Using a Phone Line with an Interlogix Simon XTi & XTi-5 Alarm System

In this video, Joe shows users how to set up a phone line with the Interlogix Simon XTi and XTi-5 Systems. There is a phone jack input found in both of these panels for running a phone line. The user will have to use an RJ31X module with the phone line connection. This comes included with the panel.

The phone line coming from the building will go to the RJ31X module, which will then connect with the Interlogix Simon XTi or XTi-5. A second phone line connection can then go from the panel, to the RJ31X and finally to any phones in the building. This is an important module because, in the event of an emergency, the system will be able to temporarily cut the phone line to the telephone if it is currently being used. This will allow the Simon XTi or XTi-5 to successfully send out a signal to the central monitoring station.

Although a Simon XTi or XTi-5 could be used without an RJ31X module, using the phone while the system is attempting to communicate could disrupt the signal and prevent the central monitoring station from successfully receiving the message. This can be very troubling if this were to occur during an actual emergency. For that reason, using an RJ31X module is very strongly recommended.

Inside the Simon XTi and XTi-5 Systems is a dialer that is used to actually dial the number of a central monitoring station. Once the central station has receiver an alert in this manner, it will know that something is wrong at the location. An operator can then send emergency dispatch to the end user's location. This is true whether or not the end user is currently at the location. This can be very important for receiving emergency help if a break-in or a fire occurs while the user is out.

Please note that Alarm Grid strongly discourages the use of phone lines for alarm monitoring. Phone lines provide relatively slow and inefficient communication, and the signals sometimes fail to reach their destination. Instead, we advise users to use cellular communication with their systems. Both the Simon XTi and XTi-5 can have a cellular communicator added for this purpose. Setting up a cellular communicator will also allow these systems to connect with the Alarm.com interactive service.

Note: Joe refers to these panels as the Simon XT and Simon XTi-5, but he's actually working with the Simon XTi and XTi-5.
