Who'll Stop the Rain (Creedence Clearwater Revival, 1970). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2022-03-09. "Keeping the Oldies Alive"

John Fogerty's song "Who'll Stop the Rain" was a double a-sided single with "Traveling Band," which was released in 1970 and both songs rose to the #2 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (songmeaningsandfacts.com, 2022; Whitburn, 2013). According to songmeaningsandfacts.com, the song references three distinct themes: people through the ages trying to fix issues in the world; the Cold War and the Vietnam war; the Woodstock concert. "as a commentary about the overall ineffectiveness of being able to 'stop the rain'. It was argued that 'The rain' . . . is a general symbol of persistent problems human beings face collectively" (songmeaningsandfacts.com, 2022). However, when interviewed by Rolling Stone magazine, Fogerty stated that "I was talking about Washington, when I wrote the song" (iloveclassicrock.com, 2022). As an aside, amazingly, with all the hit songs Creedence recorded, none ever reached the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; five releases stalled at the #2 position on the chart and two of these five were double a-sided releases; so technically they had seven #2 hits (Whitburn, 2013).

Lyrics:

As long as I remember
The rain's been comin' down
Clouds of mystery pourin'
Confusion on the ground

Good men through the ages
Tryin' to find the sun
And I wonder, still I wonder
Who'll stop the rain

I went down Virginia
Seekin' shelter from the storm
Caught up in the fable
I watched the tower grow

Five year plans and new deals
Wrapped in golden chains
And I wonder, still I wonder
Who'll stop the rain?

Heard the singers playin'
How we cheered for more
The crowd then rushed together
Tryin' to keep warm

Still the rain kept pourin'
Fallin' on my ears
And I wonder, still I wonder
Who'll stop the rain?
