Mounted and recessed sensors are the most popular types of devices used for home security systems. But they have some limitations. In order to add an extra layer of safety, you’ll want to add a glass break detector to your existing system. Our video guide shows you how to properly install and use the Lyric SIXGB glass breakage detector.

Most alarm sensors detect movement of doors and windows. The sensor is placed on the frame while a magnet is positioned on the actual door or window. When the door or window opens, the connection between the sensor and magnet is broken, and the system reacts with an appropriate notification or alarm.

The sensor activates when the connection is broken. Unfortunately, opening a door or window isn’t the only way an intruder can enter your home or business. They can also break the glass and enter through the broken window. Patio doors, storefront windows, bay windows and other large sections of glass pose an increased risk for break-ins.

The Lyric SIXGB detects the unique audio frequency of glass breaking. This is an encrypted, bi-directional sensor which needs to be within 300 to 400 feet of the Lyric control panel. The wireless sensor automatically sends and receives data to the main system to ensure a working connection at all times.

If glass breaks, the sensor will detect the noise. The range of detection is 25 feet, although that can vary based on the shape and acoustics of the room. If false alarms become an issue, the detection range can easily be reduced.

Because the sensors are sound sensitive, they can cover a large area. In the video, we install a sensor above a doorway which is across the room from a set of sliding glass doors. While the doors are the priority in the room, the sensor placement also covers some of the smaller windows in the room, too.

When determining placement, the first step is to identify any large pieces of glass a person could potentially enter through. Place the sensor to cover those types of entry points but fine-tune placement to also cover as many smaller windows as possible.

Generally, sensors should be placed high on the wall. This provides a large, unobstructed coverage area. As you can see in the video, the sensor is similar in size to a standard smoke detector.

This video shows you how to install the physical sensor to your wall. We cover the process of connecting the sensor to the alarm system in a separate video.

In the installation video, we place the sensor in the middle of the doorway horizontally as well as evenly between the ceiling and top of the doorframe. No matter where you’re placing your sensor, a level and measuring tape will help with even placement.

Included with the SIXGB are three screws, three wall anchors and a small anti-tampering screw. To install the sensor, you’ll need a drill with a 3/16ths drill bit.

Our complete guide shows you how to mount the back plate and attach the sensor. Once installed, the audio microphone will pick up the sound of glass breaking, providing an additional layer of security for your Lyric alarm system.
