sprite hack of Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse that keeps the original game intact but replaces all of the characters with characters from the manga/anime K-On! The Sakuragaoka High School Light Music Club's faculty advisor Sawako Yamanaka (Dracula) has fully unleashed her inner Death Devil, and it's up to the club members Tsumugi Kotobuki (Trevor), Yui Hirasawa (Sypha), Ritsu Tainaka (Grant), and Mio Akiyama (Alucard) to stop her rampage!

I became curious about the anime after playing this ROM hack, so I binged it over the past few weeks when I had downtime from work. It's a neat little comedic slice of life anime about a group of high school girls who start a rock band together. I smiled, I laughed, and the ending actually made me cry a bit. Pretty good music too, especially the ending theme songs and the bits and pieces of Death Devil (Sawako's previous band) music we hear in a few episodes (Season 2 episode 10 is my favorite!).

Given the characters' personalities, I can see how they represent the Castlevania characters that they do in this hack. With all the memes from the show about how strong Mugi is, it only makes sense to make her the honorary Belmont of the group. With how hyper Ritsu is, making her the faster-moving, higher-jumping, wall-climbing Grant suits her well. Yui has some magical skills of her own, most notably her perfect pitch, so Sypha works for her (not to mention Yui's voice actress Stephanie Sheh also voices Sypha's distant descendant Charlotte Aulin in Castlevania Portrait of Ruin). And Mio as Alucard could be seen as her overcoming her numerous fears by becoming them. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it...
