Discussion of Batteries in Sensors

In this video, Jorge talks about the different batteries that are used inside of wireless sensors. Batteries are important for wireless sensors because they are what powers these devices so that they can communicate successfully with the security panel. Batteries need to be replaced every few years.

The type of battery that a sensor will use typically depends the size of the sensor itself and the amount of power it needs to function. There are many different types of batteries that are used with alarm systems. However, the most common are typically CR123A camera batteries and coin batteries. The coin batteries, such as the CR2025 and the CR2032, are typically used with smaller sensors where there is not a lot of space available for them inside the device. But when a sensor is larger, it will have more space to accommodate a cylindrical battery, like a CR123A. Other types of batteries that are commonly used inside of sensors include the AA and AAA sizes. These sizes are both extremely popular, and they are commonly available in most stores.

Wireless sensors do not use AC power for operation. Instead, they rely on battery power at all times. This is what allows these sensors to work wirelessly, without having any power cables run from them to the wall outlet. Batteries allow these sensors to work very consistently and maintain constant communication with the alarm system. But over time, the battery inside the sensor will begin to lose its charge. Once the voltage for the battery drops below a certain threshold, the system will display a trouble condition, indicating that the sensor has a low battery. The user should then replace the battery at their earliest convenience. If the battery is not replaced soon enough, the sensor will shut down completely.

Replacing a battery for an alarm sensor is generally very simple. A user just has to take off the back cover, remove the old battery and insert the new one. When replacing the battery, the user should make sure to follow proper polarity with the positive (+) and negative (-) ends both facing the correct direction. If the battery is inserted in backwards, then the sensor will not work.
