• Is 46:1-4 Cyrus would carry out God's judgment against Babylon. Bel was the chief deity of the Babylonians; Nebo was the god of science and learning. These gods, however, needed animals and people to carry them around and could not even save themselves from being taken into captivity. They had no power at all. In contrast, our God created us and cares for us. His love is so enduring that he will care for us throughout our lifetime and even through death.

• Is. 46:5 The design of this and the following verses is to show the folly of idolatry, and the vanity of trusting in idols. This is a subject that the prophet often dwells on. The argument here is derived from the fact that the idols of Babylon were unable to defend the city, and were themselves carried away in triumph. If so, how vain was it to rely on them! how foolish to suppose that the living and true God could resemble such weak and defenseless blocks!

• Is. 46:6-7 They lavish gold out of their purses and spare no expense for their idol. Their extravagance shames the miserly nature of those who profess their worship of God with what cost them nothing. Idolatry is a costly service. The idolaters carry the idol upon their shoulders in procession, and exposes it to the view and worship of the people. The workman or his men lift it up, for it cannot lift up itself, and take it upon their shoulders, and carry it home to the proprietor. This was the case with Baal's priests and worshippers , who cried to him, but no voice was heard, nor answer returned, for though they have ears, they hear not, and mouths, yet they speak not. The idol cannot save the idolatrous worshipper out of his distress, and this is frustration of those who follow idols (gods).

Personal Supplication
Father in the name of Jesus, I am grateful that my worship of You is not in vain. Grant me grace for deeper worship and devotion.

4 Troubles multiply for those who chase after other gods. I will not take part in their sacrifices of blood or even speak the names of their gods.
5 Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine.

Only with thine eyes shall I behold and see the wicked rewarded.

Because I have made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, my habitation;
There shall no evil befall me neither shall any plague come nigh my dwelling.
For God shall give his angels charge over me, to keep me in all my ways.
They shall bear me up in their hands, lest I dash my foot against a stone.
I shall tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt I trample under feet.
Because I have set my love upon God, therefore will He deliver me: He will set me on high, because I have known His name.
I shall call upon Him, and He will answer me: He will be with me in trouble; He will deliver me, and honour me.

With long life will God satisfy me, and shew me His salvation.
So shall it be for me and my household today and forever, Amen and Amen!
